Suits For Shuttle: The years of development

In late 70s, for STS missions were chosen SR71 escape suit, and EVA ILC suit. Would be interesting know is others design for EVA (and escape) suits were evaluated for Space Shuttle in 1974-1976.

An escape suit in the 70s, then another in 74-76. Both for the Shuttle? The Shuttle did not fly until 1981, I'm not sure I understand your question?

1972:The launch-reentry suit for STS missions. Is basically a modified Apollo ASTP suit modified, with hard waist connector and a soft helmet .The helmet could be detachable, or hood type in Sokol (or Gemini 7) style. The suit was white, and had EVA limited capability for emergency tranfer to another Shuttle in rescue mission. http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/5453/stsiv36hl.jpg http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/3348/stsiv17yv.jpg http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7623/stsiv27qj.jpg

Interesting study.  I wonder if that much thought went into the full-pressure suits we used to use for flights in the high altitude aircraft...there was certainly no thought about comfort, I'm sure.  The longest time I ever had to wear them was maybe 9 to 10 hours.  And that was with the suits deflated.  Thankfully, the aircraft were pressurised to 25,000 feet most of the time.  The suits only pressurised at altitudes above 35,000 cabin altitude.

I only scanned the report.  I will read the full report later.

cheers,

Larry
