In the late 1950s Convair (later absorbed by General Dynamics) undertook design studies for nuclear-powered spacecraft to be used for carrying astronauts to the Moon and Mars, called Hyperion, UMPIRE, and EMPIRE. More info about the Hyperion, UMPIRE, and EMPIRE can be found at these links:
