Molniya launch vehicle variant
« on: 04/04/2014 11:59 PM »
The attached photo is often published in Russian books depicting the Molniya launch vehicle.   However to my eye the Blok I/Blok L/payload shroud assembly has always appeared to be far longer than we see on other Molniya photos, cutaways, etc.

Can anyone identify the specific mission or explain the unusual length?
I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane - WJ.

I have seen this photo labled as the launch vehicle for "Mars 1". I was not able to veryfy, if this is correct. The position on the bulge on the side gives a hint, that it might indeed this mission (or the ill failed sister probe) -  see attached a sketch with several versions of the Molniya fairing.

Apparently the probes of the 2MV/3MV series used a very long fairing.
