Wallops Flight Facility: "This Island Called Wallops" 1965 NASA

Jeff Quitney

Published on Sep 19, 2016

"This film provides an overview of activities on Wallops Island, where the Wallops Flight Facility -- one of the oldest launch sites in the world -- tracking stations, long-range radar, and data processing capabilities made it a center for the support of space science research and development into orbital and sub-orbital payloads."

NASA film HQ-137

Sorry the quality of the original film to video transfer on this one is low, but few people know much about this substantial NASA facility.

Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) (IATA: WAL, ICAO: KWAL), located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, is operated by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, primarily as a rocket launch site to support science and exploration missions for NASA and other U.S. government agencies. WFF includes an extensively instrumented range to support launches of more than a dozen types of sounding rockets, small expendable suborbital and orbital rockets, high altitude balloon flights carrying scientific instruments for atmospheric and astronomical research and—using its Research Airport—flight tests of aeronautical research aircraft including unmanned aerial vehicles. There have been over 16,000 launches from the range at Wallops since its founding in 1945.

The WFF range supports science missions for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and occasionally for foreign governments and commercial organizations... In addition to its fixed-location instrumentation assets, the WFF range includes mobile radars, telemetry receivers, and command transmitters... The WFF mobile range assets have been used to support rocket launches from locations in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, South America, Africa, Europe, Australia and at sea. Workers at Wallops include approximately 1,000 full-time NASA civil service employees and contractors, 30 U.S. Navy personnel, and 100 NOAA employees.

History

In 1945, NASA's predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), established a rocket launch site on Wallops Island under the direction of the Langley Research Center. This site was designated the Pilotless Aircraft Research Station and conducted high-speed aerodynamic research... In 1958, Congress established NASA, which absorbed Langley Research Center and other NACA field centers and research facilities. At that time, the Pilotless Aircraft Research Station became a separate facility - Wallops Station - operating directly under NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C... In 1974, the Wallops Station was named Wallops Flight Center. The name was changed to Wallops Flight Facility in 1981, when it became part of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

In the early years, research at Wallops concentrated on obtaining aerodynamic data at transonic and low supersonic speeds. Between 1959 and 1961, Project Mercury capsules were tested at Wallops in support of NASA's manned space flight program before astronauts were launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Some of these tests using the Little Joe booster rocket were designed to flight-qualify components of the Mercury spacecraft, including the escape and recovery systems and some of the life support systems. Two rhesus monkeys, Sam and Miss Sam, were sent aloft as pioneers for astronauts; both were recovered safely.

Since 1945, the Wallops Test Range has launched more than 14,000 research vehicles in the quest for information on the flight characteristics of airplanes, launch vehicles, and spacecraft; and to increase the knowledge of the Earth's upper atmosphere and the near-space environment. The launch vehicles vary in size and power from the small Super Loki meteorological rockets to orbital-class vehicles...

Since 2001, engineers at NASA Wallops Flight Facility have been developing new range technologies, systems and approaches to improve the cost and responsiveness of launch and flight test activities, within the constraints of available funding and program schedules.

Specifically, NASA Wallops has been leading two range technology development projects: the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) and the Low Cost TDRSS Transceiver (LCT2)...

Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound.

Public domain film from NASA, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Student Experiments Launched to Space on a NASA Suborbital Rocket

Approximately 60 university student experiments were successfully launched Friday, June 24, 2022, aboard a NASA suborbital sounding rocket from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The sounding rocket lifted off at 5:35 a.m. EDT. The mission is part of the RockOn! and RockSat-C programs designed for students to learn and apply skills in building experiments for suborbital space flight. About 140 students in the programs were at Wallops to view the launch.

Conducted with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia, RockOn! is in its fourteenth year and RockSat-C its thirteenth year.

The 39-foot (11.9 m) tall rocket carried 39 experiments from the RockOn program and seven experiments in the RockSat-C program. Also, approximately 80 small cubes with experiments developed by middle- and high-school students were flown as part of the Cubes in Space program, a partnership between idoodlelearning inc., Wallops and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium.

