Student Experiments Launched to Space on a NASA Suborbital Rocket

Approximately 60 university student experiments were successfully launched Friday, June 24, 2022, aboard a NASA suborbital sounding rocket from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The sounding rocket lifted off at 5:35 a.m. EDT. The mission is part of the RockOn! and RockSat-C programs designed for students to learn and apply skills in building experiments for suborbital space flight. About 140 students in the programs were at Wallops to view the launch.

Conducted with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia, RockOn! is in its fourteenth year and RockSat-C its thirteenth year.

The 39-foot (11.9 m) tall rocket carried 39 experiments from the RockOn program and seven experiments in the RockSat-C program. Also, approximately 80 small cubes with experiments developed by middle- and high-school students were flown as part of the Cubes in Space program, a partnership between idoodlelearning inc., Wallops and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium.

Launched aboard a two-stage Terrier-Improved Orion rocket, the student experiments flew to an altitude of nearly 70.5 miles (113.5 km). After descending by parachute and landing in the Atlantic Ocean, the experiments were recovered. The experiments will arrive back at Wallops later in the day and returned to the students to see how their experiments performed.

The next launch from Wallops is RockSat-X on a Terrier-Improved Malemute scheuled for the morning of August 9, 2022. RockSat-X is the upper level of the three-tier student program, with experiments developed that are more complex than those in RockOn and RockSat-C.

MesOrion Sounding Rocket Launches

NASA will test a new capability for supporting science research in the mesosphere with the launch of two rockets from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia on Feb. 16, 2023. The two Improved-Orion suborbital sounding rockets will launch about 30 minutes apart between 7-9:30 a.m. EST.

Launch updates will be provided via Wallops’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. A livestream is scheduled to begin about 10 minutes before the first launch.

SubTEC-9 Sounding Rocket Launch

NASA's Wallops Flight Facility is scheduled to launch a sounding rocket for the Suborbital Technology Experiment Carrier (SubTEC-9) mission Monday, April 24. The mission will test several new technologies under development by the Sounding Rockets Program Office (SRPO).

The launch window for the mission is 7:15-8:15 p.m. EDT. The Wallops Visitor Center’s launch viewing area will open at 6:15 p.m. for launch viewing. Coverage of the mission will begin 15 minutes before the scheduled launch time.

RockOn/RockSat-C Sounding Rocket Launches

The launch window for the mission is 6-10 a.m. EDT. The Wallops Visitor Center’s launch viewing area will open at 5 a.m. for launch viewing. Coverage of the mission will begin 15 minutes before the scheduled launch time.

The liftoff of the Terrier-Improved Malemute carrying the RockSat-X payloads took place at 10:21:00 UTC. However the launch resulted in a failure because of some anomaly related to the launch vehicle, according to the webcast contact with the vehicle was lost 41 seconds after liftoff. Because of this the second scheduled launch has been indefinitely postponed.

EDIT: the root of the failure has been found in the second stage, therefore the RockOn launch has been rescheduled for today with the same launch window since it uses a sounding rocket with a different second stage (Terrier-Improved Orion)

Wallops Island Launch Facility - 1965, Arcas , Scout, Launch Control, Telemetry, Remastered, NASA

Restored NASA documentary from 1965 about Wallops Island Launch Facility activities. Wallops history since the 1950s is mentioned, with interviews with staff. Arcas and Scout rocket assembly are shown, and the experiments carried out in space are described. Base operations related to rocket launches are covered, with command and telemetry consoles shown in detail.

The original was an old TV program recorded by a camera pointing at a CRT screen. Distortions introduced by this process (vignetting, bad geometry, luminosity) were corrected as best as possible.

AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample and clean up the video to HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts may be present in some sequences.  If you prefer to view the original low-resolution footage reduce quality to 480p.

Sound and image cleanup, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD. Some music segments might be replaced by background sounds or generic themes.
