This is one drawback of a more weather tolerant launch vehicle ... the PAO views can be significantly less impressive.

Given that the alternative is a scrub, I'd say even a launch in less favourable weather would be more impressive?

Nice job. New LV worked on its maiden flight. Here's hoping the new HTV works well throughout the mission.

Reiterating that there are two launch videos posted in the NASASpaceFlight Video Collection forum (one of the JAXA coverage, and one of NASA TV's coverage), both are uploaded.

What's with the surgical masks in the control room? Only the front row has them.

Then they all probably have a cold, in Japan (and elsewhere) it's common for people who have colds to wear masks. They're not worn as a protective measure for people without colds.

Congratulations to all of our Japanese friends!  Here's to the rest of the mission fairing as well.

The next time someone complains about NASA PAO launch coverage, make them watch this launch.  Terrible direction of cameras at the moment of launch (hello, iris control), no simulation after it went through the cloud deck, etc.  Yes, good coverage does matter.  At least we got major event reports.
PSA #1: Suppress forum auto-embed of Youtube videos by deleting leading 'www.' (four characters) in YT URL; useful when linking text to YT, or just to avoid bloat.
PSA #2: EST does NOT mean "Eastern Time".  Use "Eastern" or "ET" instead, all year round, and avoid this common error.  Google "EST vs EDT".  *** See profile for two more tips. ***

Thanks for the coverage.  This is now one of three NSF thread windows (DM-1 Test, STS-128 and HTV launch) that I can close down; my strikes on the f5 key were beginning to sound like a woodpecker.

I wonder if they'll give the HTV a name now ... isn't it the custom of JAXA to rechristen their spacecraft after a successful launch? (Like Selene became Kaguya)

JAXA representative in the pre-launch news conference stated that it will not get a name

They had an onboard camera? Is that footage in any of the posted video? Love to see it.
