I think this is what he was recently working on:

Fascinating concept.  We were lucky he was around this long.

Agreed.

Not to belittle his passing, but if a new space telescope is sent up, particularly if it studies particle or quantum physics in space, I hope it bears his name and explores the theories he pioneered.

Not just a great mind but also a great populariser of science who had a foot in so many worlds.

Tributes from within and outside the world of science.

We should celebrate a man who lived fifty years more than he was once predicted too, and how much he achieved in that time.

Awesom intellect.

His contributions to science can never be over estimated.

My sister was at one time part of his team of doctors.

RIP Mr Hawking, Sir

oh dang. One of the most brilliant minds in human history, with Albert Einstein (and others). An incredible man with such intelligence, such a trajectory made a tragedy by that awful illness he had. A bold mind locked in a cage of constant pain and suffering.
Well, he lived half a century with an illness that could only go worse. Yet he bet all odds and lived up to 76.

Ad astra, Stephen !

21st century Britain is awful enough as it is without the greats from the previous one passing on. People like him really put the universe into perspective, even if most of us (myself included) are far too dumb to get what he was saying.

RIP Stephen Hawking, we're going to miss you.

Saddened to learn of the death of Professor Stephen Hawking this morning ( 14 March 2018 ).

In 1976, I introduced Professor Hawking - along with a number of other leading astronomers - to the concept of Space Colonisation at a lecture presentation I did at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge along with my guest , American space scientist Dr.Tom Heppenheimer. ( BBC Radio Stoke did an interview with myself and Dr Heppenheimer at the time).

I introduced the Space Colonisation idea to the UK and western Europe from 1975 onwards and founded the West European  L5 Space Colonisation Society which later merged with the world's largest spaceflight group , the US based National Space Society ( NSS ). In 1975 it was BIG news having made the front page of many UK national newspapers and featured on national TV/radio !

In his later and recent years, Professor Hawking was a wonderful champion for the concept of space colonisation - which is the idea of building self sustaining human habitats and environments on either planetary surfaces or in huge, slowly rotating cylinders that could sustain populations of anywhere from 10,000 up to 1 million people constructed from lunar or asteroidal mining materials. The first steps towards asteroid mining are about to begin shortly with an unmanned asteroid  explorer probe launch, the Arkyd probe.  Rename it "Hawking One" ?

Thank you for inspiring my students for so many years especially those with special needs... Your efforts that brought physics to the layperson was remarkable and your sense of humor will not be forgotten... May you rest in peace sir...

RELEASE 18-014

NASA Honors Legacy of Renowned Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking

The following is a statement from acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot on the passing of visionary physicist Stephen Hawking, who died at his home in Cambridge, England, early Wednesday morning.
“Today, the world lost a giant among men, whose impact cannot be overstated. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Stephen Hawking.

“Stephen’s breakthroughs in the fields of physics and astronomy not only changed how we view the cosmos, but also has played, and will continue to play, a pivotal role in shaping NASA’s efforts to explore our solar system and beyond.

“Along with groundbreaking and inspiring work came another attribute that made Stephen a hero not just to younger generations, but also to his peers. A longtime friend to NASA, Stephen was a passionate communicator who wanted to share the excitement of discovery with all.

“His loss is felt around the world by all he inspired with his work and his personal story of perseverance.”

N.D. Tyson once told a story of highly advanced aliens that were studying homo sapiens.  The being called "Steven Hawking" was judged to have above-average intelligence for humans, about as bright as one of their own school children. :)  We should all be happy that the contents of his fabulous mind have been transferred to books, articles, papers, etc.
Launches attended:  Apollo 11, ASTP (@KSC, not Baikonur!), STS-41G, STS-125, EFT-1, Starlink G4-24, Artemis 1

These RIP threads are for people to post their marks of respect and NOT for people to question such marks of respect. If you are of the latter, simply don't post on these threads.

Can you imagine if someone had replied to "one of the greatest astronauts" on the John Young RIP thread with "Come on, that's a bit much, Buzz was better."

Exactly. So please don't. I'm sure there will be threads (probably not on this site) where there will be debates on the league table of such people, but now is not the time.

Thread trimmed.
