It's looking more and more probable that Milton will bring half a foot of rain (or more) Tuesday-Wednesday next week.  Make preparations if you are in the probable path and there's anything you can actually do to prepare.

The spread in the models on this thing is a little nuts - central pressure from 993mb to 920mb(!).  So weak hurricane up to cat-4.  All the models do predict a lot of rain along the path and most of the paths are now between Tampa and the Panhandle.

Just keep yourselves safe, okay?

3 models are now predicting a cat-5 of 140-160kts at landfall.  3 others are predicting cat-2 to cat-4.  The highest model is predicting 900mb central pressure at landfall.  Ouch, if it happens.

Florida has more sandy soil and drains the water away better than inland like the hurricane hitting Georgia, N and S Carolina.  Red clay on the Piedmont plateau holds water and becomes mud causing mud slides.  The storm surge will cause heavy flooding along the coast and the rivers going to the coast in Florida.  Most homes in Florida built in the last 20-30 years are built to withstand high winds in Florida.  They still have a lot of mobile homes though.

Cape Kennedy, the VAB cannot withstand winds over about 140-150 mph.  The metal covering will begin to peal off.  This may be a big one, but it is coming from the west and has to cross Florida to get to Cape Kennedy.  I hope in goes further south to miss the most populated areas of central Florida.

If it hits just wrong, in location and timed with the tides, Tampa Bay could see 20+ feet of surge.

This warning from NHC is interesting.

"RAINFALL: Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches, with localized totals up to 15 inches, are expected across portions of the Florida Peninsula and the Keys through Wednesday night. This rainfall brings the risk of considerable flash, urban, and areal flooding, along with the potential for moderate to major river flooding."

Data from both Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Milton has strengthened to a category 4 hurricane. The maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 150 mph (240 km/h). Milton is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Data from the aircraft also indicate that the minimum pressure has fallen to 940 mb (27.76 inches).

By the way, this thing has slowed down and eye landfall is now expected Wednesday evening rather than morning.  There will be lots of effects before that, including rain and tornados on the West coast of Florida.

This one isn't messing around.  If I were in or around Tampa, I'd be trying to be elsewhere.

From the hurricane hunters:
912mb central pressure
158kts sustained

Ouch.

Cape Kennedy, the VAB cannot withstand winds over about 140-150 mph.  The metal covering will begin to peal off.  This may be a big one, but it is coming from the west and has to cross Florida to get to Cape Kennedy.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/152801.shtml?tswind120#wcontents shows there's a roughly 80% chance of at least tropical storm force winds at the Cape. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/152801.shtml?hwind120#wcontents shows there's a roughly 20% chance of hurricane force winds at the Cape.  So most likely (60% chance) there will be tropical storm force winds but not hurricane force winds. From the "peak wind threat" chart in https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2024-10-07-hurricane-milton-forecast-florida-storm-surge-wind-flooding the Cape should plan for at most 74-110 mph winds (64-96 knots, i.e. category I or II hurricane). So the VAB is probably safe against catastrophic damage. [Edit: according to that chart it will be worse (110+ mph) for parts of the west coast of Florida such as Tampa.]

From https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/152801.shtml?cone#contents and https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCMAT4+shtml/071452.shtml it's clear why stronger winds aren't expected: the hurricane will reach the Cape at around 9 am CDT Thursday = 1400 Z and at that time it will have weakened with peak wind speed only around 85 knots (interpolating).

Edit: also the Cape may see 3-5' of storm surge, 3-5" of rain and other parts of Florida will see much worse.

Everything in my last message is still accurate with the latest forecast (#11 at 5 pm EDT Monday) except the storm surge at the Cape is down slightly to 2-4'.

Don't use click-bait channels when you can get a much better resolution from the NASA site.  Also, there is a General Thread already going with this storm in which your post should have been placed.

Not being pedantic here, just want to prevent confusion among readers, especially non-USA and younger ones. It's Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center (KSC). It was Cape Kennedy for a 10-year period after his assassination, but was officially renamed back to Cape Canaveral in 1973.

Again, I'm not trying to be pedantic; this is too serious a subject for that. This is so that readers who are unaware of the history of the names looking at National Hurricane Center bulletins will be able to correctly discern which geographical features are being talked about.

Perhaps more importantly, wind speed probability charts show >50% chance of >50 kt winds and >80% chance of tropical storm force winds there.

The predictions now are for a gradual weakening but also a gradual enlargement.  Most of the models have landfall at or just north of Tampa Bay at something near cat-4 level.  As usual, the likely biggest killer will be water, both surge and rain but a cat-4 level of wind will wipe out a lot of stuff and thus get a lot of debris entrained in the air, which is also deadly.

