SpaceX and Tom Cruise is a match made in space
By Joey Klender  Posted on May 4, 2020

SpaceX could become the first private company to send world-renowned actor Tom Cruise into space for the next out-of-this-world movie. Literally.

According to a report from Deadline Hollywood, Tom Cruis could be partnering with SpaceX and NASA to launch the first-ever feature film to be produced outside of planet Earth.

Reports from the site indicate that the film’s development is in very early stages, and plans for the film are preliminary.

Confirmed by NASA:

NASA is excited to work with
@TomCruise
 on a film aboard the
@Space_Station
! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make
@NASA

NASA declined to comment on whether SpaceX is involved in Tom Cruise's film plans, although it would make sense for @elonmusk's space company given deals it's signed already to fly non-professional astronauts to the space station.

On a side note I wonder what James Cameron thinks when he reads this.

Regarding crew assignments I wonder what that means. I assume you need to fly Cruise, maybe another actor (the female lead for instance) and a barebone technical team. How many people ?

Well, this might be interesting for public relations purposes.

Good that it is not Matt Damon. That would have inevitably required a rescue mission.  ;D

Good question!

But I just puked in my mouth a little.

Thank goodness we can get 7 on these CC vehicles, that's enough for Cruise and 6 assistants.  CCP will now be Cruise's Cruiser Program.  Part of Cruise' TOPGUN-1 contract was flights in an F-14.  He was in an F-14 before astronaut Kelly was, though Kelly was a test pilot.

I do hope they launch at least another actor. Having Tom Cruise delivering monologues in the ISS would not be very interesting. As I said in the previous post either Cruise and the female lead (you can start speculating) or Cruise and the main villain (ditto) would make sense.

It's not clear how they'll handle the running scene.  A treadmill perhaps?

Couldn't they find someone younger and with a bit less botox? - A "fresh face", literally...

They can do that for the second movie filmed in space.  He is a known box office draw.  I'm just glad anyone is doing it.

Tom Cruise seems to have put in his share of flight hours in the cockpit for the upcoming "Top Gun: Maverick", his 2020 sequel to the original  1986 hit movie "Top Gun":

So it's perhaps with this in his recent repertoire that he's looking to aim a little higher and go beyond the stratosphere, as he seems to be in shape for it.

But how much of the movie will be shot in space - or will it be kept to small snippets of footage here and there, which show up interspersed with copious CGI?
Also, will they innovatively advance the art of filming in space?

They haven't yet said what their movie will be about, and hopefully they'll make good use of the ISS as a setting to provide some spectacular footage that makes their effort worthwhile.

In the movie Apollo 13, actors Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton did shoot footage onboard NASA's KC-135 "Vomit Comet" to give authenticity to their zero-G scenes:

I absolutely love Apollo 13. It was the first time since reading about that whole endeavour that it somehow felt more real. I couldn't put my finger on it until I found out how they actuallyl filmed in zero-g. That's why I assumed Starship before NASA joined in, it would have enough room to be used as a stage for all kinds of things. With ISS, the setting is very much dictated by the environment. Not that that's a bad thing, of course.
Which booster has the most soot? SpaceX booster launch history! (discussion)

How about a break from Scientology... in Space.  C'mon Cruise, you can do it.

In France they were interviewing yesterday on the radio the boss of Novespace (J-F Clervoy). Tom Cruise actually did some filming on board the A300 Zero-G in Bordeaux for the movie "The Mummy" in July 2016. Clervoy noted that he fared well in zero-g. Sorry for the prospect of space sickness.

Here is a link to the "making of" of this sequence of Tom Cruise in Zero G

Considering the action stuff he does for the Mission Impossible films I am not surprised he’s signed up for this.
