Blackstar,
You have to read Project Mars, A Technical Tale by von Braun.  Basically a novelized version of Das Mars Projekt.

Strongly agree you should read Bova's Mars trilogy and the Red Mars trilogy.

I've skimmed it. I'm actually quite familiar with some of this literature. I was looking for a good list just so that I can be accurate in an article where I refer to the large body of literature.

I personally thought "Mars", by Ben Bova was fun.

I read it and the sequel (were there two? I may have read all of them).

I enjoyed it at the time, but later read a review that pointed out how cliched some of it was.

Although better known for Carrying the Fire, Mike Collins, Apollo 11 CMP wrote a book about a joint US-Russian mission.

Another book that I would consider a must is Voyage by Baxter - an alternate history showing how Apollo would have gone to Mars.  My favorite of all the other ones mentioned.

Total Recall is imo the best Mars movie ever made.

Did you know that the remake does not take place on Mars?

I had no idea.  I'll look into it, likely watch it, and probably enjoy it.  But I can't see how any remake of Total Recall could improve on the original, so I already had low expectations.

It's not out yet.

I don't think anybody has high expectations for it.

The Martian Chronicles comes to mind.  There was OJ Simpson's movie about a faked Mars mission (I don't remember the name).

It's been greater than 15 years since I read it.  I didn't realize there were sequels to that book.

There is the Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars trilogy.

One more, what may have been the last Lovellian Mars novel before Mariner IV.

James Blish, Welcome to Mars.

As far as I can tell it's also the only novel where NASA goes to Mars before they go to the Moon.

Footnote: researching about "Mission to Mars" and "Red Planet" origins, I've discovered that there was a third Mars movie planned for 2001, which unfortunately aborted.
Guess what ? post Titanic, the very megalomaniac James Cameron bought the right of the Mars trilogy.
IMHO it would have made for a much better scenario than silly Avatar.

Ludek Pesek, The Earth is Near

That's a really good one! It is a rare book now. Ludek Pesek was a fantastic artist. I think he wrote and illustrated one about a lunar expedition, too. I'll have to comb through my hundreds of Space books to see if I've got it. I have to echo someone mentioning 'Voyage' by Stephen Baxter - its one of the few books where I wept reading it's ending.

'Mars' by Ben Bova is a real classic that mostly gets better with age.

Throne of Saturn by Allen Drury, not so great, but not bad either.
Voyage is without a doubt my favorite, followed by Bova's Mars Trilogy and Benfords the Martian Race.

Race to Mars is a fairly good movie, as its accompanying factual counterpart Mars Rising.

Who of course can forget Robinson Crusoe on Mars?

Mission to Mars is pretty forgetable, except for the hardware.

I had to find my copy through a library, interesting thing is, besides the stricking picture on the over, "The Earth is Near" is unillustrated.
