Author Topic: ARTICLE AND VIDEO: Riding onboard Atlantis during re-entry  (Read 192751 times)

Offline Chris Bergin

Update: We now have four of these videos (Endeavour's being the most visually stunning) on L2. The one below was the first we got hold of, and the following article is related to just that video.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2006/10/riding-onboard-atlantis-during-re-entry/

This is a short, lower res clipped highlight video from the 2 hour, 355 mb video on L2. The video wasn't released to the public (it was filmed for the middeck crew to watch re-entry on a monitor on the middeck.)

The L2 video is continuous from APU start, through to De-Orbit burn, Re-Entry and rolls - all hand held camcorder, HAC (HUD Cam) and landing, through to disembarking.

I wanted to allow as many people to see this as possible, given you don't normally get to see and hear this....and I didn't want to restrict it all to L2.

If you want to see the whole thing, L2's for you. For a taster, download from the attachment.

Enjoy! :)

CLICK HERE - OR RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS ON THIS LINK - FOR THE VIDEO SAMPLE

ADDITIONAL: On request, we have attached another part of the video, a five minute clip of deorbit burn cropped from the full video is attached (actually not all that eventful compared to the rest of the video).

I've had to reduce the quality of this clip, as we did with the 'taster' so it uploads into this non L2 thread:

Click or right click save as the attachment link for the Deorbit Burn video:

They chat about the g increases (and adapting) quite a bit throughout the video.
One thing I was waiting for, but was never asked or mentioned was how 'heavy' the camera was beginning to get. ;)

Yeah...the partial video tape that survived the Columbia disaster and was broadcast by NASA shortly thereafter is essentially analogous to the re-entry part of this video...

...the video out the windows as seen here would be hard to top, but video with the crew intercom audio during ascent (as the STS-113 crew downlinked during their flight) is also very interesting.

Does anyone know what company supplies NASA with the countdown timers the crew has scattered throughout the flight deck during a mission? They're inexpensive egg timers.

It used to be a Speedmaster Proffesional. Some still take them up.

The device you are seeing is officially called "Multiple-Memory Digital Stopwatch."

Just sat through the full length video on L2. It's better than any movie I've watched. Visually stunning, but I love the talking between Fergie and Jett. What strikes out to me is Jett is commander, but he doesn't 'need' to order anyone around. Real team effort and a I don't know if it's a way of coping with nerves or just how professional they are, but the joking and laughter at times, times where it could go wrong like it did on STS-107, is really interesting.

Can't wait for the launch version of this video!!!

Component Design Northwest, Inc.

The model NASA uses is the PT1A. It retails for about $20:

The NASA timers have a different logo on the front, and of course the back is covered in hook Velcro. The same timer is sold under different brand names, including the Pyrex Professional:

I think Columbia, in her own way, made this videos drama level what it is. Correct me if I am wrong. Before her loss the video would be more eye candy with a little bit of tension to most people, but knowing what happened to Alantis's sister, you can't help but think about that as you watch it.  Adds a bit to the overall product I think. The fact that these seasoned pros waltz through it like they do is truly awesome. And in no way do I mean any disrespect to either crew in saying that

I don't notice that at all... I think it's as close as any of us ever will get to being onboard as it comes down. Since we know this one made it fine, that sort of suspense or "second story" isn't really there for me.

Just downloading the new one, another DVD to be burned, although the STS-115 re-entry video is pride of place in my collection. If you like the trailer, the 355mb full version is for you, even if NASA should have released this anyway, it's the best PR around for the Shuttle.

The full length video starts with deorbit preps, so that'll be a good idea to have this running on another screen to get a great on board idea of what's going on.

This is amazing!  Just watched the teaser and I must say it really puts the human element back into the work they do up there, and I have to agree it would do amazing PR for the shuttle program!

Of course, this video IS the final straw... I will be signing up for L2 momentarily so I can watch the entire video.  I'm sold.
I hope this site continues to grow, and become a large positive presence (more so than it already is), in the space-fan community!

I've seen it on L2 and hands down it's THE best space flight video ever, and amazing PR for sure, but L2 is even better. You get a real respect for the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at NASA, especially people like Wayne Hale, who must be some sort of machine :)

To be honest, it was too cool to be sat on the flight deck for me to to think about the point Columbia was lost and it might be best not to.

Going to watch it again with some friends tonite on my plasma for about the 100th times :) THE coolest thing ever.

I've been sent a specific request just to see the deorbit burn, so I've attached it to the opening post.

