Shuttle Vehicle Processing in OPF
« on: 06/16/2008 11:39 am »
Just a small question, with a very large answer required!

What happens to the vehicle in the OPF?

Does it get stripped down completely (as I read somewhere once) or something else?

What about cleaning / removing toxic chemicals?

It doesn't get stripped down, that is what an OMFP or OMM is.

The fuel cell H2 and O2 get offloaded.  So do the MMH, N2O4 and hydrazine.  The OMS pods and FRSC get removed if needed for troubleshooting or due for refurb.
The SSME's get removed for refurb.  Any black boxes or other systems that failed have troubleshooting done and removal if needed.

The mid deck has everything removed.  payload bay is deconfigured and reconfigured and cleaned for the next mission

So do the MMH, N2O4 and hydrazine.

The hypergols do not get offloaded.

Short answer to the original question, every system is tested to make sure all components are functioning within the requirements specification.  Anything that doesn't meet it's requirement is trouble shot, fixed if possible, possibly replaced or waived if sufficient rationale exists.  Any issues we had from the previous flight are trouble shot and components replaced if necessary.

...as an 'airliner', I would call it -the B-check- where every single part of a passenger and/or cargo-aircraft will as well be completely removed, checked and attached again ...

But far from everything is removed.  In fact we remove as little as possible.
