Hazegrayart: TWA Moonliner animation
« on: 08/23/2021 02:12 pm »

Quote
The Moonliner was designed by John Hench, with the help of German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. It resembled von Braun's V-2 rocket design but depicted what a commercial spaceliner might look like for traveling to the Moon in the faraway year of 1986.The propulsion would have come from an on-board atomic reactor

It was also an early example of modern product placement advertising by TWA's Howard Hughes teaming up with Walt Disney as the Moonliner's sponsor.

Not too different from Starship, when it comes to the over-all look, tho they would have been disappointed that we are still fiddling around with chemical combustion in 2021...

That thing certainly needed an ultra advanced nuclear engine to go all the way from Earth surface to Moon surface and back on a single stage...

I wish nuclear engines had been properly developed.
BTW, doesn't NTR have too low TWR for SSTO?  What sort of cycle was this planning to use?
Where would we be today if our forefathers hadn't dreamt of where they'd be tomorrow?  (For better and worse)

I got the impression that this was never a serious proposal, thus no real technical details were ever fleshed out. Rather, it was just promotional “eye candy” from Hughes, TWA, and Disney. From what I could determine, it never even got to the low level of development that Von Braun got to with the Ferry Rocket.

My own pedantic interest is that I'd like to see him tackle some of the INT Saturn versions of the late 1960s studies. Or--my biggest wish--do the entire 1969 Integrated Mars Mission.

Unfortunately, he recently released a series of upcoming video links (by mistake and was taken down a few hours later) of just shortened versions of his past works.  Around a dozen of them spread out over the remainder of the year. No mention of anything new.

So there I was, driving in downtown Kansas City October 13, 2013 with some of my cousins when I noticed this.  It was twilight and I did not have my good camera with me.  I think I previously saw it when I was in 3rd grade (1962-1963) at Dismaland, but I suppose it could be a false memory.

There's one in a hangar in KC as well. KC has some interesting museums. Also good barbecue.

Yeah. But he's always surprising us.

I don't like what he did with the Nova, especially the paint scheme. And there were several Nova concepts and he could also cover. But I don't want to be a Negative Nelly--I'm happy he produces anything he does. It's like free candy.
