One always must be careful of the ambitiousness of an MSFC document that uses the term "The Master Plan", but Ernst Stuhlinger and Joseph C. King came up with a shockingly modern take on how to get to Mars.

Their transfer vehicle has 8 ion engines powered by a reactor well-separated from the crew. The crew itself is well-shielded and experiences artificial gravity due to the rotation of the vehicle. The landing craft is somewhat glossed over, but everything is exactly how you'd do it if told to build a nuclear-electric Mars ship today...
