The M1 was found to tumble end-over-end in the transonic regime during wind tunnel tests.  The shape was modified with a boat tail and fins to create the M2.

The chapter on the SV-5D PRIME in Vol 1 of The Hypersonic Revolution has several drawings of alternative M2 designs.

Just browsed DTIC and five reports related to FDL-5A are right there. A bit dry, but with some good schematics. Enjoy !

Since the HL-10 and HL-20 were designated in the HL (Horizontal Landing) design number sequence, were there any design studies for lifting bodies by NASA Langley designated HL-1 to HL-9 and HL-11 to HL-19?

Nope, those numbers were "puns" - HL-20 was twice the size of HL-10, HL-42 was 4.2 times larger.

Do you have a technical source showing that the numerals 10, 20, and 42 in HL-10, HL-20, and HL-42 were mere puns?
