Spacelab-D4
« on: 09/19/2006 10:13 am »
Has anyone a link to information on Spacelab-D4 or does anyone know what the payload would have looked like, or what instruments would have flown?

I would like to know because I found some sort of footnote in a very old book on Spacelab that mentions a D4 pallet-only German astrophysics mission and also briefly mentions GIRL, the German Infrared Radiation Laboratoy. Does that mean that D4 was GIRL, or was GIRL just a set or sub-set of instruments? The 2001 edition of Jenkins has a graphic manifest from 1979 and -- on close inspection! -- there is a D4 in it. No details there also, but it appears that D4 would have been 2 + 2 pallets -- a bit like SL-02 with 1 + 2 pallets.

So do we know more about Spacelab-D4? I am just curious. I tried to google for it, but with no success...

The KSC payload processing contractor use to put out a book with all the shuttle payloads in it.  I have some pre 51-L and will try to dig them up