Launched aboard a two-stage Terrier-Improved Orion rocket, the student experiments flew to an altitude of nearly 70.5 miles (113.5 km). After descending by parachute and landing in the Atlantic Ocean, the experiments were recovered. The experiments will arrive back at Wallops later in the day and returned to the students to see how their experiments performed.

The next launch from Wallops is RockSat-X on a Terrier-Improved Malemute scheuled for the morning of August 9, 2022. RockSat-X is the upper level of the three-tier student program, with experiments developed that are more complex than those in RockOn and RockSat-C.

RockOn/RockSat-C Sounding Rocket Launches

Quote
Scheduled for Aug 16, 2023
NASA's Wallops Flight Facility is scheduled to launch two sounding rockets for the RockSat-X and RockOn/RockSat-C missions Wednesday, Aug. 16. The rockets will carry multiple student experiments to suborbital space.

The launch window for the mission is 6-10 a.m. EDT. The Wallops Visitor Center’s launch viewing area will open at 5 a.m. for launch viewing. Coverage of the mission will begin 15 minutes before the scheduled launch time.

The liftoff of the Terrier-Improved Malemute carrying the RockSat-X payloads took place at 10:21:00 UTC. However the launch resulted in a failure because of some anomaly related to the launch vehicle, according to the webcast contact with the vehicle was lost 41 seconds after liftoff. Because of this the second scheduled launch has been indefinitely postponed.

EDIT: the root of the failure has been found in the second stage, therefore the RockOn launch has been rescheduled for today with the same launch window since it uses a sounding rocket with a different second stage (Terrier-Improved Orion)

Wallops Island Launch Facility - 1965, Arcas , Scout, Launch Control, Telemetry, Remastered, NASA

Quote
Apr 24, 2025
Restored NASA documentary from 1965 about Wallops Island Launch Facility activities. Wallops history since the 1950s is mentioned, with interviews with staff. Arcas and Scout rocket assembly are shown, and the experiments carried out in space are described. Base operations related to rocket launches are covered, with command and telemetry consoles shown in detail.

The original was an old TV program recorded by a camera pointing at a CRT screen. Distortions introduced by this process (vignetting, bad geometry, luminosity) were corrected as best as possible.

AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample and clean up the video to HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts may be present in some sequences.  If you prefer to view the original low-resolution footage reduce quality to 480p.

Sound and image cleanup, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD. Some music segments might be replaced by background sounds or generic themes.

Unfortunately, when you download the document now all it says is

NGA rocket launching notices for a rocket launch(es) from Wallops on the 18th. Zones are very different than the HASTE launch; this is unrelated. There were several LNMs posted for this launch several days ago that I'll also include. Each LNM contains a different zone, and all are fairly close to shore.

Do we think this is another HASTE attempt?

A new NOTAM names this launch on the 18th as "RACHEL 4"

I would say that it's unlikely. The LNMs for this 18th launch started to get posted on the 7th, a full week before the "JAKE 4" HASTE vehicle stood down from its launch campaign. The hazard zones are also very different, with the launch on the 18th featuring zones that don't extend anywhere near as far as the JAKE 4 HASTE zones, and are shaped very differently.

On the other hand, it is strange that a "RACHEL 4" launch was scheduled only a few days after the "JAKE 4" HASTE launch was scheduled, with how similar the names are. The 2345 - 0500 UTC launch window is also the same, although that may be a preference by the range itself.

Here's a new NASA Wallops range blog acknowledging an upcoming launch:

Quote from: NASA WFF
NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is supporting sounding rocket launch operations during a window extending from July 17-31, 2025.

No real-time launch status updates will be available. The launch will not be livestreamed.
https://www.nasa.gov/blogs/wallops/2025/07/16/nasa-wallops-to-support-july-launch-operations/

Wording specifies that the operations will be for a sounding rocket. For reference, the blog post for the "JAKE 4" HASTE launch referred to that launch as a suborbital rocket.

