Europe's Vega rocket is back in action tonight, launching from French Guiana at 9:36pm EDT (0136 UTC) with 12 satellites heading for polar orbit.

This is the second to last flight of the base version of Vega, while the upgraded Vega-C will be grounded until late 2024.

-Anomaly that delayed Long test fire is caused by an impermeability issues in the hydraulic systems of the Vulcan's TVC, Arianegroup expects a quick fix that should not affect the first launch's schedule
-WDR in deteriorated conditions planned for October 24-25
-Long test fire is planned for Late november, pending repairs of the Vulcain's nozzle.
-First launch A6's fairing arriving in Kourou on November 3, its core stage and upper stage on December 10
-Planned launch rate: 2 A6 in 2024, 6 in 2025, 8 in 2026, 10 in 2027; First 4 will be Ariane 62
-2 of the 18 kuiper launches seem to have been shifted to Ariane 62 (instead of the previous 16 A64+ plus 2 A64)

At ESA’s November 2022 ministerial meeting, member states approved plans for a two-satellite follow-on mission, Aeolus 2, slated to launch at the end of the decade in cooperation with Eumetsat. “This decision taken last year is the most tangible and most solid demonstration of the value of the success of this mission, which perhaps was not obvious at the beginning,” he said.

Still whispers, but it looks like Sentinel-1C, which is currently scheduled to be launched aboard Vega C in 2024, will be launched aboard Falcon 9. It will likely first be announced that it will be launched aboard the Vega C return to flight mission. However, not only will Vega C likely not make the late 2024 deadline but it’s also considered unlikely that it will have the performance on the return to flight mission for S1C, as it's at the high end of the vehicle's performance envelope. When the contract was initially signed in 2022, S1C was slated to be launched in the first half of 2023. Image credit: IABG

New way forward for future large (L-class) mission: NewAthena

ESA’s Science Programme Committee has also today endorsed a rescoped version of Athena, which was selected as a large mission in 2014. Designed to capture X-ray light to study the hot and energetic Universe, the way forward for 'NewAthena' is expected to transform our knowledge in almost every corner of modern astrophysics.

ESA, the science community, instrument teams, and international partners have worked hard to come up with a simplified mission design that meets the cost requirements set by the Science Programme Committee but nevertheless delivers scientific excellence and ambition in line with that expected of a flagship L-class mission.

The adoption of NewAthena is expected in 2027, with launch planned for 2037.

WASHINGTON — The European Space Agency announced Nov. 6 it will start a competition to develop commercial vehicles to transport cargo to and from the International Space Station by 2028, a step towards developing a crewed vehicle.

https://spacenews.com/arianegroup-begins-testing-prototype-of-multirole-susie-upper-stage/

Although specific dates and budget figures are not available, the timeline for a smaller commercial cargo version of Susie could be ready for 2028, meeting the deadline set by ESA for the European reusable cargo system contest. The system would be intended to serve the ISS and potentially Starlab and commercial space stations.

The spacecraft design intends to be scalable without significant changes to its aerodynamic values. Crewed missions could potentially occur in the early 2030s, says Wolf.

Calibration and validation for the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission concept: Recommendations for a multi-sensor system for imaging spectroscopy and thermal imagery
August 23, 2023

The primary objective of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission is to measure biological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical features of the Earth's surface, realizing a key conceptual component of the envisioned NASA Earth System Observatory (ESO). SBG is planned to launch as a two-platform mission in the late 2020s, the first of the ESO satellites. Targeted science and applications objectives based on observations of the Earth's SBG helped to define the mission architecture and instrument capabilities for the SBG mission concept.

ESA sets mid-2024 date for first Ariane 6 launch
November 30, 2023

[...]

At a Nov. 30 briefing, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher announced a launch period for the inaugural Ariane 6 flight of June 15 through July 31. A more precise launch date will be provided after qualification reviews in the spring of 2024.

[...]

If the first launch is successful, ESA and Arianespace will work towards a second launch before the end of 2024. “The target is to have a second flight by the end of the year,” said Stéphane Israël, chief executive of Arianespace. “This is a key target for us.” That second launch, he later said, would carry the CSO-3 reconnaissance satellite for the French military.
