Quote from ISS On-Orbit Status 07/02/08:

"EVA-20 Timeline Preview (preliminary):   The Orlan EVA-20 by Volkov (EV1) & Kononenko (EV2) on 7/15 is scheduled to begin at ~1:14m EDT [17:14 UTC - anik] (DC1 EV hatch open), to last an estimated 5 hrs 30 min, i.e., concluding at approximately 6:44pm [22:44 UTC - anik].  Part of the EVA will be supported by the DC1-based Strela 1 crane, operated via hand crank.  Main objectives of the Russian spacewalk are –

- Closeout ops on Soyuz TMA-12 Plane I inspection/pyrobolt removal (if not completed during EVA-20A);
- Installation of  a new docking target on SM PkhO (Transfer Compartment), Plane IV, for MLM [MRM-2 - anik] (if not completed during EVA-20A);
- Post-installation photography of the new docking target;
- Inspection of mounting holes for an adapter of a Kurs antenna (4AO-VKA) on PkhO-RO (SM Working Compartment, small diameter section);
- Transferring one “Yakor” foot restraint (of two) from the DC1 EVA ladder to the SM and installing it in an attachment socket at a PkhO handrail (two Yakors were installed on DC1 ladder during EVA-17A on 2/22/07);
- Installing the VSPLESK (“Burst”) science payload on the SM RO (large diameter section); and
- Removing the BIORISK-MSN (BIO-2) experiment container 1 from the DC1 for return to the station (BIORISK-MSN #1 was installed with two other BIO-2 containers during EVA-19 on 6/6/07)"

So inspection for a possible emplacement for a PDGF will not be done on this spacewalk. Is that planned to be done on the next one?

Russian Spacewalk to Outfit Space Station's Exterior
07.14.08

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition17/eva20.html

"International Space Station Commander Sergei Volkov and Flight Engineer Oleg Kononenko will install one experiment and retrieve another on July 15 during their second spacewalk in less than a week.

They also will continue to outfit the station's exterior, including the installation of a docking target on the Zvezda service module. It will help with the docking of a Russian mini research module on the space-facing side of Zvezda. That module will be launched next year.

The spacewalk, in Russian Orlan suits from the Pirs docking compartment, is scheduled to begin about 1:10 p.m. EDT [17:10 UTC - anik]. It is expected to last about 5.5 hours.

Volkov, the lead spacewalker or EV1, will wear the suit [Orlan-M #27 - anik] with red stripes. Kononenko, EV2, will wear the blue-striped suit [Orlan-M #26 - anik].

After leaving Pirs and setting up, the first task is the docking target. Kononenko will use the boom of the Strela hand-powered crane, operated by Volkov, to move to the area at the front of Zvezda, the transfer compartment, to install the docking target.

Next they'll retract Strela and use an installed spacewalkers' ladder to move to the small-diameter section of Zvezda. There they will inspect some bolt holes to be used to place an antenna adapter, part of the Kurs automated docking system. A Kurs antenna to be installed there later will be used for the first time next year.

After moving back to Strela, they'll move a foot restraint from its boom to the exterior of Zvezda. They'll return to Pirs, get the Vsplesk experiment and move with it to the large-diameter section of Zvezda.

There they'll install the experiment, which monitors seismic effects using high-energy particle streams in the near-Earth environment. Then they'll install cabling.

Finally, they'll move to the Biorisk experiment, installed by Expedition 15 spacewalkers on Zvezda. The experiment studies the effects of the space environment on microorganisms.

With it and a tool carrier they'll move down the spacewalkers' ladder and to Pirs. The closing of its hatch marks the official end of the spacewalk.

As he did last week, Flight Engineer Greg Chamitoff will remain in the Soyuz during the spacewalk. That is part of contingency preparations for the unlikely event the Pirs airlock cannot be repressurized.

The July 10 spacewalk by Volkov and Kononenko focused on inspection of their Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft and retrieval of an explosive bolt, one of 10 that help separate the spacecraft's return module from its propulsion module. The bolt will be returned to Earth for examination.

Failure of those two modules to separate on time during re-entry on the most recent two Soyuz returns resulted in ballistic entries. Those steeper-than-normal entries, while safe, resulted in high-G rides for Soyuz occupants and landings several hundred miles short of the planned area"

I am suprised no one has thought to use the WVS on the orlan suits before this.
Never really followed a russian eva except bits and pieces but its really different from a US EVA.

It's always interesting to see how much movement there is with strela....it's really different working from it then from a robotic arm which is precise to the centimeter and won't wobble around when you move.

Sergei's backpack seemed to hit the solar array?

Yes, alas... :( They are tired. Sergey has hit one of two solar arrays of Zvezda module and Oleg has hit one of Kurs antennas on Pirs module.

Oleg has retrieved container. Sergey is seeking the place for Yakor installation.

TsUP is praising the pair for their professional performance over the two EVAs including the fixing of the WAL antenna, an extra.

The helmetcam has given an extra dimension to these Russian Segment EVAs !!

The hatch will soon be closed to end the EVA.

Well done to Sergei and Oleg !!

It was not WAL antenna. It was WA radio-amateur antenna. WAL antenna is for ATV docking.

Well done to Sergei and Oleg !!

I completely agree with you! :)

So inspection for a possible emplacement for a PDGF will not be done on this spacewalk. Is that planned to be done on the next one?

AFAIK, the location of the PGDF on FGB has been  determined for a long time now.  The hooks and scars are already on FGB.

The helmetcam views from the Strela ride were wild - such a contrast from the SSRMS !!

Yes, big difference when you are not in a foot restraint, and they didn't want to use a US body restraint tether (not sure why).

Yes, Paint flakes floating away.

Oleg's camera likely stopped because the battery ran down (it wasn't charged betwen EVAs like we do on US since it is hard to instal/remove in the Orlan).

I am suprised no one has thought to use the WVS on the orlan suits before this.
Never really followed a russian eva except bits and pieces but its really different from a US EVA.

Oh it has been thought of.  But the Orlan is not designed for it and we had to canibalize cables from a US EMU.  The Russians are mixed on it.  The advantage is that it gives awesome views so they can look over the crews shoulders.  The disadvantage is that gives an awesome view so they can look over the crews shoulders (and the US can look over the Russians).  :)

Very smooth EVA.  Everything done plus some get aheads (the HAMM radio antenna being fixed and the mounting of the Yakor foot restraint).  Nice job!

Hm, thanks. I thought I had read this was a necessary task to be done.
