The question now is: what launch vehicle could carry SPHEREx into orbit?

If it’s Falcon 9, it would be a waste since a lot of fuel would be left in both stages (with the exception of an RTLS landing).

 It would make more sense if either Pegasus or Minotaur-C can do the job.

So SpaceX is wayyyyyy overkill. Electron could do it, or the Pegasus XL.

Could be possible; I would guess if a heavier Earth observation satellite served as the primary payload, then SPHEREx can hitch a ride to its orbit.

What the CalTech SPHEREx website stated was a 74.5 kg mass for the payload, the single optical instrument. Not the entire spacecraft.

Ride share for the SPHEREx spacecraft might be tricky. From the Spaceflight Now link up thread the spacecraft is to be deployed in 700 km altitude Polar orbit.

What you need to do is establish which launchers have the capacity and availability to do the mission and then establish which of those is the cheapest! What does it matter to those who are paying for the launch how much propellant might go unused?

It's like when I go on vacation, I don't really care where I go, what I see, or what I do. I need to know the model number of the rental car.

I already know I am going to do a lot of really cool stuff on my vacation. I can even tell you all about it. But knowing what car I am going to get when I arrive is super important. Some cars just can't cut it (try putting 5 people and all their luggage into an Escape, like we tried once in Alaska) and some might have capability but are WAY too expensive. So I am going to go to a site that focuses on rental cars to talk about what is in the Hertz fleet and so forth. Not about what I plan to do on vacation.

This site is primarily focused on launchers. It's what many of us are interested in. Sorry about that.

NASA Awards Launch Services Contract for SPHEREx Astrophysics Mission

NASA has selected Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, California, to provide launch services for the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission. SPHEREx is a planned two-year astrophysics mission to survey the sky in the near-infrared light, which, though not visible to the human eye, serves as a powerful tool for answering cosmic questions involving the birth of the universe, and the subsequent development of galaxies.

It also will search for water and organic molecules – essentials for life as we know it – in regions where stars are born from gas and dust, known as stellar nurseries, as well as disks around stars where new planets could be forming. Astronomers will use the mission to gather data on more than 300 million galaxies, as well as more than 100 million stars in our own Milky Way galaxy.

The total cost for NASA to launch SPHEREx is approximately $98.8 million, which includes the launch service and other mission related costs.

The SPHEREx mission currently is targeted to launch as early as June 2024 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

NASA’s Launch Services Program at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida will manage the SpaceX launch service. The mission, which is funded by the Astrophysics Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, is led by the Explorer’s Program at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California is responsible for the mission’s overall project management, systems engineering, integration, and testing and mission operations.

Nice that it has a clearly focused goal of studying the beginning of the universe and galactic formation.

There seems to be a heavy bias toward infrared.  Isn't there a need for missions covering other spectra, especially ultraviolet?  Is this partly because longer wavelengths penetrate better not to mention red-shift for primordial objects?

There seems to be a heavy bias toward infrared. 

Only very hot stars emit a lot in the uv, and distant objects are redshifted. Also ir wavelengths are better at penetrating dust.

Besides hot stars, there are a lot of objects that emit a lot of UV (AGN, cataclysmic variables etc.). The big problem is absorption by dust and, at wavelengths below the Lyman limit, by neutral hydrogen gas. The near-UV part is not affected that badly, but it can often be observed by the same telescopes that are used in the optical (for example, COS instrument on HST).

Absorption by dust or hydrogen is not a problem when observing the Sun, and many heliophysics missions have UV instruments.

NASA’s Recently Launched SPHEREx Ejects Dust Cover From Telescope

NASA’s SPHEREx space observatory, which launched into low Earth orbit on March 11, has opened its eyes to the sky. On March 18, the mission team commanded the spacecraft to eject the protective dust cover that shielded the telescope opening. Once science operations begin several weeks from now, SPHEREx (short for Specto-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) will map the entire celestial sky to answer fundamental questions about the universe.

