Any chance the 2nd stage could have reentered over New England? A newscaster friend reported a meteor tonight. http://whdh.com/news/meteor-spotted-in-the-sky-across-new-england/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
The Ursids shower just occurred over the last few days.

RKK Energia now officially acknowledges loss of signal:

https://www.energia.ru/ru/news/news-2017/news_12-27_2.html

According to the published information the loss of signal is analogical to the situations with Foton-M in 2014, Stereo-9 in 2016 and KazSat 2017.

Congrats to the makers of the Zenit rocket on returning the launch vehicle to flight.

On the other hand, it's a shame that AngoSat 1 had its own problems after deployment.

Ladies and gentlemen... Rogozin:

http://www.interfax.ru/russia/593698

Anomalous space launches are the result of systematic errors in the management of Roskosmos, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin in an interview with Russia-24.

According to him, the average number of employees under the age of 35 in Rosatom and the defense industry is 30%. "In Roskosmos this figure is somewhere around 18.5%," he said. "Rejuvenation of the staff is very difficult," Rogozin said.

Angosat-1 remains in orbit
Luanda - The Angolan State Secretary for Information Technology, Manuel Homem said after participating in the Council of Ministers meeting that Angosat-1 satellite has made its normal trajectory and is in orbit for which it was planned ... we have the satellite under control.
Further information will be provided “in the next eight or 16 hours on its state, readiness" – he said.
On Wednesday midmorning and without citing any official source, national and foreign media outlets reported the loss of contact with Angosat.
On Tuesday, the Zenit rocket with the first Angolan satellite on board, Angosat-1, was launched by Russia from the Baikonur cosmodrome, after having been tested numerous times.
According to Roscosmos, Russia's State Space Activities Corporation, the rocket put the satellite into orbit as planned, separating it from the orbital transfer stage.

This means Angola will stop payments on the loan which Russia provided to Angola to order satellite and launch.

Perhaps insurance is in case of a launch anomaly, but a spacecraft failure would be covered by the manufacturer?

And of course there will be the issue of finger pointing with the satellite manufacturer blaming the failure on the launch vehicle even after a clean launch and separation.

The spacecraft is insured on the basis that it is a total loss.

Update:

According to Interfax (http://www.interfax.ru/russia/593746) the reason for the failure is a short circuit.

The latest article, just published on RIA Novosti (https://ria.ru/space/20171228/1511864755.html), also confirms that so far attempts to contact the satellite have been unsuccessful.

What is the standard amount of time after which the satellite is declared dead? (or is there one?)

I understand that some satellites have come back in contact after random durations.

If the solar generator has not deployed the lifetime of the satellite is directly linked to the capacity of its batteries..

1600x1067 seems to be their usual size.  Lack of genuine hi-res's of Zenit launches is most frustrating :(

The satellite successfully navigated in space, opened solar panels and antennas, began transmitting telemetric information to Earth. Communication with the spacecraft lasted 42 minutes, after which it suddenly broke off.

- Experts are trying to restore the device. Our employees study the previously received telemetric information, make attempts to get in touch, - RSC Energia told Izvestia .

The battery charge on the satellite should be enough for 10-16 hours of uninterrupted operation after separation from Fregat  (5:54 Moscow time on December 27). But RSC Energia is sure that the opportunity to establish communication will continue after this period, as the solar panels managed to open up.
