Anik, was wondering... are the rendezvous milestones much different for the unmanned Progress and the manned Soyuz spacecraft for the standard 2 day rendezvous?

When the decision is made, will Soyuz match the maneuvers that Progress now uses for the 4 orbit rendezvous?

Thank you.

No, they have similar maneuvers.

What surprised me is the 10 hours wearing the Sokols sitting in the Kazbek couches - is that really better than two days in the cramped SA/BO? Their knees will be on fire after 10 hours in that position. Then there's lactic acid build-up - not good. So I can certainly understand NASA's "let's wait and see" attitude to approving fast rendezvous for future Soyuzes.

What also surprised me is that the BO won't actually be ingressed during the fast rendezvous. And seems as it is shut up prior to undocking, that means the BO on Soyuz TMA-08M won't actually be used at all - which begs the question, if fast rendezvous does become permanent, could the BO be done away with altogether, and replaced with a docking probe/ring adapter that sits atop the SA?

It is already approved by Roskosmos for all subsequent Soyuz flights, so it does not really matter what NASA thinks about it.

that means the BO on Soyuz TMA-08M won't actually be used at all

It means that you do not know that BO is actually using for delivery of cargoes to ISS and removal of garbage from ISS.

So it was a unilateral decision, with no discussion with the paying customer (NASA)? If for example Cassidy told NASA "that experience was awful, I don't want to do that again", then I think they would have something to say about it.

It means that you do not know that BO is actually using for delivery of cargoes to ISS and removal of garbage from ISS.

Yes, of course there is cargo, but things like the toilet, etc. could be removed to make space for more cargo. However, it's all moot anyway, because full BO capability would need to be retained in the event that the 6 hour rendezvous is aborted in favour of the usual two day approach.

We can listen NASA's points of view but the final decision will be made by Roskosmos. It is not the Space Shuttle, it is the Russian spacecraft. The decision is already made by Roskosmos. And, I am sorry, what does NASA pay for? I thought that NASA pays for delivery of their astronauts to ISS by Soyuz. I thought that there was not agreement about how quickly NASA astronauts will be delivered to ISS.

If for example Cassidy told NASA "that experience was awful, I don't want to do that again", then I think they would have something to say about it

He can wait for US manned spacecrafts to get to ISS. What is the problem? All cosmonauts tell that they can be tolerant to those six-hour difficulties for a quick delivery to ISS.

I don't think the complaint of an astronaut about his own comfort could change anything about the flight profile of all subsequent Soyuz flights.

If Russian cosmonauts had complained about their comfort in the US Space Shuttle, do you think that NASA would have changed its design ?  :)

I am pretty sure that the astronauts would prefer sitting in a sweat-soaked suit on an economy class seat for 10 hours than trapped in a car sized space for 2+ days anyway. After all, Borman and Lovell did that in a tin can for two weeks......  :P

So there were some comments on that within JSC / NASA's astronaut corps?

Does it really matter? "Eat what others give to you if you do not have your own food. Yes, you have paid for this food, but this kitchen belong to others. But if you do not want to eat this food you can wait for your food". The head of Roskosmos Vladimir Popovkin said to use quick-rendezvous profile for all Russian flights to ISS.

Imagine, two Chinese astronauts and one European astronaut aboard Shenzhou go to Chinese space station. European astronaut says: "Guys, ESA has paid for this flight much money, go and decrease speed of this spacecraft!" Chinese astronauts answer: "Hey, shut up! Or you will do spacewalk without spacesuit" :)

Note the quick rendezvous scenario does not require the crew to remain strapped in their seats for the 6 hours. Once in orbit, the crew is not constrained from floating around the descent module, which does have 4 cubic meters of volume. The DM is really cramped on earth, but in space, there is more available volume at the top of the cabin.

Also, I would imagine that the crew could unzip their spacesuits, remove the helmets, etc.

According to Chris Cassidy in my interview with him this morning:

"We wind up being in the vehicle for a very, very long time and people just need to use the toilet eventually," Cassidy told collectSPACE.com, "so we'll open the hatch and have access to the BO [Russian Cyrillic, pronounced "vae-oh" meaning orbital module] and be allowed to take our suits not completely off but enough to do any business we need to take care of and just stretch our legs."

MEDIA ADVISORY: M13-052

NEW SPACE STATION CREW MEMBERS TO LAUNCH AND DOCK THE SAME DAY

HOUSTON -- Three new crew members are set to launch to the
International Space Station on a six-hour flight to travel from the
launch pad to their destination.

