Arianespace orders 35 Ariane 5 ECA launchers from Astrium
Paris, February 2, 2009

On Friday, January 30 at European Space Agency headquarters in Paris, Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, and Alain Charmeau, Chief Executive Officer of Astrium Space Transportation, signed a contract for the production of 35 Ariane 5 ECA launchers (designated the “PB” batch).

Worth more than 4 billion euros, this contract follows the letter of intent signed at the last Paris Air Show in 2007, at a ceremony attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The launchers in the PB batch will be used starting in the second half of 2010, after the 30 Ariane 5 launchers ordered in 2004 (“PA” batch).

Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of the European Space Agency, and Antonio Fabrizi, Director of Launchers at ESA, were also present at the contract signature.

With this contract, Arianespace now has 49 Ariane 5 launchers under production. Along with the upcoming service entry of the Vega and Soyuz launchers at the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, this will guarantee the long-term availability of Arianespace Service & Solutions for all customers. Arianespace is the world’s leading supplier of commercial launch services, with an order book exceeding three years of operations.

Astrium is the sole prime contractor for Ariane 5, delivering a complete, tested and integrated launcher to Arianespace at the Guiana Space Center. Astrium manages all industry contracts for the 12 countries who are partners in the Ariane program.

The Ariane 5 ECA launcher contract signed on Friday confirms the full-fledged commitment of Arianespace and the European space industry to the long-term availability, reliability and competitiveness of Ariane 5. Arianespace to launch Hispasat 1E
Evry, February 3, 2009

Spanish operator Hispasat has chosen Arianespace to launch its new communications satellite, Hispasat 1E.

Petra Mateos-Aparicio, Chairman of Hispasat, and Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, announced today the signature of the launch service & solutions contract for the Hispasat 1E satellite. It is the first contract of 2009 signed by Arianespace.

Hispasat 1E will be launched by an Ariane 5 at the end of 2010 from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The satellite will be built by Space Systems/Loral using an LS 1300 platform. Weighing about 5,270 kg at launch, it will be fitted with 53 active Ku-band transponders. This powerful satellite will give Hispasat additional capacity, enabling it to offer a broader range of video and data transmission services with a European and pan-American coverage. Positioned in geostationary orbit at 30 degrees West, Hispasat 1E has a design life of 15 years.

Hispasat 1E will be the sixth Spanish satellite launched by Arianespace. The European launcher had already orbited Hispasat 1A and 1B In 1992 and 1993. More recently, in 2005 and 2006, the Hispasat group called on Arianespace to launch their XTAR-Eur and Spainsat satellites from HISDESAT. This year Arianespace will launch another of the company’s satellites, Amazonas-2.

Commenting on this latest contract, Arianespace Chairman and CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall said: “We are very proud and honored to be working once again with a customer as prestigious as Hispasat. Arianespace to launch two satellites for Arabsat
Evry, February 4, 2009

Saudi-Arabia based operator Arabsat selects Arianespace to launch the Arabsat 5C and Arabsat 6B satellites.

The Arabsat 5C satellite is scheduled for a launch into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) from the third quarter of 2011. It will be launched by an Ariane 5 ECA from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The launch of Arabsat 6B is scheduled from the second half of 2012.

These two contracts are the 14th and 15th launch Service & Solutions contracts that Arianespace has signed in the Middle East.

The Arabsat 5C and 6B satellites will be built by EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, as part of a turnkey contract with the satellite communications operator Arabsat, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Astrium will supply the Eurostar E3000 platforms and handle satellite integration, while Thales Alenia Space will supply the payloads.

Offering a design life exceeding 15 years, these two communications satellites will provide telecommunications and television broadcast services in the Middle East and Africa. Arabsat 5C will be fitted with 26 active C band and 12 Ka-band transponders, and will be positioned at 20 degrees East. Arabsat 6B will be equipped with 36 active Ku-band transponders and will be positioned at 26 degrees East. Both satellites will weigh less than 5 tons.

ViaSat Inc. is canceling its contract with Arianespace for an Ariane 5 launch of the ViaSat-1 satellite in favor of an International Launch Services (ILS) Russian Proton rocket, ViaSat announced March 11. The decision will save ViaSat some $20 million even if it pays contract-cancellation penalties to Arianespace, the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company said March 11.
