The book Beyond Blue Skies: The Rocket Plane Programs That Led to the Space Age argues that the X-1 used by Chuck Yeager to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, was the first in a long line of experimental aircraft designed to not just travel at supersonic and hypersonic speeds but also constituted a preliminary step in providing aerodynamic data that would be capitalized upon by flights of the D-558-II Skyrocket, X-2, X-15, Northrop lifting bodies, and X-24, and eventually used to assist aerospace engineers in developing the Space Shuttle.
