Getting a tiny bit tired of the endlessly repeating retrospectives on NASA TV.  I want more live space video coverage while they're awake up there.

Won't lie, Once you've seen them 5 times they do get a tad dull.

EDIT: Personally they should devote all the time to STS-135 and play them during crew sleep if they must, But really after the mission.

My bad -- they (some Shuttle and Station crew / on the flight deck) just finished it and the Wallops pass is still several minutes away.  Only caught the tail end of it, but it was a tribute to the workforce...was nice, hope it gets broadcast at some point.

May be hard to tell sometimes during these transfer days given much less intervention is necessary.  There are calls on the two 'alternate' comm channels (A/G 2, S/G 2) from time to time.

Might be some calls about the upcoming WHC work that Rob Navias just outlined...

Lots of "final" questions from the third station.

Sandy will be sad to leave Atlantis at the end.

Rex enjoyed the EVA from the inside.

Rex doing some good pimping of the ISS' capabilities. Wants to be involved with the new vehicles.

That was a good set of questions.

Yes, especially since the RSS and most of the FSS on B is gone. STS-116 was the last launch off LC-39B (besides Ares 1-X)

Chris Edelen

Another good day in space
Busy day of cargo transfer
50% complete on MPLM cargo transfer
Running ahead of schedule
Atlantis mid deck cargo is 50% complete
It’s a controlled chaos
Great assistance from the Russians today and JAXA
Mike went into PMA 3 today, and retrieved an old piece of hardware, a resistive exercise device (early weight lifting device)
It’s being moved in the MPLM for return, this will free up a lot of storage space, this was added due to the extra day being added
Ron spent several hours work on the station toilet, replaced several components that were giving noises and vibrations
The toilet is now working fine; the shuttle crew can use it if they need to
No problems with the space suits
Resumed the UPA today, its working well
Moved over some UPA filter assemblies
Got a new spare wireless EVA transceiver assembly
Transferred a distillation assembly for the UPA
Lots of food and clothes

Tomorrow
US and Russian crew get half a day of
Transfer in the morning, Russians replacing a gyro scope on there treadmill

Questions

Q: Talk about going from an EVA to cargo transfer?

A: It’s all in the life of an astronaut.

Q: How much will you have to enforce the time off tomorrow?

A: They’ve been working so hard too take advantage of some downtime. Don’t expect any problem getting them to take some time off.

Q: What work did you do on the UPA?

A: It was all ground commanded activity. 10 days ago, we had a leak in part of the toilet (pump sep motor) in the process of changing the part some air got into the UPA. So we’ve been carefully using the UPA to avoid over stressing it. There was a smell reported that we believe is associated with the air coming out. No reports of a smell today.

Q: Are you having a virtual dinner with the crew tomorrow?

A: I hope we get some downlink

Q: Thoughts on what the non profit organisation selected today to run the lab will mean?

A: We used to fly a payload specialist to operate payloads. Not aware of any plans to do this on ISS but it could be done. We’re moving from a resupply phase to a utilisation phase where we do lots of science. This announcement heralds the beginning of that phase.

Q: Talk about the centre disk cover install in PMA3? (Philip!)

A: Want to make sure the items inside don’t shift into the hatch mechanism

Q: What do you mean by being 50% complete with cargo transfer?

A: Unloading the MPLM takes about 1/3 of the hours. Reloading takes 2/3 hours. In terms of hours we are 50% complete.

Q: Do you feel like your on target to accomplish what you want within the time you have?

A: If we didn’t have the extra day we wouldn’t be ahead of schedule and couldn’t have had Ron work on the toilet, that took 4 hours.

Q: Any problems finding place to store the cargo brought up?

A: Yes it’s been a huge challenge. Discovery brought up another MPLM that’s a permanent storage basement. Even with this all of its racks storage space will be full and 14/16 will have cargo on the front. Many other places on station have more cargo stored on it that expected. One reason were bulking up is due the shuttle retirement and being dependent on commercial companies.

Q: How long will these supplies keep you going?

A: If we had just this flight we couldn’t make it through 2012. With the progresses and Soyuz’s we can get through 2012. HTV and ATV give us additional margin.

Q: How big was the exercise machine Mike moved?

A: Approx 10 cubic feet. 10 small suitcases.

Q: Anything done differently to try and get rid of the smell from the UPA?

A: We just let it sit for a day, engineers looking at data don’t see any abnormal indications. Don’t know if theres any gas still in the system, so the smell may come back.

So they'll be heading into pre-sleep soon. Half a day off duty tomorrow (two slower days by way of what we can cover "transfer item moving, transfer item moved") which is why we're staying on this single thread for both days.

Two STS-135 articles in work, but first we're going with Discovery's move to the VAB and what they have planned for the OPFs. Going to get that done now.