Measuring about 25 inches by 16 inches (64 centimeters by 40 centimeters), the cover kept particles and moisture off key pieces of hardware, including three telescope mirrors. To complete the ejection, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California sent a command to SPHEREx that activated two mechanical release mechanisms on the protective lid, and springs helped push it away from the observatory. After being ejected, the cover began to float away and will eventually burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The mission won’t power on the spacecraft’s camera until it has cooled to its operating temperature, which is colder than minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit (about minus 190 degrees Celsius). So to confirm the cover’s removal, team members observed a change in SPHEREx’s orientation — essentially, a slight jiggle of the observatory after each mechanism release. Shortly after the second jiggle, the telescope’s temperature began to drop, indicating it was exposed to the cold of space as planned.

The SPHEREx spacecraft is about the size of a subcompact car. The telescope is the portion of the observatory that collects light from distant stars and galaxies. Only about the size of a washing machine, it is nestled inside three cone-shaped photon shields that protect the instrument from light and heat from the Sun and Earth.

During its two-year prime mission, the observatory will use a technique called spectroscopy to create four all-sky maps featuring 102 wavelengths, or colors, of infrared light. This information can help scientists measure the distance to faraway galaxies, identify chemicals and molecules in cosmic gas clouds, and more.

After weeks of preparation, the space observatory has begun its science mission, taking about 3,600 unique images per day to create a map of the cosmos like no other.

Launched on March 11, NASA’s SPHEREx space observatory has spent the last six weeks undergoing checkouts, calibrations, and other activities to ensure it is working as it should. Now it’s mapping the entire sky — not just a large part of it — to chart the positions of hundreds of millions of galaxies in 3D to answer some big questions about the universe. On May 1, the spacecraft began regular science operations, which consist of taking about 3,600 images per day for the next two years to provide new insights about the origins of the universe, galaxies, and the ingredients for life in the Milky Way.

“Thanks to the hard work of teams across NASA, industry, and academia that built this mission, SPHEREx is operating just as we’d expected and will produce maps of the full sky unlike any we’ve had before,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “This new observatory is adding to the suite of space-based astrophysics survey missions leading up to the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Together with these other missions, SPHEREx will play a key role in answering the big questions about the universe we tackle at NASA every day.”

From its perch in Earth orbit, SPHEREx peers into the darkness, pointing away from the planet and the Sun. The observatory will complete more than 11,000 orbits over its 25 months of planned survey operations, circling Earth about 14½ times a day. It orbits Earth from north to south, passing over the poles, and each day it takes images along one circular strip of the sky. As the days pass and the planet moves around the Sun, SPHEREx’s field of view shifts as well so that after six months, the observatory will have looked out into space in every direction.

When SPHEREx takes a picture of the sky, the light is sent to six detectors that each produces a unique image capturing different wavelengths of light. These groups of six images are called an exposure, and SPHEREx takes about 600 exposures per day. When it’s done with one exposure, the whole observatory shifts position — the mirrors and detectors don’t move as they do on some other telescopes. Rather than using thrusters, SPHEREx relies on a system of reaction wheels, which spin inside the spacecraft to control its orientation.

Hundreds of thousands of SPHEREx’s images will be digitally woven together to create four all-sky maps in two years. By mapping the entire sky, the mission will provide new insights about what happened in the first fraction of a second after the big bang. In that brief instant, an event called cosmic inflation caused the universe to expand a trillion-trillionfold.

“We’re going to study what happened on the smallest size scales in the universe’s earliest moments by looking at the modern universe on the largest scales,” said Jim Fanson, the mission’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “I think there’s a poetic arc to that.”

Cosmic inflation subtly influenced the distribution of matter in the universe, and clues about how such an event could happen are written into the positions of galaxies across the universe. When cosmic inflation began, the universe was smaller than the size of an atom, but the properties of that early universe were stretched out and influence what we see today. No other known event or process involves the amount of energy that would have been required to drive cosmic inflation, so studying it presents a unique opportunity to understand more deeply how our universe works.

“Some of us have been working toward this goal for 12 years,” said Jamie Bock, the mission’s principal investigator at Caltech and JPL. “The performance of the instrument is as good as we hoped. That means we’re going to be able to do all the amazing science we planned on and perhaps even get some unexpected discoveries.”
Color Field

The SPHEREx observatory won’t be the first to map the entire sky, but it will be the first to do so in so many colors. It observes 102 wavelengths, or colors, of infrared light, which are undetectable to the human eye. Through a technique called spectroscopy, the telescope separates the light into wavelengths — much like a prism creates a rainbow from sunlight — revealing all kinds of information about cosmic sources.

