MR-1: The Four-Inch Flight

65 years ago today, the first attempt to launch a Mercury capsule on a Redstone rocket (MR-1) took place. Unfortunately, a fault in the ground equipment caused the engines to shut down shortly after firing, lifting the vehicle four inches off the ground before it settled back down on the launch pad. The capsule's escape rocket was activated, causing it to jettison itself and triggering the spacecraft's parachutes to deploy.

NASA launched its first astronaut to space aboard the Mercury-Redstone vehicle a mere 6 months later.

Read more about what initially seemed like a huge blow to the Mercury program in the NASA History publication “This New Ocean: A History of Project Mercury”: https://go.nasa.gov/4r5Ppo3

The first Atlas-Able launch attempt was made on this day in 1959; after the loss of Atlas 9C and its second stage, Atlas 20D was repurposed from Project Mercury and mated with a backup second stage and the third stage and Pioneer lunar probe from 9C, which had not been on the booster when it was destroyed. The booster lifted from Pad 14 and steered downrange, the improperly vented payload shroud broke off at 45 seconds as the air pressure inside it exceeded that of the surrounding atmosphere, and the probe and third stage were ripped from the stack followed by loss of second stage T/M and guidance lock. The Atlas completed its burn and the sustainer section impacted in the Atlantic off West Africa. The second stage separated on time at 261 seconds and radar tracking showed that it also completed its burn properly. Atlas performance had been normal throughout powered flight except for low booster engine thrust during the first three seconds of operation caused by an out-of-spec LOX regulator.

https://galacticjourney.org/nov-28-1959-broken-nose-atlas-able-and-discoverer-8/

Two days after the launch. The guy who designed the payload shroud immediately accepted full responsibility for the loss of the mission. This also had a quite accurate guess as to how long it would take before another Atlas was available. The pressure equalization issue was solved by drilling holes in the shroud.

Was already mentioned I suppose but Mercury-Atlas 5 launched this day in 1961 with Enos the chimp and fully verified the booster and spacecraft as man-rated. This was the first Mercury-Atlas with the Spin Motor Rotation Detection System. The postflight report is online but the launch went so perfectly that there isn't very much to say about it; the planned three orbit mission was cut to two after a problem with a stuck thruster. Enos was recovered from the flight in good shape after having managed to remove his urine collection device and medical monitoring sensors. Unlike Ham, who survived into the Shuttle era, Enos did not last long after his flight, succumbing to an infection just slightly under a year later.

November-December 1961 had no less than three Atlas primate launches, but the other two, Goliath and Scatback, sad to say didn't fare as well as Enos.

On this day in 1970 Atlas-Centaur AC-21 unsuccessfully launched OAO-B, the third in the series of OAO orbiting telescopes. The payload fairing did not detach on time and the resultant excess weight retarded missile velocity. The Atlas and Centaur burned to propellant depletion but orbit could not be achieved and the Centaur with the shroud and satellite still inside fell into the Atlantic Ocean. Postflight investigation failed to determine an exact cause of the shroud failure but it was thought that the electrical and pyrotechnic mechanisms operated properly and that it was most likely a mechanical fault of the latches.

In short, another Atlas vehicle shroud failure and sadly there doesn't seem to be any pics of AC-21 online anywhere though there are HACL film clips of the launch and subsequent testing of the payload fairing.
