[EN] ✍️ Diary of an astronaut - space rescue ⛑️
The last dive photos I shared may seem like an invitation to relax—especially with the perfect soundtrack from Jacques Brel or Hooverphonic 🎶—but in reality these dives are intense and packed with a long list of exercises (they usually last about six o'clock!).
One of the most important tasks is to rescue a crew member who, for whatever reason, can no longer return to the airlock independently—we call this an "incapacitated crew rescue" (ICR).
On our last dive we did this exercise with Sophie, and the video shows the beginning of my ICR, securing Sophie before returning her to the airlock. The good news? We both got out safely 🙂.
See you soon 😉

NASA's astronaut selection began this March, and the upcoming schedule was recently announced. Among those who passed in the past, there are some who have attempted the selection more than ten times. We are looking forward to the results in June 2025.
● October to December 2024: Initial interviews, inspections and testing at Johnson Space Center
● January 2025: Finalists selected
● January to April 2025: Additional interviews and testing for finalists at Johnson Space Center
● June 2025: Announcement of astronaut candidates
● August 2025: Candidates gather at Johnson Space Center

Among the selection activities, the cultural fit assessment particularly caught my attention. These evaluations aim to determine how well candidates align with the values and mission of the space agency. For example, questions like "Describe a time when you had to make a difficult ethical decision," "How do you prioritize teamwork in your work?" and "Can you discuss a time you worked with a diverse team?" are designed to gain insights into candidates' values and collaborative skills.

What do Astronauts do between missions? Here is 48 hrs for Raja.
Raja Chari
@Astro_Raja
When people ask @NASA_Astronauts why we love our jobs, going to space & @Space_Station is 1 reason…but another reason is the variety of things we see in our daily training to further the multiple human spaceflight efforts we are testing as @NASAArtemis pushes beyond low earth orbit. In one 48 hr period I was blessed to be able to fly a T-38 with a crewmate to work on our resource management/comm, test procedures for @NASA_Orion proximity ops for #Artemis2, prep for an @Axiom_Space pressurized lunar spacesuit test, work the night shift assisting doctors/nurses @memorialhermann ER, test a @blueorigin lunar landing simulator, and watch @SpaceX catch the first stage so we can eventually progress to on-orbit propellant transfer to get @NASA to the moon. Apollo was awesome but NEVER in the history of human spaceflight have we been doing so much testing across so many vehicles.

{Houston 🇺🇸} Training Weeks 19-20
📚 Woohoo, the evaluations went very well and since then, I also had many classes on the ISS systems…
🤿 … and the 5th NBL EVA training with the pressurised spacesuit.
📷 Here are some pics of the most unconventional classes of these past 2 weeks…
Just a precision: not all classes are such fun, many are spent in front of a computer!!!!
- 🎥 Photo/videos classes, including with the EVA camera.
- 💉 Medical skills classes: measuring vitals (blood pressure, heart rate, O2 saturation, etc.), starting an intravenous, checking an eardrum, etc. Basic medical skills we will need in case of a problem onboard the ISS.
- 💨 CO2 exposure: pilots train to detect hypoxia (lower O2), astronauts also train to detect for higher CO2 levels. It is important to know the first symptoms in case it happens in the suit or onboard the station. There was an awesome team of flight surgeons with me that day!
Many thanks to all the teams who make this journey so fascinating! 🙏

ASCAN training typically lasts about two years, After graduation, they become active astronauts, but flight assignments might take additional time based on mission needs.

