Missed this from a few days ago. Look who's back. Again.

So will this end up effecting USAF/DOD launch contracts in a politically motivated/biased manner or will this just ruin a bunch of other things instead?

Edit/Lar: Tried softening the tone a bit.. might not work. If this devolves into bashing it won't last long.

You know, his idea "seemed" like a good one.  The problem was the SSME was not re-startable for the second stage.  So they went with the J2X, then they had to have a 5 seg solid etc, etc. 

To me the less costly way would have been to keep the 4 seg solids, SSME core (start with 3 then add two more with a big second stage), then develop the RL-60 engine for the second stage and use 5 of them.  Would have cost a lot less to develop everything, and we should be flying now.  Only one new engine development.  Use existing solids.  Use existing SSME's until they could be made cheaper.  5 seg solids cost a lot to develop.  Water over the dam.