For example, spectroscopy can be harnessed to determine the distance to a faraway galaxy, information that can be used to turn a 2D map of those galaxies into a 3D one. The technique will also enable the mission to measure the collective glow from all the galaxies that ever existed and see how that glow has changed over cosmic time.

And spectroscopy can reveal the composition of objects. Using this capability, the mission is searching for water and other key ingredients for life in these systems in our galaxy. It’s thought that the water in Earth’s oceans originated as frozen water molecules attached to dust in the interstellar cloud where the Sun formed.

The SPHEREx mission will make over 9 million observations of interstellar clouds in the Milky Way, mapping these materials across the galaxy and helping scientists understand how different conditions can affect the chemistry that produced many of the compounds found on Earth today.

In April 2025, just weeks after its launch, NASA's SPHEREx mission revealed a cloud of dust in a patch of sky inside the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy near the Milky Way, when making observations in a specific infrared wavelength (3.29 microns).

The difference between the images illustrates the power of multiwavelength observations for revealing hidden features of the universe – a key feature of SPHEREx.

Observing individual wavelengths of light from cosmic sources is called spectroscopy. This technique can be used to reveal the composition of objects, because chemical elements and molecules leave a unique signature in the colors they absorb and emit. Spectroscopy can also help scientists measure how far away galaxies are, making it essential for SPHEREx's goal of mapping the locations of hundreds of millions of galaxies in 3D.

SPHEREx detects infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, but is represented here in visible colors. The observatory will map the entire sky in 102 infrared colors (or wavelengths of light) to learn more about our universe. To do this, the mission images every object in the sky 102 times, each in a different wavelength. The spacecraft will map the entire sky four times over two years.

The remainder was allocated to contract monitoring and oversight during operations.
SPHEREx launched on March 11, 2025, which is 1 month before its April 2025 baseline launch readiness date.

In February 2025, SPHEREx demonstrated readiness for launch with acceptable risk, after the project had addressed several technical challenges prior to launch and had mitigation plans in work for remaining risks. For example, the project experienced challenges while testing the Near Space Network—which it needs to downlink data—with the project’s ground systems. The challenges were related to new software development, network configuration and a lack of automation at the ground stations. According to project documentation, as of February 2025, all network modifications were implemented or executing on schedule, and the network was prepared for the SPHEREx launch.
The project also successfully addressed challenges with its instrument control electronics that manage the spacecraft and collect, package, and transmit data back to Earth. If the instrument faces these challenges in orbit, the project believes it will be able to reload the software and resume the survey.

The project successfully completed testing of the reaction wheels, which are used to orient the telescope in space,in December 2024. As of January 2025, the project was working to obtain 1 year of post-launch support from the manufacturer in case of further anomalies. Between December 2023 and October 2024, the project experienced multiple anomalies with its reaction wheels. The anomalies included a significant cyber vulnerability and the wheels becoming unresponsive or malfunctioning at high speeds or due to voltage fluctuations. Project officials explained that a waiver was originally used to defer the reliability analysis requirement because the wheels were considered high heritage, meaning that the technology was previously used in space. However, anomalies occurred in post-delivery testing and the wheels were found to have less spaceflight experience than was originally understood.
The anomalies required a series of hardware, software, and firmware rework, which was completed in September 2024. Officials stated that the manufacturer accomplished all rework under warranty at no cost, but the project paid for expenses associated with additional analyses and overseeing the rework.

The project also cited severe staff burnout as a major risk that could lead to inefficient early mission operations.
According to the project, key personnel were lost in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory workforce reduction, which resulted in the remaining staff working dual roles with heavy workloads to complete testing and prepare for launch. Project documentation stated that if the burnout continued, it could lead to critical errors due to reduced capacity to check work and delay operational timelines.

NASA Enables SPHEREx Data Return Through Commercial Partnership [May 6]

To receive data from missions in space, NASA relies on the Near Space Network and Deep Space Network, a collection of antennas around the globe.