"The launch" seems to specify that this blog post is for only one of the two upcoming missions we have NOTAMs for: "RACHEL 4" on the 18th and "MUFFIN" on the 25th. Both fall within the 17th to 31st date range given by the post.

NGA rocket launching notices for a rocket launch(es) from Wallops on the 18th. Zones are very different than the HASTE launch; this is unrelated.

And here's an amateur stream that showed two rockets launching last night, the 18th. According to the stream, one was launched at 8:04 PM local (0004Z) and the other at 8:47 PM local (0047Z).

A new NGA notice was sent last night, canceling the above NAVAREA IV 729/25 and replacing it with another notice starting on the 23rd instead. A new NOTAM was also later posted naming this launch on the 23rd as RACHEL 4, so it seems the two rockets launched on the 18th, which also had NOTAMs calling them RACHEL 4, weren't the full batch (maybe another two on the 23rd for a total of 4?)

Yet another rocket launch on the manifest for Wallops, this one apparently termed "MUFFIN ROCKET LAUNCH" for some odd reason. Launch window opens on July 25th, with a daily window of 2145-0415 UTC.

Two newly released NGA rocket launching notices for this "Muffin" rocket launch on the 25th:

Wallops Launch Schedule lists more unrelated sounding rocket launch(es) on the 17th. HASTE will probably need to wait until after.

Quote from: Wallops Launch Schedule - NASA
Mission: Turbulent Oxygen Mixing Experiment Plus (TOMEX+)
Vehicle: Three sounding rockets- two Terrier-Improved Orion rockets and one Black Brant IX
Date No Earlier than Aug. 17, 2025
Time: Night
Location: Wallops Island, Virginia
The visitor center will not be open for this launch and there will be no live stream. Mission updates will be provided on the NASA Wallops Facebook and X pages.

NGA rocket launching notice for that launch.

The TOMEX+ sounding rocket mission is now targeting no earlier than Sunday, Aug. 24, for the first launch attempt due to high sea states in the recovery area from Hurricane Erin.

It's night three for TOMEX+!

The window for tonight's launch attempt, Aug. 27, opens at 10:30 p.m. EDT and runs through 3:30 a.m. Launch window means we can launch any time within that timeframe.

Right now, our biggest concern for launch is clouds in the area. Stay tuned for updates!

Logistics Watch — NASA Wallops / Rocket Lab Neutron

We’ve been tracking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredger MURDEN as it makes its way up the Virginia Eastern Shore this morning. If it turns toward Sloop Gut near Wallops, that could point to maintenance dredging—exactly the kind of prep that makes barge access easier for moving larger Neutron hardware. For the ship-spotters: MURDEN is a US-flag, shallow-draft split-hull hopper dredger (Wilmington District), built in 2012; MMSI 369970571, call sign AELE. Based on its current pace, arrival in the Wallops area could be in the 5–6 hour window—if that’s the destination. This is informed speculation for now, but the puzzle pieces fit. We’ll keep eyes on the track and post photos/video if it ties up near the inlet.

Sounding Rocket Launch Window Update — Wallops Island

Looks like we may have a sounding rocket launch from Wallops in the next few days. The original window showed Dec 2, but it now appears to be pushed to Dec 3, with the window opening at 5:15 AM EST (12:15 UTC) and backups running through Dec 9.

These launches are usually small solid-fuel rockets, but they’re still fun to watch — if you’re awake that early.
No mission details released yet, but we’ll keep an eye out.

The sounding rocket launched at 11:30 a.m. from Wallops. Unfortunately, I was working from home and didn't get a chance to catch the launch since there were no streaming or updates about it. I love hearing any kind of rocket launching from Wallops.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 3, 2025

• LP-0A (Firefly / Antares): No workers seen today. The boom lift that was positioned in the back is now lowered and gone.
• LC-2 (Electron): Quiet on-site, but we now have a local mariner’s notice confirming a launch window opening Dec 18 at 7:45 PM. Night launches from Wallops are the best.
• LC-3 (Neutron): Workers spotted going in and out of the umbilical areas and moving around the center of the pad.
• Caught some video — and at around the 30-second mark, there’s another friendly wave from a fan working out there.
• As always, Wallops stays active, and I’m looking forward to the updates and launches ahead.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 4, 2025

