Chris, I read that NEEMO might be having some funding issues due to budget cuts.  Do you know anything about that?

I bloody hope not Ben! Not heard that news myself, and it can't cost that much because it's co-sponsored by the marine side.

That'd be shocking. Do you have any links about that?

I read that the Aquarius reef base itself may be closed due to lack of funding! :o

Another article regarding funding problems for Aquarius Reef Base, this one from a local Keys newspaper - not looking good:

Just an update on this, but it looks like Aquarius will be closing down for good at the end of this year - so NEEMO 16 was likely the final NEEMO. :(

Rats.

Another of my favorite NASA projects cancelled.

I know it is heresy here, but HSF could have no rockets at all and probably have got us a lot closer to colonizing another world by concentrating on a self sufficient manned+teleoperated base on the ocean floor.

Also, the next time BP does a boo-boo, NASA could spring into action with a battlecry like "Thunderbirds are GO!" and go and fix the thing, and send BP the bill. Instant 40 billion profit.  ::)

Rats.

Aquarius is a NOAA facility, NASA just gets to use it on occasion in conjunction with NOAA.

Save Aquarius!

http://www.indiegogo.com/SaveARB?a=1112886

Hi, just came across this Kickstarter concept. Im quite enthusiastic about it because I would like to put my money where my mouth is, but when the smallest thing costs a hundred million, what is the point? I only have beer money! Like the x-prize I think this concept can have a much larger payback than the money you put in, because a small bit of investment might encourage some graduate in this direction, and then you have just brought yourself a lifetimes's research.

I just threw a tiny bit of money at a "fusion propulsion" concept (which I doubt will produce a fusion rocket but may encourage someone on to a Phd), and then had a look around for other kickstarter-like fundraisers. I found this one.

I would like to see more fundraisers like this where a few tens of dollars from several thousands of people might make a difference. Initially we may shoot money in silly directions but it will mature, and it is not like sending your life savings off to nigeria ;)

The money is so small that really it is just a statement that these things matter to you. Maybe someone is listening.