Chris Cassidy of NASA, along with Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander
Misurkin of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), are
scheduled to launch in their Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur
Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 3:43 p.m. CDT, Thursday, March 28, (2:43
a.m. March 29 Baikonur time). Live coverage on NASA Television begins
at  2:30 p.m.

Cassidy, Vinogradov and Misurkin will become the first station crew
members to make an expedited trip to the orbiting laboratory. Instead
of taking the standard two days to rendezvous and dock with the
station, they will need only four orbits of Earth to reach the
station. This flight will employ rendezvous techniques used recently
with three unpiloted Russian Progress cargo spacecraft.

The crew will dock with the station's Poisk module at 9:32 p.m., with
NASA TV coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. Hatches are scheduled to open
between the Soyuz and station at 11:10 p.m., with NASA TV coverage
beginning at 10:30 p.m.

Cassidy, Vinogradov and Misurkin will join Chris Hadfield of the
Canadian Space Agency, Tom Marshburn of NASA and Roman Romanenko of
Roscosmos, who have been aboard the outpost since December 2012.

NASA TV also will provide extensive coverage of activities from March
21-27 leading up to the flight. All times are Central:

Cassidy says the extra-long Sokol suit wearing is OK because you can 'partially' get out of it to pee if you have to. I'd never heard of this option before, all previous accounts said the crew wears diapers. Is there really a zipper, or is Cassidy misinformed and in for a BIG surprise?

Yes, there is a zipper.
I can also confirm that there is a zipper and that they where a diaper, but they typically can only do so during travel period to pad. While at pad there is an enclosed facility where they can also use the bathroom for the final time before entering the service tower for rocket boarding. After that it is up to their diapers to handle such needs. Think back to Mercury program and their limited options. Females however typically do not have the same luxury of their male counterparts to make a request for stopping beside the road so that they can relieve themselves. After females depart for the pad they must wait until reaching the pad's facilities to relieve themselves. I do not know of a restroom on board their crew transport vehicle, but I know that females and males mainly sit in different areas via some video footage I still have that dates back to 1997. It might have changed since then, but I have not seen any evidence of such changes.

...Females however typically do not have the same luxury of their male counterparts to make a request for stopping beside the road ...

I was assured by one NASA female Soyuz crewmember that for ceremonial purposes they are expected to bring a small vial, to splash on the tire. The first male Soyuz crewman who did NOT do this, I am told, was Norm Thagard, who reported being afraid of telephoto lenses -- and as a result, his tour aboard Mir was a depressing one.

Thanks, but my puzzlement remains -- I've seen the Sokol-donning demonstrations from ISS and cannot detect any crotch opening in the undergarments or in the suit beneath the 'appendix' bladder. I guess I will have to look harder.

Sorry I'm only now reviewing the early pages. They are still constrained by their air hose [and cooling] attachments but presumably could unhook for brief periods. The helmets do not detach, but the visors fold way back.

So I can certainly understand NASA's "let's wait and see" attitude to approving fast rendezvous for future Soyuzes

It is already approved by Roskosmos for all subsequent Soyuz flights, so it does not really matter what NASA thinks about it.

Yurchikhin told us he WANTS to do it on his flight but it will NOT be approved until after THIS flight. That's what he said, I heard it.

For your understanding:

The first two Soyuz TMA-08M maneuvers will be on the first orbit, i.e. soon after separation from Soyuz-FG rocket's third stage. Therefore ballistic data for their performing will be loaded into onboard TsVM-101 computer by cosmonauts manually after ingress into spacecraft before launch.

On the second orbit another ballistic data will be transmitted from the ground. They will be automatically loaded into onboard TsVM-101 computer and used for a counting of the third, the fourth and subsequent six maneuvers, which should be performed before initiation of ISS fly-around.

I do know that it was used for Soyuz Ferry SC flights that had tight reserves and had to dock around a bit more than a day after launch.

Never. Most Salyut flights were flown with docking scheduled just over a day after launch (some were 2 days), and all Mir flights dock 2 days after launch. On the other hand the Americans had faster rendezvous times - the second and third Skylab flights dock 8 hours after launch. The record, however, went to the Gemini flights - Gemini 11 docked with its Agena test vehicle 93 minutes after launch! (a bit of a cheat though, since the GATV was launched less than 2 hours before the Gemini spacecraft)

Actually most of them were just over a day (~26 hours) - probably because the stations and Soyuz were at lower altitudes.

here's my story on how the ISS self-alignment opened the VERY narrow phase angle window, to make it possible.

