Thiokol archival material?
« on: 03/14/2019 01:42 am »
Hi All,

I'm doing some research on STS-51-L/the Challenger disaster, and am hoping someone might have the answer to this question.

Does anyone know where Thiokol corporate materials might live? In particular, I am looking for archival material, such as promotional films, corporate publications, etc. relating to their aerospace business.

Here's an example of one of the few films I've found: http://stock.periscopefilm.com/51934-thiokol-rocket-missile-propellant-solid-rocket-boosters-careful-diets-for-missiles-film/

There was also a publication called "Thiokol Magazine"- one issue of this is at a small museum near their Brigham City/Wasatch plant: https://collections.boxeldermuseum.org/index.php/Detail/objects/7821

Does anyone know if there's one place that holds a lot of old Thiokol material like this? I was planning to call Northrop Grumman (who acquired ATK/Thiokol) and see if I could get through to a human who might be aware of a Thiokol archive, but I'm dreading it... Don't expect to have great luck, there. :/

Many thanks in advance for any ideas!
Susan Johnson

Thanks so much, Mr. Scott! Yes, I was just looking at this list of materials– a few of the items in the collection look promising.

I'd still love to find a repository for their films, if one exists, and more of their promotional materials. Thank you!

I've had a little professional experience over the years working with corporate historical records. It can be messy, especially when companies are split off and some assets sold to one entity, some to another, mergers, etc.

However, I would say that if any consolidated set of documentation exists for Thiokol's rocketry and aerospace history, they are probably maintained by Northrup Grumman, since NG bought Orbital ATK last year. There are two names/numbers/email addresses for media relations folks in the Aerospace sector here:

The Library of Congress (LOC) has a set of Thiokol material, several years it seems. Examples are Thiokol magazine. (Thiokol Chemical Corporation) Bristol, Pa. 1962- and ATK Thiokol news  Vol. 1, no. 1 (Apr. 20, 2004)-v. 3, no. 2 (Feb. 24, 2006).
I would also try the National Archives.
