Stargate - Amazon Prime

Yep it’s back. As the video says it’s not a reboot but a continuation.

Announcement video.

This was not something on my radar, and after watching the video above I have high hopes for what they could do, especially since it is a "continuation" and NOT a reboot - so what happened in the past will be related to what they do in the future.

OK, the last episode of Stargate Universe aired May 9, 2011, so 14 years since that timeline. In the real world that would mean everyone has been going on with their lives, both within and outside of The Stargate Program. Probably unlikely we'll see the kids of the major players being major characters in the new show, but having prior characters return in some way would provide a LOT of buzz for the new show.

I'm sure we all have our own favorites that we'd like to see come back at least for cameo appearances - who would be your favorites?
If we don't continuously lower the cost to access space, how are we ever going to afford to expand humanity out into space?

I dunno. A part of me would very much like to see a return of stargate, but a 6 minute long video telling me how great the show is going to be just doesn't give me much confidence. IMO, reboots are lazier than continuations, so that bit is a definite positive for me.

Ok, enough whining. What would I like to see? The main difficulty I see is that the franchise began with humans being the scrappy underdogs barely keeping their heads afloat, and essentially ended with humans now being among the most powerful entities in the galaxy (thanks, Thor; sorry about your house). So how do we keep Stargate, well, Stargate?

Where I think the spirit of the original show can still reside is actually back on Destiny. Start there, and in real time. Say the put-crew-in-stasis trick mostly failed, and use the 14 year elapsed time as an excuse to purge the extraneous cast back down to a core cast + a couple supporting characters. Then run the show similar to how Stargate Atlantis was run. Destiny resumes the mission of figuring out where they are, where they're going, how to get home, etc. Complete freedom for the team to worldbuild without stomping on established canon. Simultaneously, storylines back on Earth/elsewhere could be more socio-galactical-political without risking the overall tone of the show, while also allowing for cameos from just about anyone and everyone from the previous casts when desired/convenient.

YMMV. I think there's a lot of room to work; just hope the new team will pull it off. I'll be giving it a watch regardless.

I've always been annoyed that they cancelled Stargate Atlantis with so much left undone. They went from SG1 to Atlantis so well, and even Universe was done pretty good.

I imagine that they could ignore both Atlantis and Universe and go off in a new direction, will have to wait and see. Hmm reading the article, I expect them to go in a different direction.

I saw the original move back in the 1990's.  Saw all of the SG-1 series. Saw all of the Atlantis series.  Then Stargate Universe seem to be too dark and slow paced.  Quit watching it.  Hopefully the new series is good.

Also watched all of the original Startrek, Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager and the movies.  One of the new series I quit watching.  I have been watching Strange New Worlds.  Saw the new movies which were good, but I wish they would get back on the original timeline.

So some kind of Stargate reboot/continuation has been in discussion for many years now. If you dig around on the internet, you can find mentions of it for probably at least five years. It's one of those lower tier franchises that studios own that they try to revive. That doesn't mean they'll be successful at reviving it, or keeping it alive. There are quite a few of these things that were brought back only to fold after a season or two. For example, Knight Rider and Lost in Space.

My prediction is that they will give this at least two seasons. That seems to be rather standard, because the startup costs of building sets, making costumes, creating an effects pipeline, are high, and they always try to amortize that over two seasons unless they are absolutely bleeding money.

I was never a Stargate fan, although I did binge about five seasons of SG-1 on DVD. The chemistry among the characters is what made it fun. The stories were meh. Hopefully they can recapture the chemistry.

Would people say that Stargate is the same level of franchise as Trek is in the US? Over here in the UK I hate to say it but I think Stargate is far less known amongst the public than Trek is. TBH  name recognition wise it’s not even in the same ballpark. That said this isn’t unknown after all I suspect Doctor Who has way more name recognition in the UK than even Trek, but in the US is probably still quite a niche interest.

Key messages in the video for me:
1) We may see some old faces
2) You do NOT need to have seen any Stargate series/movie before seeing this new series and still be able to enjoy/engage.

This suggests a completely new main cast with cameos, and a start from scratch journey for the new cast (e.g. as with Ely).

Aside: James Spader is free now after Blacklist has finished...  ;)

I imagine as regards returning cast members it may not be all that different to the new Buffy show which is also a continuation not a reboot.

Not by a long shot. Count the number of episodes, movies, and years. And no wider cultural impact.

More reboot news! Maybe we can get a Stargate/Baywatch crossover episode?

I'll tune in, but given the state of Hollywood these days I'm not getting my hopes up.

SG-1/DS9/B5 are the highest point of SF TV, it's all downhill from there and I don't think the trend will reverse any time soon.

But I find I'm ok with that, 20 years ago I'd be jumping with joy for news like this, nowadays it's just "meh". Maybe it's just me getting old, but I think it's also because we're already living in a SF world. I mean we have humanoid robots, AI that can talk to us naturally, brain implants, and of course huge spaceships being built to colonize another planet. Witnessing the trial and tribulation of people working their ass off to push the tech forward for humanity is a much better show than anything Hollywood can think up.

I think you missed "The Expanse" out of that list

Now bring back Babylon 5

Will Teal’c be back?

JMS tried to bring back B5 and failed. That's understandable, because B5 was never that big to begin with and doesn't have the name recognition needed. Stargate had a movie, and then several shows, hundreds of episodes. I don't think it ever rose to the top tier of science fiction popularity, but it certainly got to the top of the middle tier.

It will be interesting what they decide to do with the tone of the new show. The original had a certain amount of whimsy to it. And what really carried it was the actors and characters. There was a lot of chemistry on screen and you liked the characters. By the time of Stargate: Universe, they got a lot darker. People died as the series went along. And the show got canceled. I watched only a bit of it, but I respected what they were trying to do with it.

So will the new show try to be a bit more light-hearted and comical, or will it go dark?

The new show is to be filmed in the UK this year. Though it says London in this article I imagine it will actually film at Bray Studios which Amazon MGM own over here. Otherwise in former days known as the home of Hammer productions. Production will last two years before it is shown.