NASA’s New SPHEREx Mission Observes Interstellar Comet [Aug. 25]

NASA’s SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) observed interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS Aug. 7 to Aug. 15. The SPHEREx team has been analyzing insights from this data, and a research note is available online. The agency’s SPHEREx is one of NASA’s space telescopes observing this comet, together providing more information about its size, physical properties, and chemical makeup. For example, NASA’s Webb and Hubble space telescopes also recently observed the comet. While the comet poses no threat to Earth, NASA’s space telescopes help support the agency’s ongoing mission to find, track, and better understand solar system objects.

NASA’s SPHEREx Observatory Completes First Cosmic Map Like No Other [Dec 18]

Launched in March, NASA’s SPHEREx space telescope has completed its first infrared map of the entire sky in 102 colors. While not visible to the human eye, these 102 infrared wavelengths of light are prevalent in the cosmos, and observing the entire sky this way enables scientists to answer big questions, including how a dramatic event that occurred in the first billionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second after the big bang influenced the 3D distribution of hundreds of millions of galaxies in our universe. In addition, scientists will use the data to study how galaxies have changed over the universe’s nearly 14 billion-year history and learn about the distribution of key ingredients for life in our own galaxy. 

“It’s incredible how much information SPHEREx has collected in just six months — information that will be especially valuable when used alongside our other missions’ data to better understand our universe,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We essentially have 102 new maps of the entire sky, each one in a different wavelength and containing unique information about the objects it sees. I think every astronomer is going to find something of value here, as NASA’s missions enable the world to answer fundamental questions about how the universe got its start, and how it changed to eventually create a home for us in it.”

Circling Earth about 14½ times a day, SPHEREx (which stands for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) travels from north to south, passing over the poles. Each day it takes about 3,600 images along one circular strip of the sky, and as the days pass and the planet moves around the Sun, SPHEREx’s field of view shifts as well. After six months, the observatory has looked out into space in every direction, capturing the entire sky in 360 degrees.

Managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, the mission began mapping the sky in May and completed its first all-sky mosaic in December. It will complete three additional all-sky scans during its two-year primary mission, and merging those maps together will increase the sensitivity of the measurements. The entire dataset is freely available to scientists and the public. 

“SPHEREx is a mid-sized astrophysics mission delivering big science,” said JPL Director Dave Gallagher. “It’s a phenomenal example of how we turn bold ideas into reality, and in doing so, unlock enormous potential for discovery.” 

Superpowered telescope
Each of the 102 colors detected by SPHEREx represents a wavelength of infrared light, and each wavelength provides unique information about the galaxies, stars, planet-forming regions, and other cosmic features therein. For example, dense clouds of dust in our galaxy where stars and planets form radiate brightly in certain wavelengths but emit no light (and are therefore totally invisible) in others. The process of separating the light from a source into its component wavelengths is called spectroscopy. 

And while a handful of previous missions has also mapped the entire sky, such as NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, none have done so in nearly as many colors as SPHEREx. By contrast, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope can do spectroscopy with significantly more wavelengths of light than SPHEREx, but with a field of view thousands of times smaller. The combination of colors and such a wide field of view is why SPHEREx is so powerful.

“The superpower of SPHEREx is that it captures the whole sky in 102 colors about every six months. That’s an amazing amount of information to gather in a short amount of time,” said Beth Fabinsky, the SPHEREx project manager at JPL. “I think this makes us the mantis shrimp of telescopes, because we have an amazing multicolor visual detection system and we can also see a very wide swath of our surroundings.”

To accomplish this feat, SPHEREx uses six detectors, each paired with a specially designed filter that contains a gradient of 17 colors. That means every image taken with those six detectors contains 102 colors (six times 17). It also means that every all-sky map that SPHEREx produces is really 102 maps, each in a different color. 

The observatory will use those colors to measure the distance to hundreds of millions of galaxies. Though the positions of most of those galaxies have already been mapped in two dimensions by other observatories, SPHEREx’s map will be in 3D, enabling scientists to measure subtle variations in the way galaxies are clustered and distributed across the universe. 

Those measurements will offer insights into an event that took place in the first billionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second after the big bang. In this moment, called inflation, the universe expanded by a trillion-trillionfold. Nothing like it has occurred in the universe since, and scientists want to understand it better. The SPHEREx mission’s approach is one way to help in that effort.