October 22, 2024 (Reiwa 6)
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been conducting astronaut candidate basic training for astronaut candidate Ayu Yoneda from April 2023 and for astronaut Osamu Suwa from July 2023. The two astronaut candidates have completed all basic training items for various missions, including activities on the International Space Station (ISS), the lunar orbiting manned base "Gateway", and lunar surface activities. After being examined by the examination committee, he was certified as an astronaut on October 21, 2024.
From now on, I will be based at NASA Johnson Space Center and will participate in training held in various countries including Japan in order to improve my knowledge and skills as an astronaut.
(Reference)
●Basic training is conducted by the candidate's home country for the purpose of acquiring the basic knowledge and skills required as an astronaut. Basic training will be conducted based on training requirements agreed upon by the space agencies of the ISS participating countries (Japan, the United States, Canada, European countries, and Russia).
● Basic training is broadly divided into the following four areas.
(1) Training to acquire knowledge (introduction) about engineering and the outline of spacecraft necessary for astronauts (2) Training to acquire science-related knowledge necessary for various space experiments conducted in orbit (3) ) Training to acquire an overview of the systems of the ISS/Kibo Japanese Experiment Module (4) Aim to acquire, maintain and improve the skills necessary for astronauts (general survival skills, airplane operation, swimming ability, language skills, physical strength, etc.) Basic ability training

Conquering peaks and practicing evacuation skills: the astronauts underwent mountain training
| Cosmonaut training
October 23, 2024
For several days, Anna Kikina, Pyotr Dubrov, Sergei Prokopyev, Oleg Artemyev, under the guidance of specialists from the extreme sports training department of the Center, a therapist and a psychologist at the Center, practiced the skills of safe stay, movement in the mountains, evacuation and, if necessary, providing medical assistance to the victims. The training took place in the area of the village of Agoy, Tuapse district, Krasnodar Territory, with the active participation of mountain training instructors from the PSO Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, which is based in Tuapse.
Astronauts need training in the mountains in case of an emergency landing. Such an event occurred on April 5, 1975, when cosmonauts Vasily Lazarev and Oleg Makarov found themselves in the Altai mountains due to an accident during the launch of a Soyuz launch vehicle. Therefore, current crews are required to practice actions in case the descent vehicle lands in mountainous terrain.
The astronauts are given theoretical and practical lessons on the types of reliefs in the mountains, taught to recognize them, and practice the rules of behavior and movement as part of a separate group. Astronauts must be able to assess the situation at the landing site of the descent vehicle in order to decide whether to stay near it or move to a safe place. They also train the skill of organizing everyday life before the search and rescue forces arrive, for example, setting up a camp.
“First theoretically, and then in practice, we practice with the cosmonauts the use of equipment or equipment that is on board the spacecraft: this is a portable emergency reserve (NAS), and parachutes, and slings, and “hero” fabric, etc. - everything that is available. How can you use available materials, for example, to evacuate a victim or to make simple elements of climbing equipment? We try to place emphasis on practical exercises and training. This is a rather complex type of training, and it is definitely necessary to refresh your memory skills,” said Alexander German, deputy head of the department of the training center.
For Anna Kikina, this was her second mountain training since joining the squad. The cosmonaut noted the density and richness of the program of events: studying climbing equipment and practical exercises with it in the hangar, practicing techniques in the rocks.
“On the third day the hike took place: in six and a half hours we covered 13 kilometers. The terrain was changing all the time: flat, sloping, rocks, rubble, and kurumnik. We also encountered water obstacles: we walked along a river bed and passed waterfalls. We used ropes for ascents and descents. At the highest point, various methods of transporting the “victims” were worked out, and drags were made for this. It is important to note that we were given a real educational route: local instructors told us about the history of the region, plants and insects, and also showed us 5 dolmens!
During training there was an overnight stay in a grotto. We were on duty: we took turns maintaining the fire and at the beginning of every hour we contacted a group of rescuers who, according to legend, knew about the location of our crew, but could only evacuate the next day, and we had to hold out until that time.
For me, the most interesting experience was the use of the parachute lines of the descent vehicle, and one of the two rings on the Falcon spacesuit, which can be removed and used instead of a carabiner for the descent device. We can use these elements as a harness around the body such as safety belts, ropes, carabiners.
In general, the mountain training was intense, varied and effective in terms of the use of certain techniques that would be available in the event of an emergency landing,” Anna Kikina shared her impressions.