• LP-0A (Firefly/Antares): Workers on-site today. The truck logo suggests they were inspecting the water deluge/sound suppression system.
• LC-2 (Electron): Still quiet. Waiting on the official announcement for the next Electron launch — currently set for Dec 18, window opens 7:45 PM.
• LC-3 (Neutron): Lots of activity — many hardhats moving around the base of the stand.
• Saw crews lifting tools and hardware, and it looked like an arc welder was lifted onto the pad.
• Grabbed video of one lift and photos of another.
• Noticed an additional boom lift on-site — larger than the others we’ve seen. Could be the one that entered through the AIC gate last night.
• Plenty of action at the Neutron pad today.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 5, 2025

Cold day out here — woke up to everything covered in snow on the Eastern Shore. By noon it had all melted into a cloudy, wet afternoon, so activity across Wallops was pretty light.

• LP-0A (Firefly/Antares): The watertight-testing truck from yesterday is gone. Pad is quiet.
• LC-2 (Electron): The transport erector is vertical again, likely doing post-launch checks or testing. Fingers crossed for the next Electron flight on Dec 18 (7:45 PM).
• LC-3 (Neutron): Not as busy as yesterday, but the crane on the right is still up (not fully lowered). Hardware on top of the stand is still in place.
• Saw one or two trucks move through, but not many workers — understandable given the cold, wet conditions.

Wallops Island Update — Evening of Dec 9, 2025

Lots of activity at Wallops today as they prep to receive the Stage 2 testing stand at LC-3.

• Crews were out at the pad making adjustments.
• The crane is up, staged, and ready for assembly.
• Spotted crane parts being hauled across the causeway earlier in the day.
• As the sun set, the last of the crane hardware was delivered to LC-3 — the site was buzzing.
• Curious if they’ll build the crane tonight so it’s ready by morning.

Hoping tomorrow we either see the stand cross the causeway, or—if we miss that moment—find it already positioned at LC-3. We’ll be checking multiple times throughout the day.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 11, 2025

• The Second Stage test stand is now sitting out front at the Neutron launch complex (LC-3).
• The crane is fully built, and it even has an extra section we didn’t see at the AIC.
• The stand is fully strapped and rigged, ready for the lift.
• Very breezy today, so not sure whether the lift happens today or tomorrow — but they look ready either way.

• LC-2 (Electron): The transport erector is vertical, likely doing checks ahead of rolling out the next Electron.
If the schedule holds, the rocket should come out tomorrow or over the weekend for integration.
Launch still targeted for midnight on Dec 18, window open until 4 AM, with backups through the 23rd (same times).

• LP-0A (Firefly/Antares): No visible activity today.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 13, 2025

• Pulled into the viewing spot just as the Rocket Lab Electron was being erected — an awesome sight.
• A fully vertical Electron now stands at LC-2.
• Over at LC-3 (Neutron), the Second Stage test stand is in place on the pad.
• The crane is still up, which makes me wonder if they’re still fitting the stand or planning to install something inside it before taking the crane down.
• Either way, things are clearly ramping up across Wallops.

Looking ahead to the Electron launch this week — the window opens Dec 18 at midnight, and I think Rocket Lab is going to stream the launch. Even with a late-night liftoff, this one’s going to be exciting.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 15, 2025

• When I arrived, I was surprised to see the Electron rocket still vertical at LC-2.
• Normally it’s lowered after day one and raised again on launch day, but it looks like they’re doing cryo testing ahead of the midnight launch on Dec 18.
• It was pretty cool to catch a frosty Electron without it being launch day.

• LC-3 (Neutron): The crane is still on-site, though some sections have been taken down. The Second Stage test stand remains secured and looks solid.
• Activity here is lighter at the moment.
• LP-0A (Antares / Firefly): No visible activity today.

