Electostatic sheet supported tower

Could we reduce the strength of the material required to build a space tower by placing like charged sheets one atop another?
This would mean that the total weight supported will be much lower because of the empty space between the sheets. Obviously some wires would be needed to supply power and prevent sidewise motion.
And i guess it depends on how much current we'll have to supply to keep them charged.

You can try doing some calculations using the formula for the Coulomb force, but I think you will find that this idea doesn't give you much. After all, a normal material such as steel also has a lot of space within and between atoms, by employing the same mechanism of electrostatic repulsion. If it weren't for the electrons keeping things apart, steel would be much more dense.