Nice music

And PAO Josh just noted that it's good because it's Bear "BSG" McCreary's work! :o How epic is that!
We can't hear it in the briefing room. ;D

I may have missed it, so I asked Mr. Edelen about it afterwards, but with the +1 day, they are looking to get the MPLM about 90% full for return.

As I recall the interview...

The DAT team decided to wear something distinctive when they reported the orbiter fit to reenter to the MMT.

It started out with them all wearing orange shirts and for the last flight they went for a Hawaiian theme!

HAHA!!

Top 10 reasons O3 FDO was late today:

10.  Coasting, what’s the hurry.
9.  Too many DAMs on the way to work today
8.   He’s traumatized by flight asking what the NOTAMs mean
7.  Orbit 3 hours are rough, he wishes he was on Orbit 1
6.  His home OIGN- clock was set incorrectly
5.   He was pulled over on the way in and the officer asked “Do you know how fast you
were going?” FDO responded “In which reference frame?”
4.  Pink shirt was still in the dryer
3.  Handover is non-critical and can be slipped in one rev increments
2.   The next burn isn’t until FD12, what is he even here for?
1.  Over-burned leaving a stoplight and ran out of gas

Great note on TriDAR on page 3:

"The TriDAR team would like to thank you for your excellent troubleshooting on FD03 and is happy to report that they have received great data. More than 70,000 data and telemetry files have been downlinked from the PGSC and the support team is busy pouring over the data. Early analysis indicates that the system has outperformed the docking results received from STS-128 and STS-131."

They probably have even less say over how the spacecraft cameras are pointed.  Guessing there are times they might wish to be as powerful as we imagine.

Sounds like no resolution on TVIS (the Russian treadmill).

Also PAO notes they might keep the old gyroscope on orbit (as it was planned to come down on shuttle), as they are seeing the same signature.

I think they've all had that 'locker room' view of each other before.  As noted, it's been many years since something like this, but it used to be common.

Yes this is an unfortunate truth for us this mission.  I'm glad I was able to see STS-133 and 134's orbiters and ISS as they were both docked (1 dot)and undocked(2 dots chasing each other).  It was a sight I'll never forget.

I´ll need suggestions within an hour, so be quick ;)

A bit off topic, but Doug Wheelock has announced on Twitter that he is going to be deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom:

Quote
I salute you, my friends! Duty calls and I must fade off the 'Twitter grid' for a bit. I'll be flying again, in support of 'Operation Enduring Freedom' and plan to return home sometime in the Fall. If the opportunity arises, I'll try to 'tweet' you from 'the zone'. I won't be able to share the details for now...but, be sure that you'll be on my mind, and the memories of our time together safely stored in my heart.

Take care of each other, be kind and courageous, stand up when life's storms come, and reach out your hand to help others that have fallen.

Chris Edelen

Pleased to report another good day of operations
Crew made good progress transferring cargo
Atlantis crew are 70% with MPLM and Middeck transfer 10,000lbs of cargo being brought up on Atlantis
Most cargo is now on the right side of the hatches
Main task is now to get the return cargo safely stowed
Bringing back some old quick don masks – emergency mask that provides oxygen
And a Vos Duke bed from the Russian CDRA- it’s large so coming back in the MPLM
Cargo transferred to station
Combustion integration rack – fuel bottles to study how fire behaves in 0g
A new treadmill track
A hydrogen dome sensor for the OGS – used as part of the system which takes water and splits it into hydrogen and oxygen
We have a new device that takes the hydrogen form the OGS combines it with CO2 from the CDRA and puts out water
This produces methane which we vent overboard but could be used for rocket fuel in the future

ISS crew did some science and cleaning
Ron cleaned some ducting
Mike performed a space suite water loop scrub
Mike and Ron together organised node 3 end cone to create a more organised space, this is where ARES is located
Russian crew spent several hours trouble shooting there treadmill, we believed a gyro had failed so we brought one up on STS 135. Installing it didn’t fix the problem, the gyro is receiving power but not spinning up so the problem may be in the controller.

Tomorrow the crew is doing more cargo transfer and theres a joint news conference
And doing some space suit resizing work

Questions

Q: More details on Sebatier?

A: Sebatier is part of the regenerative life support system. It takes hydrogen from the OGS and combines it with the waste C02 from the CDRA to produce water and methane.

Q: Talk about the split between science and stowing tasks going forward?

A: When the mission was first planned there was no time for science. The extra day and crew efficiency allowed us to add some science operations. Looking at additional science towards the end of the mission.

Q: On the TVIS gyro was the plan to bring the suspected bad one home? Are you still doing so? (Philip!)

A: Plan is still TBD. It’s being discussed by the engineers and FC With the new gyro giving the same signature it seems the gyroscope wasn’t faulty. If it isn’t faulty why return it? Keeping it on station does take up space though. Want to delay the decision as late as possible

Q: How big is the gyro could the dragon capsule bring it down? (Philip)

A: It will easily fit through the CBM, don’t know mass. (Shows how big it is with his hands, see picture)

Q: How important is it to stow things in the MPLM as per the plan?

