Advanced Life Support Sizing Analysis Tool (ALSSAT)

Quote
ALSSAT has been developed for use in the sizing and analysis of Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) for spacecraft and habitats. The purpose of this tool is to perform life support system trade studies and analysis. ALSSAT aids in the creation of conceptual designs for advanced systems using physiochemical and biological processes in either open-loop systems or closed-loop systems that recycle air and water as well as process human waste products. The regenerative life support processes can be used as a means to decrease the amount of consumable re-supply required for a range of missions including in-space transit vehicles or habitats, and surface habitats on the moon or Mars.

Low Fidelity Space Systems Analysis Tools - ISRU Demo Plant Sizing Tool

Quote
The Agile ISRU Demo Plant Sizing Tool will provide a rough parametric estimate of ISRU plant mass and power requirements based on fitting data to a heritage curve. NEO, Phobos, Lunar Surface, and Martian Surface are included at a notional level within this system that allows architecture designers to roughly scale ISRU plants before talking to specialists.

Low Fidelity Space Systems Analysis Tools - Short Duration Habitat Sizing Tool

Quote
This tool sizes short duration human habitats for short missions less than 20 days based on identified human operations requirements.

Mars In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) Propellant Production Discrete Event Simulation (DES)- MIPP-D.

Quote
Mars In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) Propellant Production Discrete Event Simulation (DES)- MIPP-DMIPP-D is a Simio based Discrete Event Simulation modeling Mars surface propellant production. The focus is on the actual chemical plant and processes, including incoming and outgoing materials, associated with the production of rocket fuel on Mars. The fuel will be for the Mars Ascent Vehicle used to carry humans into space from the surface of Mars. The Simulation utilizes NASA ground rules and assumptions as well as data from prototype chemical plants, NASA experts and literature.

Thermal Insulation System Analysis Tool (TISTool)

Quote
The Thermal Insulation System Analysis Tool has been updated with more test data from the Cryogenics Test Laboratory and has been converted to Fortran 95 to allow for easier distribution.

Toolbox for the Modeling and Analysis of Thermodynamic Systems (T-MATS)

Quote
The Toolbox for the Modeling and Analysis of Thermodynamic Systems (T-MATS) is a Simulink toolbox intended for use in the modeling and simulation of thermodynamic systems and their controls. T-MATS contains generic thermodynamic and controls components that may be combined with a variable input iterative solver and optimization algorithm to create complex systems to meet the needs of a developer.

OLTARIS

Quote
OLTARIS, the On-Line Tool for the Assessment of Radiation in Space.  OLTARIS is an integrated tool set utilizing HZETRN (High Charge and Energy Transport).  These tools are intended to help scientists and engineers study the effects of space radiation on shielding materials, electronics, and biological systems.

--

Example:

Mars base SPE with ISRU water shielding

Model:

- Characteristic SpaceX Mars base site at -3 km elevation

- Solar particle event matching flux of the Oct. 1989 SPE

Simulations:

1.  no shield (red)

2.  1 cm aluminum hab (gray)

3.  1 cm aluminum plus 100 cm water ice cover (blue)

Output:

Proton flux per cm2 (image)

Result:

While a cm of aluminum offers negligible SPE protection, a meter of ISRU water cuts SPE peak proton flux (at 75 MeV) by two full orders of magnitude.

Power Beaming

Large PV space facilities may produce powerful electromagnetic beams, e.g., for interplanetary laser communication relays or commercial solar power transmissions.

Power beaming efficiency is high inside the Fresnel zone, and it falls off with 1/r^2 outside that zone.  The MATLAB simulator of Hutson and Rodenbeck 2021 visualizes efficiency for most any frequency, distance, aperture, and amplitude distribution.  Phased arrays are also simulated.

Code in appendices.

Hutson, J.V. and Rodenbeck, C.T., 2021. Computation of Power Beaming Efficiency in the Fresnel Zone with Application to Amplitude and Phase Optimization. Naval Research Laboratory.

Calorie yield per unit area or unit volume remains a great challenge in space facility designs, where area and volume are tightly constrained.  A high-intensity wheat plot might give ~ 10x the typical greenhouse yield per m2, e.g., of Meyer 2018, but self-sufficiency greenhouses may require even greater yield density.  Greenhouse optimization might require perfection of many cycles located outside the greenhouse itself, as in Nguyen et al. 2022.

Artificial Gravity - Control Systems

HPS

The Hybrid Simulation Platform for Space Systems (HPS) is an open-source MATLAB/Simulink library under development for "system dynamics of space vehicles, their sensors and actuators as well as the prevalent environmental conditions and disturbances".

HPS was used to encode attitude control for the Eu:CROPIS satellite, which employed magnetic spin stabilization against disturbances under artificial gravity.  Heidecker et al. 2014.
