UC Berkeley Nov 3 2018 FAR launch

mojaverockets
Published on Nov 15, 2018

After 4 weeks of intense composite manufacturing research and development, the team successfully launched its 7.5 ft all custom composite body rocket, Low Altitude Demonstrator LAD-001 "Sparky" at Friends of Amateur Rocketry site in Randsburg, CA. The primary purpose of this launch was to validate advance composite manufacturing practices that will transfer into the team's space-shot rocket, EUREKA-1.  Unfortunately, at apogee, both CO2 and black powder ejection systems failed to deploy the chute causing the rocket to freefall down to the ground. Inspecting the rocket after flight, the team found that the deployment issue was due to shear pin failure on the nosecone-mainbody connection.

I put this together from some video I took this year of various rocket projects in response to peopleon social media asking why do liquid bi-propellant rocket stuff. The last two tests are of a student's very successful 1,500 pound thrust bi-propellant LOX-kero motor.

My thanks to all that are in the video. Included in the video: Estes black powder, commercial APCP, experimental APCP, commercial nitrous oxide HTPB, and liquid oxygen/kerosene.

I think the burn rate might have been a little too high!

Eric Beckner experimental 98mm N-impulse APCP propellant motor test.
UC Irvine was just about ready with their liquid Bi-prop motor test when I asked Eric at the bunker if there were any cameras on his test. He said no and asked if he wanted one...ran out there and was going to place it at the motor bulkhead but thought, sometimes APCP motors CATO so I placed it at a safe distance and ran back to the bunker. Countdown starts at 0:35
