Anechoic chamber testing
« on: 05/22/2018 05:41 am »
I encountered the following text:

"The SpaceX founder’s tweet shows the Crew Dragon in an anechoic chamber at NASA’s Plum Brook Station in Cleveland, Ohio. The super soundproof room is the perfect setting for this futuristic-looking spacecraft to shine:"

at

I'm somewhat mystified.

The benefit of an RF anechoic chamber for antenna testing is obvious.

However, the article specifically refers to "the super soundproof room".

What benefit does an acoustic anechoic chamber have for spacecraft testing?

Or, is the author of the article confused?

Thanks

It's Inverse and Inverse is incredibly bad, hyperbolic, and inaccurate with the vast majority of their STEM coverage. I would strongly recommend not reading them unless there is no alternative. Not gonna namedrop my outlet, but I recommend SpaceNews, Ars Technica, and The Verge for balanced, entertaining day-to-day coverage of SpaceX news.

And NASASpaceflight.com for deep-dives, of course ;)

Thanks for your reply.

You're probably right.

Just a poorly written article.

Thanks

It's not in there for antenna testing, it's in there to make sure it doesn't leak too much noise in the wrong frequencies.

On a side note from my experience with large anechoic chambers, they do tend to be pretty soundproofed. It's a side effect of being sealed and all the absorption cones.

It's also unclear to me if this EMI testing is being done *at* Plum Brook, or just before being sent to Plum Brook.

Before.  Plum Brook is doing environmental and acoustic testing.