You need to keep track of the source of the navigation data that drives the targeting calculations. The first rev burns are 'canned', computed based on the expected phase angle at insertion. After one pass across Russian tracking sites, actual achieved vehicle state is measured, and corrections to the canned burns are made -- still ground targeted.

On subsequent revs, relative navigation data become available -- Soyuz to ISS direct range/rate/angles -- and they allow more refined corrective burns, particularly for planar errors.

But the ultimate driver on rendezvous duration has always been how LARGE a phase angle window you want. One or two day periods allow a very large range of insertion lag distances -- up to half or more of any random orbit.  With higher targets [especially after ISS has gone higher after the end of shuttle missions] the differential altitude of chaser and target has increased, allowing higher overtake rates and hence a wider phase window.

Remember the "10:1" rule of thumb: two parallel satellites with average altitude difference of X will move relatively, along track,  a distance of 10X per rev.

The 6-hour rendezvous MUST have the target within a short orbital arc, a slot about 20 degrees long, slightly lower as procedures are sharpened, out of the possible 360 degrees. For any chance of having a series of every-other-day launch windows, it's the ISS that must move itself into the 'sweet slot'.

Probably a daft question, but my knowledge of orbital mechanics is only slightly better than my ability to read Proto-Elamite.  :)

Pete's awesome article, which will be updated throughout.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2013/03/soyuz-tma-08m-crew-iss-record-time/

One issue I was hoping the article would touch on (pardon me if it's been discussed elsewhere) is the risk of the fast-track rendezvous. From the article:

"Such a fast rendezvous was never attempted before as it requires extremely precise orbital adjustments from the ISS, and extremely precise orbital insertion by the Soyuz-FG booster, which was only deemed possible following a study conducted last year, which showed that such accuracy was achievable with the existing Soyuz-FG booster and modernised Soyuz TMA-M series spacecraft."

So if insertion is slightly off, or ISS doesn't hit the mark, is there any downside risk to having planned for fast-track rendezvous? Would they still have the ability to catch ISS during the normal two-day time frame? Or would they have to land?

There should be enough delta-v for the normal 2 day profile, unless the launch went very, very wrong.

Yes. If there is any problem, the spacecraft can switch to a normal (two days) rendezvous profile.

Here's the documentation on the 'small appendix' crotch opening:

SoyCOM: Скафандр “Сокол-КВ-2” (СКФ) (“Sokol-KB-2” spacesuit)
http://suzymchale.com/ruspace/sokol.html
There is a “big appendix” in the envelope (for the spacesuit donning) and a “small appendix” in the lower part (for urination). The “appendices” are made of rubberized cotton fabric and are pressurized by means of two rubber tight plaits…. In the “small appendix” area there is a physiological opening in the shell which is secured by lacing it up and covered by a fabric flap with velcro fastener.

We will clarify my NBC story:

I think you can -- check out my links. If you still can't, it's my fault, and I'll fix it.

By the way -- am I interpreting heavens-above correctly? The pre-launch ISS pass will not be visible [but the ISS crew should be able to see the Baykonur lights]. But the next two revs, with Soyuz in pursuit, WILL be sunlit, and visible at low elevation angles from the ground.

RELEASE: 13-089

NEW SPACE STATION RESIDENTS EN ROUTE TO ORBITING LABORATORY

HOUSTON -- Three new crew members are on an unprecedented fast track
to the International Space Station, going from the launch pad to the
orbiting complex in just six hours.

Chris Cassidy of NASA and Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin of
the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) launched in their Soyuz
spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 3:43 p.m.
CDT Thursday, March 28 (2:43 a.m. Baikonur time March 29).

Instead of taking the standard two days to rendezvous and dock with
the station, Cassidy, Vinogradov and Misurkin will become the first
crew to make the trip in just six hours. They will need only four
orbits of Earth to reach the orbiting laboratory. This flight will
use rendezvous techniques perfected recently with three unpiloted
Russian Progress resupply vehicles.

The crew will dock with the station's Poisk module at 9:32 p.m. CDT.
NASA TV coverage will begin at 8:30 p.m. CDT (9:30 p.m. EDT). Hatches
are scheduled to open between the Soyuz and the station at 11:10 p.m.
CDT with NASA TV coverage of the activities beginning at 10:30 p.m.
CDT (11:30 p.m. EDT).

