Author Topic: Gravity simulations of all exosystems discovered by the TESS spacecraft  (Read 3180 times)

Hey fellow forum members,

This is something I'm really excited to share with you: my open source gravity simulator, Harmony of the Spheres, now includes simulations of all exoplanetary systems discovered by the NASA TESS spacecraft. All the data is fetched from the NASA ExoPlanetArchive - https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu, and when a new system is added to that archive, it will automatically be included in Harmony of the Spheres.

All simulations include habitable zones so that you can see if any of a system's planets orbit in the zone where liquid water could potentially exist on the surface of a world, and they also include the orbits of Mercury and Earth so that one can easily compare these systems with our own solar system and get an idea of just how funky some of them are.
Here is a simulation of the L 98-59 system that was discovered a couple of weeks ago:

For the other TESS systems, just click on the scenario menu in the top left corner. You'll see that Harmony of the Spheres also includes systems discovered by the Keck, McDonald, La Silla and Roque de los Muchachos observatories. Once I've developed an improved user interface for filtering exosystems, the plan is to include every scenario that is included in the ExoPlanetArchive database.

I tried it, pressed some buttons and it did cool things. However I have no idea what I'm looking at.  Something that explains what all the controls and settings do might be helpful for non planetary scientists.
