Ideas for NASA "Behind the Scenes"?
« on: 02/03/2011 05:34 pm »
For those of you who are fellow fans of the Behind the Scenes videos with Astronaut Mike Massimino, do you have any ideas for what you would like to see next?

Josh Byerly, who produces them for NASA, would like to know.

Space Pete has been keeping track of the videos here:
http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=22862.0

Post your ideas in this thread and we'll make sure that Josh sees them.

Thanks!

They've been brilliant so far. Mass is a natural and the more they can do the better.

We might be due a tour around the flight deck and middeck?

Mass at a FRR or MMT would be fun. Can imagine him whispering and then asking Mr Shannon how its going. That'd be great to see inside those closed door meetings if possible.

The one where Mass was on the launch pad under Discovery's SSMEs was great. I'd also like a tour around a powered up flight deck.

Anything, basically. Mass is great and you could have him talking about anything and I'd listen.

Maybe a tour of the Ares I ML, if it's politically ok to do so with the state of Constellation? Must be an amazing view and I doubt Mass is scared of heights :D

I don't remember a MCC tour; other than one with during shuttle sim. But what about a tour of the ISS FCR? Maybe during the weekend or sleep shift; it a "surprise visit"! Though I'm sure the Flight Director would have to approve in advance ;-)

I know they've gone inside the OPF and to MAF; but I don't think they've spent much time in the VAB.

How about a look at the SRB stacking process, the ET checkout cell, ET-SRB mating and Orbiter-ET mating?

(Actually, that sounds like 2-3 features)

The VAB cranes! They've lifted so much history over the bays over the years and we've not seen much of those.

Yup, I've got a great idea.....make them all available in HD (720p) on You Tube's NASA TV Channel!

Oooh, now let's see:

• A tour of the ISS mock-up in Building 9 at JSC. Maybe Mass could tag along with an Expedition crew who are doing their training?

• A tour of the SSPF at KSC, paying particular attention to the Node 1 STA! ;)

• A tour of Ellington Field, including crew room, T-38 hangar, inside the cockpit, etc. In-flight footage would be awesome!

The VAB, as KEdward5 mentioned. We've seen these huge cranes help stack the shuttle, but never been in the driver's seat. Also we get to see both the low bay and hi bay cranes from that perspective. :)  Not to mention even in documentaries on tv, this is the only place not filmed or shown in detail. Imagine that view in an IMAX film.

I've always wanted to see NASA's astronaut beach house. It's described in so many books, but it would be neat to get a look at it today.

1. I'd like to see him in one of the convoy vehicles after the shuttle lands, following through to when the crew exits onto the tarmac, and then the orbiter tow back to the OPF (assuming she lands at KSC).

2. A trip through the Orbiter Payload Changeout Room in the RSS, ideally for a real payload like AMS on STS-134

3. A trip with the ice team  :)

I'd love to see the stacking process, or payload checkout on the RSS, or even another launch rehearsal, the one he did with STS-132 was fantastic.

I'd like to see a look into Astronaut Group 20's training, or even an interview with one of them.  Would be interesting as they are the first post-Shuttle group, and many of them were born after Apollo.

If Mass gets an ISS flight someday I would love for him to do some behind the scenes with that, or any ISS flight if he can, at least the training the do in the states.

I'd like to see one in the back seat of a T-38.

I second the idea of Mass doing a behind the scenes of a Soyuz launch, or training for that, or some of the survival training.

Also maybe a behind the scenes of the astronauts in quarantine and maybe the Physics Lab at KSC (I've been in there and it's pretty neat!) They've developed some pretty cool technology, not only for shuttle, but for everything.
My views are mine, and mine alone and DO NOT reflect that of my employer nor my place of employment.

Mass on an ISS flight would be fantastic, the footage from STS-125 is excellent.

I'd have to throw in my vote for this one! Especially the old Apollo-era 250 t cranes.
