Global market key for PSLV commercial launches, govt demand alone not sufficient: Godrej Aerospace

In an interview to ET Infra, Surendra M. Vaidya, Executive Vice President and Business Head, Godrej Aerospace....

Quote
If more PSLVs are required, first, we must find out more applications of PSLVs and whether PSLV can really be a commercial rocket and can it compete in the international market.

To that effect, ISRO through NewSpace India Ltd has floated an inquiry and we have joined with some of the consortiums for the productionisation of the PSLVs under the private sector.

There is a need for the private sector to not depend on government only for commercial launches of PSLVs but also take this rocket to the global market, because the government has certain numbers or certain requirements, but those numbers are not going to be enough for private industry to invest and create exclusive infrastructure. So surely, more satellites are required to be launched from the global business opportunity angle. The key would be to bring down our cost of production by 30-35%, then only we will be able to compete in the international market.

Quote
Yes, our current installed capacity will easily be able to make 25 engines in a year. In fact, we can make additional four or five engines and the production rate can go up to 30 liquid engines comprising combinations between Vikas engine, cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engine.

Quote
For the Vikas engines, over 80% of the raw materials is now produced in India, while 20% material is still coming from abroad.

Goan firm supplies key shroud for ISRO launch

Panaji: Kineco Kaman Composites, a Goan firm based at Pilerne, delivered an equipment bay shroud to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for use on the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) III.

The firm will deliver four more shrouds to ISRO by December 2023, said founder of the Kineco Group and chairman and managing director of Kineco Kaman, Shekhar Sardessai.

Quote
“We are extremely jubilant and proud to be a part of ISRO’s GSLV Mark-III programme and contribute towards India’s self-reliance in space technologies. We are pleased to meet the expectations of ISRO and VSSC and to have fulfilled the trust placed by them when they decided to outsource this critical activity to the private sector,” said Sardessai.

Quote
The equipment bay shroud assembly is a complex and critical structure that houses sensitive equipment of the GSLV. The composite segments are fabricated using carbon fiber and aluminum core material, titanium and aluminium hardware.

HAL-L&T wins over 824-cr contract for making 5 PSLVs

Bengaluru: Manufacture of polar space launch vehicles (PSLVs) — which was the preserve of premier agency Isro for nearly three decades — has been awarded to an HAL-L&T consortium which will become the first group outside the storied space campus to produce five PSLVs in the coming months, reports Chethan Kumar. This is expected to pave the way for commercialisation of other rockets such as SSLV and GSLV.

Space PSU NewSpace India opened the commercial bids of the three shortlisted entities — HAL-L&T, BHEL (single firm) and the BEL-Adani Alpha Design-BEML consortium — on Wednesday. The winning bid quoted Rs 824 crore, BHEL Rs 1,129 crore and the third group Rs 1,218 crore, a source said. These figures exclude taxes.

Quote
HAL chairman and managing director R Madhavan told TOI on Friday: "We've won the contract for five PSLVs. While HAL is the lead partner, work will be shared equally with L&T. We will use all our vendors. We feel we were best equipped to handle a contract of this magnitude. While some help will come from Isro on the mission side, we will carry out most of the work. Slowly, PSLV will become an outsourced item for Isro."

Quote
Adani-Alpha Design CMD Col (retd) HS Shankar said their consortium had to consider fresh investments for PSLV, whereas HAL-L&T already had infrastructure, a key reason that explains difference in the quoted price.

He said: "Alpha is already an important player in Isro's launch vehicle programmes through our fully owned subsidiaries Tokol (Peenya-Bengaluru) and Kortas (Thiruvananthapuram). Almost 15% of PSLV is made at these factories. Given that the winning consortium must procure Isro-qualified items from vendors, our subsidiaries will continue to work on the programme."

"The first PSLV-XL rocket is expected to be realised in 24 months from the date of award of the contract. Subsequently one rocket every six months has to be delivered to NSIL," the official added.

The first rocket is expected to be realised sometime during the second half of 2024 and the balance four rockets will be delivered during 2025 and 2026 at two rockets per year.

Quote
According to the space sector official, the Hindustan Aeronautics-L&T combine will deliver all the stages, including the heat shield, at ISRO's rocket port in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

The rocket's first stage will be assembled at the launch pad in Sriharikota.

The stacking of the rocket stages and the satellite will be done by ISRO.

The NSIL will market the rockets for commercial flights. The rockets will also be used for national space missions.

The MLP for GSLV-3 has travelled there and been stored there during certain GSLV-2/PSLV operations.

Cabinet approves Transfer of 10 In-orbit Communication Satellites from Government of India to M/s. NewSpace India Ltd.(NSIL)

Posted On: 08 JUN 2022 4:45PM by PIB Delhi

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from Government of India (Gol) to M/s.NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), a wholly owned Public Sector Enterprise of GOI under the administrative control of the Department of Space.

The Union Cabinet has also approved increasing the authorized share capital of NSIL from Rs.1000 crore to Rs.7500 crore.

Transfer of these assets to NSIL will further provide the desired financial autonomy to the company to realize capital intensive programmes/ projects and thereby offering huge employment potential and technology spin-off to other sectors of the economy. This approval is expected to trigger domestic economic activity in space sector and increase India's share in the global space market.

The Space Sector reforms mandated NSIL to undertake end-to-end commercial space activities and function as a full-fledged satellite operator. NSIL functioning as a single-window operator will also facilitate the ease of doing business in space sector. NSIL Board will now be empowered to price the transponders as per the market dynamics and global trends in the Satellite Communication sector. NSIL is also authorized to offer and allocate capacity as per its internal policies and guidelines.

Alpha is scheduled to sign an agreement for transfer of technology of the small satellite platform — Indian Mini Satellite-1 Bus — on Monday. A satellite bus or spacecraft bus is a model on which satellites or spacecraft are based. The bus is the infrastructure of the spacecraft that provides locations for payload.

Quote
Shankar said: “We will be among the firms that will receive the technology. It’s affordable when we look at what it might cost to build it from scratch or if a firm were to get it from a foreign agency or company. In any case, no foreign agency would give the whole tech to us.”

Quote
Both Alpha and NSIL did not immediately reveal the cost of the technology. While sources in NSIL confirmed that even other firms will get the IMS-1 technology, they did not divulge the names.

Why so cagey about the SSLV-D1?  Is it because it's a new design, that there are developmental issues involved( with software, control, testing) , or is it simply that launching it is not a top priority since there is no commercial benefit immediately for the vehicle, and ISRO presently needs income after the Covid slowdown?
