Hi!
This is not a flight adapter, so cannot be a picture of the fitcheck  ;)
It is likely picture of them about to move the SC to the flight adaptor.

1. this description came from Arianespace, so complain to them
2. a fitcheck isn't always with flight hardware

;)

1. Agree ! Although it wasn't a complain, just a (maniac) correction  ;)
2. Huh ? Any interest of performing a fitcheck with non flight HW at the launch site ?

Arianespace: first Ariane 5 launches in 2014

Kourou, December 19, 2013

Just a few hours after the successful launch of the European Space Agency Gaia satellite, Arianespace can confirm the dates of its first two Ariane 5 launches for 2014.

* 23 January 2014, an Ariane 5 ECA (VA217) will place into orbit two telecommunications satellites: ABS-2 for ABS and ATHENA-FIDUS for Telespazio, for the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI).

* 19 February 2014, the VA216 launch vehicle will place into orbit ASTRA 5B for SES and AMAZONAS 4A for Hispasat.

Stéphane Israël, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace said that he “would like to thank the clients of these two launches for their trust, and in particular the Luxembourg operator SES for accepting the February launch. The excellent collaboration between our teams has enabled us to plan these two missions for the early weeks of 2014. Once again Arianespace has shown commitment and flexibility in serving its clients."

So VA217 will now go ahead of VA216 - when was the last time there was such a swap in Arianespace history?

Amazonas 4A is prepared for Arianespace's second Ariane 5 flight of 2014

February 13, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA216

Pre-launch checkout is now underway in French Guiana with Amazonas 4A, one of two satellite passengers to be orbited on Arianespace's next mission with its workhorse heavy-lift Ariane 5 – which is scheduled for liftoff on March 7.

HISPASAT’s Amazonas 4A satellite is now at the Spaceport for its March 7 liftoff on Ariane 5.

Amazonas 4A currently is in the Spaceport's S1B clean room facility, having been removed from the shipping container that protected this spacecraft during its voyage to French Guiana aboard a chartered cargo jetliner earlier this month.

Designed and built by Orbital Sciences Corporation based on its GEOStar™-2 platform, Amazonas 4A will provide enhanced relay capacity over Latin America and an extended range of communications and television services for operator HISPASAT. After deployment by Ariane 5, it will operate from an orbital position of 61 deg. West.

Amazonas 4A is outfitted with 24 Ku-band active transponders for its mission, and has a liftoff mass of approximately 3,000 kg. The spacecraft offers a design life set at 15 years.

Joining Amazonas 4A on Ariane 5's upcoming flight is the Airbus Defence and Space-built ASTRA 5B satellite, which will extend operator SES’ transponder capacity and geographical reach over Eastern Europe and neighboring markets – delivering direct-to-home, direct-to-cable and contribution feeds to digital terrestrial television networks. It also carries a hosted L-band payload for the European Commission’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

The March 7 launch continues a busy year of mission activity for Arianespace, which was kicked off February 6 with another Ariane 5 dual-passenger success that orbited ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus. It will be the second of up to 12 Arianespace flights planned from the Spaceport in 2014, which would set an operational record for the company.

Is this right? In 2000 they had 12 successful launches, with a mix of Ariane 4s and 5s. There were also 12 launches in 2002, but with one failure (V-157).

I will ask, but this has been noted before in the previous launch thread, indeed 2000 had 12 launches, also 2002 (or 11 if you don't count with the one failed)

I assume that will delay the Sentinel 1 launch too?

it might, depends on what the new launch date for VA216 is, Arianespace is trying to cut down on range re-config time between A5 and Soyuz to around 2 weeks (which they have done before already btw)

ASTRA 5B is delivered to the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building for integration on its Ariane 5 launcher

March 13, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA216

The ASTRA 5B satellite, one of two passengers for Arianespace’s next Ariane 5 mission, has been delivered to the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building – marking a step in payload integration.

ASTRA 5B – built by Airbus Defence and Space for global satellite operator SES – was transported this week from the Spaceport’s S5 payload preparation facility, where the spacecraft underwent pre-flight checkout and received its fuel load. The transfer took place at night in order to reduce thermal loads on the satellite.

After deployment by Ariane 5, ASTRA 5B will extend SES’ transponder capacity and geographical reach over Eastern Europe and neighboring markets, delivering direct-to-home, direct-to-cable and contribution feeds to digital terrestrial television networks. The spacecraft also carries a hosted L-band payload for the European Commission’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

ASTRA 5B will be joined on the upcoming flight by HISPASAT’s Amazonas 4A satellite – which will provide enhanced relay capacity over Latin America and an extended range of communications and television services. Amazonas 4A was produced by Orbital Sciences Corporation.

The upcoming Ariane 5 mission – designated VA216 in Arianespace’s numbering system – is set for March 21 from the Spaceport, with liftoff scheduled to occur during a launch window opening at 7:05 local time in French Guiana.