FYI, most humans cannot stand up in 80mph wind.  By 100mph, even being on your knees is tough.  I've been in 110 and I was on my chest and I've been in 140 and it will pick up things like fully loaded trailers and cargo containers.  Most people overestimate the wind speed they are standing in by a factor of two or so.

If you look at the linked image, you can see why Tampa Bay could get a huge surge, especially if timing with the tides and location end up as a worst case.  All that purple on-shore flow will push water up into the bay and that will combine with the low pressure to make a large increase in sea level.

I'm about halfway between coasts and expect to be in the bulls eye Wednesday evening to early Thursday. Seems like a cat2 or strong cat1 by then. Should be interesting here, but hopefully less interesting by the time it .reaches the space coast.

I'm still thinking the space coast will see 80-100mph gusts, excluding any tornadic activity that develops.  Of course, it's just a prediction...

They're warning Tampa of the largest storm surge there since 1848.  I'm guessing there are a few more people and structures there now than then.  If you're there, especially at a low level and near the water, you might consider leaving or at least getting to higher ground inland aqay from the bay.

The storm surge on the space coast is predicted to be a more modest 2-6 feet.

165 knots in the last pass.  Yikes.  A hypothetical cat-6 might be at around 167 knots.

The models are struggling to predict intensity more than track right now.

The expected rain for the space coast has increased, now up to 6-18 inches all the way to the Cape along the I-4 from one coast to the other.

In addition to the thousands (>10k) of Starlink kits we are delivering in response to Hurricane Helene, the @Starlink team and @TMobile activated our Direct to Cell satellites to provide emergency alerts for all phones and carriers of those in affected areas.

The @FCC has also rapidly approved emergency special temporary authority for coverage in Florida ahead of Hurricane Milton.

We have now enabled basic texting (SMS) for those on T-Mobile phones in hurricane affected areas. Text messages have already been sent and received. You can text loved ones, text 911 and continue to receive emergency alerts.

If a phone connects to a Starlink satellite, it will have 1 to 2 bars of signal and show "T-Mobile SpaceX" in the network name. Users may have to manually retry text messages if they don't go through at first, as this is being delivered on a best-effort basis. The service works best outdoors, and occasionally works indoors near a window.

And slightly south of Tampa - unlike the model predictions yesterday.

There is tornado activity on the approaching side of the hurricane.  Hopefully, they or others who get generated will miss the Cape.

For those of you who are not familiar with the NWS nomenclature, a tornado WARNING means that an actual tornado has been sighted. This is not  just a general caution. This is also why the map shows a bunch of specific areas. The whole much larger area is under a tornado WATCH.

Worse, many from the West Coast moved inland to avoid the storm surge, only to be caught in the crosshairs of all these tornadoes.

How prepared are Floridians for tornadoes? In "tornado alley" (e.g., Kansas, etc.) residents often  have storm cellars or especially-constructed shelter rooms, usually an interior room with reinforced walls. But in Florida, a cellar would be a bad idea due to flooding.

People can buy steel above ground storm rooms that are anchored to a concrete pad.  Some are only big enough for 2 people, some bigger.  They have to be higher than flood zone.  I retired in 2013 and though about moving to Florida, but decided not to.  Why, because of hurricanes, alligators, boa constrictors, and mosquitoes.  In summer sometimes in rains every afternoon.  Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and South Dakota have no tax on retirement income.  Texas is too hot in summer, and too cold in winter sometimes, South Dakota is too cold, Florida well see above, so that leaves Tennessee.  I live in Alabama.  Low property taxes, low income tax, low cost of living, but still hot in summer.

I did see some time ago, that the VAB can only withstand 140 mph winds.

This is bad....Tropicana Field was turned into a hurricane shelter with thousands of beds.  The hurricane ripped the roof off of it.  Looks like the structure is okay just the fabric is gone.  I hope everyone is okay.

Isn't it really unusual to predict the track so accurately so far out?

Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is now in RECON 2 in response to Hurricane Milton. This means that the initial damage assessment& safety hazard mitigation are complete. The HRT and APPOINTED mission essential personnel are beginning to restore critical infrastructure.

ONLY APPOINTED mission essential personnel will have access to enter Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at this time.

CCSFS currently does not have potable water.  All personnel reporting to the installation are advised to bring their own water source.

Jeez - go look at the track in post 2 of this thread from four days ago.  This storm followed that exact track.

Isn't it really unusual to predict the track so accurately so far out?

I think they've been pretty accurate this year. Debby and Helene were both very close to the track forecast days earlier.

In recent years, track is generally well-forecasted days ahead.  Forecasting intensity is the current challenge.