A quieter check-in, but still some interesting prep underway.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 20, 2025

• Yesterday’s rain and wind were pretty intense, so I did a follow-up check today.
• It’s quiet across the pads — and it is a Saturday.
• LP-0A (Antares / Firefly): no visible activity.
• LC-2 (Electron): also quiet from what we can see.
• LC-3 (Neutron): no workers visible on the stand, but two cranes are up (not extended).

• Important reminder: the trees and brush in front of LC-3 hide a lot of ground-level work — just because we don’t see it on the stand doesn’t mean nothing’s happening. That area was very busy during the recent Electron launch.

• Swung by the AIC as well — the blue transport trailer is still there, but the truck that pulls it is gone.

Even with the holidays coming up, I’ll keep checking in from time to time to see what changes.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Dec 22, 2025

• LP-0A (Antares / Firefly): Very quiet today — not much visible work.
• LC-2 (Electron): Also quiet from what we can see.
• LC-3 (Neutron): Some solid activity despite the holidays.
• A boom lift was raised nearly to the top of the Second Stage test stand, with workers moving around the structure.
• Another boom lift was up on the right side near the light poles — possibly installing cameras or additional lighting.
• Even this close to the holidays, Rocket Lab isn’t slowing down.
• Caught a short video clip of the work at the Neutron pad.

Throughout 2025, Wallops played a key role in enabling national security missions at our launch range for commercial partners and other government agencies, such as Rocket Lab’s HASTE vehicle used for hypersonic test flights.

In 2026, we are looking forward to strengthening these partnerships and continuing to play our role in advancing national security.

NASA Wallops Island Update — December 31, 2025

Happy New Year’s Eve! This will be my last Wallops update for 2025.

As expected during the holidays, everything has been very quiet out at Wallops Island over the past week and a half. I did take a moment to snap a few photos of the launch pads and the causeway — a calm, peaceful way to wrap up the year.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year, and I’m really looking forward to seeing activity pick back up in Q1 of 2026. There’s a lot to be excited about heading into the new year.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Jan 2, 2026

• Another quiet day at Wallops to start the new year.
• No visible activity at LP-0A, LC-2, or LC-3 during today’s check.
• Didn’t spot any workers out at the pads, and traffic to and from the island was light.
• That said, this lull likely won’t last long — especially with hardware recently spotted up in Middle River, Maryland.

For now, Wallops is taking a breath… but things are getting lined up.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Jan 8, 2026

Nice day overall, though clouds rolled in and stole the sun this afternoon.

• The island was buzzing with activity, especially construction noise from work on the new causeway leading to the pads.
• LP-0A (Firefly/Antares): Pad modifications and upgrades continue.
• LC-2 (Electron): The transport erector is down, but still visible at the pad.
• LC-3 (Neutron): Work continues — spotted technicians on top of the Second Stage test stand and on the pad itself.
• Also noted: the crane that had been parked in front of LC-3 has been moved.

Wallops Island Launch Advisory — February Window

A new Local Notice to Mariners (LNM) has been posted for a rocket launch out of NASA Wallops Island.

The notice lists the following launch windows:

Primary Launch Window:
• February 18 — 3:00 PM to 6:45 PM EST (20:00–23:45 UTC)

Backup Windows:
• February 19–24, same daily time window

At this point, there’s no indication of an Electron or HASTE launch tied to this notice. Based on how the hazard areas and wording are structured, this looks like a NASA Wallops–controlled launch, which often points toward a sounding rocket mission.

That said, we’ll continue monitoring NOTAMs, TFRs, and additional LNMs to see if anything changes or expands.

NASA Wallops Island Update — Feb 4, 2026

Cloudy, gloomy day out at Wallops, but after all the cold and wind lately, it’s good to finally see some movement again.

• LP-0A (Firefly/Antares): No workers spotted, but heavy boom forklifts are staged at the pad.
• LC-2 (Electron): The transport erector is down, with no visible activity during this check.
• LC-3 (Neutron): Some solid activity today — a blue lift extended to the top of the pad, and it looks like a ladder is now sitting on the bottom level of the Second Stage test stand.

Nice to finally see visible progress again after the stretch of harsh winter weather.
