Very cool! Thanks guys.

I was wondering, would someone be so kind as to post a pic from 0A and annotate where the sound suppression system nozzles are located? Thanks in advance!

Can you even static fire a second stage and/or solid fuel stage?

Static fire a solid stage?  Of course you can -- once!  And then you replace it.  (or send it back to the factory, if it's intended to be refurbished)

If you static fire a second stage on top of the first stage, you get this ...

... not a good thing.  :o

I always thought the sound suppression water dumped more in the flame trench. Not on top of the pad. Interesting. I never heard it called rainbird :)

That was mean!

I thought that was the brand name of SOMETHING, but I couldn't place it.

The water sound suppression system that dumps the water at the exit of the flame duct is called the "car wash", at least colloquially. If you look at Falcon 9 launches, you'll see they rain water straight to the nozzle output. It starts a second or so before ignition (which is T-3, I believe).

In this case, the ignition of the Antares' first stage is at T0. So the rainbirds activate at T-1 second.

There are 4 large nozzles at each corner of the pad and dozens of smaller nozzles lining the point right below where the rocket is mounted. They're all gravity fed by the water tower next to the pad.

Looks like 26 or 27 second firing.  Throttled down to 75% then to 55%.

Was the hot fire 100 percent successful?

There's some information on L2 about certain test results.  Orbital's press release stated that "Initial indications are that the test was fully successful".

According to another thread in this section, Jeff Foust of Space News recently reported that Orbital ATK is planning for a late-August launch, so it seems that the hot fire test has led to preparation for a launch.

In the CRS-9 post-launch briefing there was a call-in question from Bill Harwood (CBS):
Quote
Can you give us a little update on the, uh, Cygnus plans for August 22nd, how realistic is that date.  Have you guys finished your analysis of uh, you know the engine issue that came up after their hot fire, um.  Anything you can add on on their schedule, thanks.

The answer is that August 22nd is "a good date right now" with some discussion of the launch trajectory analysis but nothing confirming or denying any issue from the hot fire.

Can be seen at around 12:30 into this video: .

Not sure what "engine issue" he's referring to as that was the first I've heard of it (I don't have L2).