I asked kindly if Chris could do this, and he did.  Thank you very much, Chris.  Great video.  :)

EDIT:  Only reason I asked is because they don't show you the deorbit burn on television, and I've seen about everything else.

The 115 video is brilliant. Although I'm was kinda hoping one of the future flights which have a camcorder on board will point the camera out of the back windows of the flight deck, so that we might get to see the OMS fire up.

For the de-orbit burn? That would be impossible as the aft flight windows only looks into the payload bay and the PLB doors are closed at that time!

I don't know if Chris wants to do another trailer, but one of the new re-entry camcorder videos on L2 is even more eventful than this one, with sparks flying past the windows and some great crew chatter.

Might do, might do a seperate thread seen as they were key missions (the new videos).

I really want to join L2, but I have a question on the videos. Are they in some sort of player box like on a lot of sites now. I hate that as it's buffering and shaky unless you have an amazing connection, or can you actually download them to your hard drive? Please tell me they aren't quicktime too?

I did that too Andrew. I had the STS-115 reentry video running on the big TV all synced up from deorbit burn. Really made it all more real.
I even went a stage further, with the launch from MCC of the nearly went bad STS-93 video from L2, from T-31 to ET sep, during the actual launch, but I am a big space flight junkie :)

There's a trailer for that too (added here now)

I think it would be dangerous to try to capture Soyuz re-entry with a handheld camera - it would get thrown around at parachute opening, and if it wasn't 100% secured to a fixture or stowage area at landing, it could kill at touchdown. Also, the state of Soyuz windows is unknown - do they get smudged?

I've been thinking about that too. The superb re-entry video for Gemini and Apollo now on the new L2 Historical section show it's a fixed camera, but the views out of the window are still stunning.

Without being too cheeky, but could you put a trailer up for the Apollo or Gemini re-entry videos?

Sure, later. Might do some from the amazing Buran videos we've got on L2 now first, as they compete with the video this thread is about.

Wow, anyone noticed the first post, not the download link to the trailer, but the later addition of the deborbit burn?

This deserves a raise back up after watching the full video on L2. Really is impressive, especially the visuals and audio, you even hear the wind noise pick up as they head towards a lit up Florida coast, but more so the professionalism of these astronauts.

I've already mentioned this, but what exactly is the problem with that? It's a free teaser. I've made a point of making a comment on the video everytime I see it, saying that the full version is here.

In fact, there's a good idea. Chris, put all of the short teaser videos for L2 stuff on YouTube with information on where to get the full versions. Hello instant marketing opportunity.

If we wanted things on youtube, we'd do it ourselves or give permission, like with the Endeavour version of this re-entry video.

Of course, this is only a trailer, not the 2hr video on L2, and accreditation can help buffer such things moving on there - and sometimes help.

Posting a note due to one new L2 member not being clear on where the full 2hr version is.

1) This is the trailer, and the links in the article are to the trailer.

To get to the full L2 version, click the following (tag first) to the download links:

Answering both questions here. Welcome to the site's forum by the way (good username ;) )

We removed the adverts from the articles when we moved to the new news site, as they were becoming too cluttered/messy - and detracting from the article's content. But there's no change in content, everything remains available in L2 (and is being built on daily) as we never purge/delete content.

I'd like to add how extremely well organized L2 is.  Nothing is removed...so even content that is three years old is still there...and the Tag Cloud makes it extremely easy to find.  The search works well on this new forum too.  This site, especially L2, has by far the most information compared to any other that I visit, but it's still the easiest to find the specific item you're looking for.

It works fine for me at 8.6 MB.  Not sure what to say other than clear your temp files, cache, etc..

OK, that works now - it was Firedownloaders fault.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=4865 throws a 404 error anyways..

I think that leads to the full 355mb video?

thanks

Nah.  That'd be the article that went together with this thread.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2006/10/riding-onboard-atlantis-during-re-entry/

That's the current link for it.

The full 355mb video is on NASASpaceFlight L2's Ultimate Video section.  It's well worth the $20 alone for a month of L2, once you get hooked, you won't want to stop.  ;)

20 bucks for two months you mean ;) Easily the best for value money I've ever spent on the internet.

Hi everyone. WOW. I've always wanted to be a Shuttle astronaut, but I know they will have retired the Shuttles before I leave college, which is a stupid decision if you ask me. Thank you SO MUCH for letting me see what it is like inside during reentry. So calm and professional, with God helping them home safely. Beautiful!
