Stan,

I based my reasoning on this report that appeared 6 days ago - http://goo.gl/Fj85q

- Pradeep

This article was mentioned as being questionable on another thread. It raises a few questions; like how many upper stages remain; and why are they modifying an engine pump?

Quote
Of the seven engines procured from Russia , only two are left, said Ramakrishnan.
- six have been used?

From the Mission Profile posted above, there is only GSLV D4 flying in the FY 2011-12. This, ISRO, Chairman said will fly with a Russian cryo to check out the vehicle design. So, the GSAT-14 would likely fly on a GSLV Mk-I.

- Pradeep

Taking into account:
A) http://www.deccanchronicle.com/node/23871 dated April 21:
“Isro is re-working on the [GSLV MKI] design specifications and planning for a test flight by the end of the first half of 2012,” said Mr P. S. Veeraraghavan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre,

B) (http://www.rian.ru/science/20110420/366470673.html  dated April 20)
"According to the head of ISRO Radhakrishnan, after careful check of 12КRB it is necessary to make a test launch which is planned for 2011-2012 (will end on March, 31st, 2012). After that, India will not have any Russian cryogenic engine (altogether seven units have been bought ), and the following GSLV will go to space in 2012 with an Indian engine  which is now under completion."

C) from the ISRO 2010-11 annual report (uploaded on March 29), GSAT-14 is to be launched on GSLV-MKII

It could be concluded that GSAT-14 will be onboard that GSLV-MKII planned for 2012.

Stan,

I think this - http://www.hindustantimes.com/PSLV-C16-successfully-launched-satellites-injected-into-orbit/Article1-687398.aspx - will clarify that a bit:
Quote
A high pressure booster pump in an indigenous cryogenic engine that had not performed upto expectations in an earlier GSLV mission has been redesigned and successfully tested. “We are even planning to integrate into the remaining Russian cryo engine to boost its performance,” he said.

I think it was this booster that failed on GSLV D3 was redesigned and when tested performed well - so ISRO might have introduced this design change into the Russian cryo as well.

input~2,

I think a careful reading (see marking in blue) would suggest that the Russian cryo would be tested first and this would be followed with a test flight of the Indian cryo. Perhaps, this means that there will be a second GSLV flight in 2012.

The Mission Profile on the ISRO Annual Report is not an absolute timeline. It is a rough timeline "as planned" not "as executed". ISRO is still testing the Indian cryo sub-systems. It would need at least 3-4 tests at a system level before it will be flown. This would probably push it to the end of 2012 in the best case scenario.

Let's see how this works out.

Adding to Pradeep's discussion:

There may be two sort of experimental launches now
1. GSLV D4....testing the modified Indian cryogenic engine.

2. GSLV F5(?)...testing the changes made to the GSLV design with the sole Russian engine left

One of my souces in ISRO indicated that ISRO plans to launch GSLV MK-III with only the first and second stages into a LEO....that's a test launch with S200 boosters and the L110 engine

can any one confirm this...?
Is this feasible ?

Hmm. I was suggesting that GSLV D4 would be the one with a Russian cryo and the GSLV D5 will be the one with modified Indian cryo engine. D4 will test vehicle design with a proven Russian engine whilst D5 will test the Indian cryo was how I understood it.

Perhaps we should move this discussion out of the Indian Launch Schedule discussion?

Yes, if posts are not directly linked to the Indian launch schedule, it's best to start separate threads..

As far I know, ISRO is seriously considering flying the GSLV with the Russian cryogenic stage. The shroud that stage needs to be strengthened and tested. A very expensive and long procedure for a stage which will be launched only once. The last launch of the Mk-I was supposed to be GSAT-7 which was supposed to take place this year if all had gone well.

IMHO, there is a reasonable chance that the last Russian cryo stage may go unused. D4 will indeed be a Mk-II development flight.

According to the Director of Sathish Dhawan Space Centre:

- PSLV C-17 will be launched in July
- PSLV-C18 will be launched in September
- PSLV-C19 will be launched by this year end
- Building of GSLV-Mk III will be over by 2012 end and launch would be in 2013.
The first stage, solid propellant booster  S-200 has been tested and qualified; second and liquid propellant stage L-110 has also been tested. Work is yet to be completed in third stage, the cryogenic stage.

PSLV are workhorses with respectable payloads of about 1600 kg. In 2011, PSLVs will launch GSAT-12, the Megha-Tropiques satellite, GSAT-6 and Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1), all from Sriharikota. Another GSAT would also be launched from Kourou, French Guiana, by an Ariane rocket from Arianespace in June 2011.

Source.
We had consistent ISRO sources indicating just 3 more PSLV launches until 31 December 2011. BTW, GSAT-6, with a lift-off mass of 2200kg, can't be launched by PSLV :-[

ISRO has decided to review the entire GSLV program. As a result, all major launches are being rescheduled:
- Chandrayaan-2 launch is postponed to 2014
- GSLV MKII return to flight will carry GSAT-6 in 2012
- If that goes well GSAT-7 will be launched with GSLV-MKII
- ISRO is now uncertain about using the last  of the seven cryogenic engines it had sourced from Russia
http://indiatoday.intoday.in/site/story/isro-reschedules-moon-mission-chandrayaan-2/1/138213.html

According to ISRO chairman:
- PSLV-C17 confirmed in July
- PSLV-C18 in September
- PSLV-C19 in October

According to ISRO Chairman, GSLV-MkIII static testing will continue till 2012 (source), so the experimental launch will not take place before 2013.

PSLV C-17 launch planned in mid-July (source)