A: We are aiming for a 90% full MPLM by volume. Everything will have to be stowed in its proper place to ensure the COG is correct. Have plenty of flexibility to adapt in real time.

Q: Did mission control take part in the shared meal?

A: That didn’t happen today the crew did go the shuttle for a joint meal (not with MC) this evening.

Q: What benefits does the Copula bring?

A: The prime robotics workstation is in the Copula, the windows provide a great view to enhance there situational awareness. Its useful for earth photography, we send the crew a message every day with a few features on the ground we want them to look at and take pictures for scientists.

Q: Any tasks that still need to be performed before undocking?

A: Need 120 hours to load MPLM to 80% volume can now get it to 90% volume in that time. Every night Sandy gives us an update on what was transferred and the ground team calculates how many hours are remaining.

Q: Could you extend the mission ?

A: We could stay indefinitely as the shuttle isn’t using propellant whilst docked, the shuttles CMG is maintaining attitude. The limiting consumable is cryogenic oxygen and hydrogen. We committed our cryo margin to add the extra day so will undock on Tuesday to ensure we have enough cyro to go to EOM +2

Q: Will you give Space X permission to dock?

A: It’s on the books, look forward to having them dock in December

Q: Combining COTS 2/3?

A:  Plan is to combine them. Working towards early December but it may slip.

Q: When did NASA formally approve the Space X docking?

A: Don’t have the exact date would have to check it was formally approved

Q: Are you ahead of schedule on cargo transfer?

A: 12 hours ahead

Q: Whats wrong with the TVIS?

A: The gyro has to spin quickly to provide gyroscopic stability. It stabilises the treadmill when you hitting it whilst running. Were seeing the gryo receive power but not spin up. So we’ve looked at if it’s a failure of the gyro or cable. Replaced both, nothing changed. So it could be the vibration isolation controller. Swapping that out in the future.

transfer 70% complete, which is twelve hours ahead of what was on the timeline

At the start of today, we were 50% complete. Bearing in mind that today was only a half transfer day (due to off duty time), that equates to a rate of 20% per half day, or 40% per full day. So, even if tomorrow is 10% less efficient than today, we could be done with transfer by this time tomorrow! :)

There are other things to consider, however, such as crew fatigue, size and difficulty of stowing items, lost items, etc.

Very true Chris!  The South Atlantic War is a hobby of mine, and Hermes and Invincible are two of my favorite ships of that era.  But each of those ships were only 26,000 to 20,000 tons respectively.  The US Tarawa and Wasp classes weigh in at 40,000 tons each (the same size as a WW II class CV).  The Nimitz, nearly 100,000 tons!!!!  My carrier was in the middle at 85,000.

Yeah, the last items are going to take a while as the PMM is stuffed full, such that they can barely fit a person in there.  Already talking about needing time during the stage once Atlantis leaves to re-arrange everything...

The switch tease was with GPC 3, but that was a switch issue and that GPC was reloaded and is good.

I think that call gives the antenna switching back to the GPCs.

Polled the room and the crew can go back to sleep...asking about wake up...about 5 hours and 40 minutes from scheduled wake up.

Getting an extra 30 minutes.

Brandi with the updated crew wake up time...was 11:29 pm Central, now 11:59 pm.

Official crew sleep time was 3:29 pm Central, so the GPC failure with resultant master alarm occurred about 90 minutes into their sleep period.

The closing scene in the flight day highlights is video showing Typhoon Ma-on, which is currently headed toward Japan.

[edit to add]
Ma-on is now a major typhoon; category 3. Landfall is forecasted to be while Ma-on is weakening, but still a major typhoon.

I wish someone could ask the GC guys what that is on the counter above their consoles. It looks like a triangular shaped plaque mounted on a wood base, near the end of the counter by the exit door.

Larger gaps in comms during sleep. Was a LOS of 25 mins expected. However, teams in ops support got WSSH to help out so they could look at the data.

I don't think that is what it is... I need to check the view when it is next on. After I typed that I noted that he was from the Shuttle side, the item I am speaking of is in the ISS control room I believe. I am using iPad so I can't do a screen grab, so I will try to point it out next time it is visible.
thanks.

Any outstanding issues due to the GPC4 failure? Will the 30 minute late wake up call, have an impact to the working hours (thus transfers) of the crew? Also when will GPC4 bring back to normal operation?

Indeed she does!!!  She's the last of the Tarawa class assault ships.  Pete, to put things in perspective, I had more Harriers on the flight deck of my fifth ship, Bataan during my 2003 deployment to Iraq than Admiral Sandy Woodward had in his entire South Atlantic Task Force in 1982.  Our sister ship Bonhomme Richard had just as many during the same deployment.
You had ~35 Harriers on the *flight deck* of an LHD?