Cassidy, Vinogradov and Misurkin will join Expedition 35 Commander
Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency, Tom Marshburn of NASA
and Roman Romanenko of Roscosmos. They have been aboard the complex
since December.

Expedition 35 will continue to expand the scope of research aboard the
station, seeking knowledge that strengthens our economy, improves
life on Earth and advances future exploration beyond Earth orbit.
During the next six months, the crew will perform more than 180
investigations covering human research, biological and physical
sciences, technology development, Earth observation and education.

In the launch video in #266, is that the moon visible above the rocket from about 0:42 to 0:57, or just an artifact in the video?

Edit:  I watched the launch live this afternoon while I was at work, and followed the commentary here.  Great coverage, everybody!

In the launch video in #266, is that the moon visible above the rocket from about 0:42 to 0:57, or just an artifact in the video?

It's a reflection of the engines off the camera's sensor, back to the lens rear element, and then back to the sensor or a reflection off a lens front element to a front filter and then back through the lens.

It's an artifact.

Congratulations on an impressive flight...

So the table for fast dockings  (Earth to Earth orbit target) is

Soyuz 7K-OK No. 7  0:46   (Kosmos-213)
Soyuz 7K-OK No. 5  1:17   (Kosmos-188)
Gemini 11             1:34:16
Gemini 12             3:46
Progress M-16M    5:43:30
Soyuz TMA-08M   5:44 ish?
Progress M-17M    5:52:22
Progress M-18M     5:52:31
Gemini 10              5:52:36
Gemini   8              6:33:16
Skylab SL-4          8:01
Skylab SL-3          8:21
Skylab SL-2          8:50  (soft dock)

I don't care that K-213 was the passive craft in the K-213/212 docking, under an hour is impressive any way you cut it.  Readers may be interested in Sven Grahn's discussion at

I'm not counting even more rapid 'dockings' such as that carried out by the F-15 ASAT with the P78-1 satellite :-). Also not counting Apollo transposition and
docking with no rendezvous required.

What have I missed?

Popovkin was asked if it's possible to get to ISS even faster. Popovkin responded "we need some time at least to deploy antenna and some other stuff" :) Flight surgeons are monitoring crew but it's likely that we stick with 4-orbit scheme for now. Also asked about Angara, told that they have tested it in "light" version (I think he meant South Korea's launch), but they want to test it in heavy configuration, and start phasing out Proton. Noted something about Zenit, but I didn't quite get what he meant...
Gerst was asked about when are they going to stop using Russian vehicles to get to ISS. He said that they plan at the end of 2017, also noted Orion test flight (uncrewed) to test reentry at about 80% of Lunar free-return speed.

Paolo Attivissimo wrote:
"Which spaceflight had the fastest liftoff-docking time? Not Soyuz

There's been considerable media interest in the Soyuz fast-track flight and its six hours from liftoff to docking at the ISS, so I did a little research into any records in this field.

The fastest liftoff-to-docking time belongs, as far as I know, to Gordon and Conrad in Gemini XI. They took 94 minutes from liftoff to docking with their Agena target.

However, Gemini XI docked with an unmanned target and both spacecraft had just been launched, so it's somewhat different from docking with a space station that follows an essentially non-modifiable orbit and therefore requires the chaser spacecraft to do almost all the maneuvers to fit in with the target's path. So maybe the comparison isn't fair.

So I looked further and found that if you require both spacecraft to be manned but allow non-Earth-orbit dockings, the six-hour liftoff-to-docking time is bested by… you guessed it. Apollo.

Specifically, Apollo 14 is the best, with just 107 minutes.

Here's a full list of MET times (liftoff and docking), based on NASA's Apollo timelines:

• Apollo 11: 124:22:00-128:03:00, 3h 41m 00s
• Apollo 12: 142:03:47-145:26:20, 3h 22m 33s
• Apollo 14: 141:45:40-143:32:50, 1h 47m 10s
• Apollo 15: 171:37:23-173:36:25, 1h 59m 02s
• Apollo 16: 175:31:47-177:41:18, 2h 09m 31s
• Apollo 17: 185:21:37-187:37:15, 2h 15m 38s

Per the timestamp on the images, the first one in the sequence was taken exactly at liftoff (8:43 PM GMT), and the last one was taken at 8:44 PM GMT - so they show liftoff and at least the first minute of the ascent.
