The article mentions that they are losing money with the current flights. Could an option be to delay current ticket holders to the new vehicles, but fly flights now at whatever they need to charge so that they are making a profit? That is mentioned in the article. They could probably charge $2M a seat and still get customers. The US has 81,340 people with at least $30M so that's quite a large pool to draw from.

"He said some seats might be sold to private astronauts who are willing to pay a “premium price” of up to $1 million each, versus the current price of $450,000."

Richard Branson‘s Virgin Galactic will lay off 185 employees, or about 18% of the company, as the space tourism firm attempts to conserve cash, ride out the skittish capital markets and focus resources on a new line of spacecraft.

The problem with that option is that it means bumping founders who paid nearly 20 years ago for their flight. VG have already done that a bit, but it’s clearly a tricky balance.

(They may have learned a lesson or two from VO, and are looking at all possible ways to extend the runway).

Pun intended???

Brambilla is an experienced investment and capital markets executive with an 18-year track record of experience across the Travel & Leisure, Wellness, Entertainment and Financial sectors—including 10 years at the Virgin Group.

Maybe a new space start-up could purchase the assets and make money off of it. Seams like most of the hard work has already been done.

Not at all. The current vehicle is apparently not good enough to actually generate revenue. (Plenty of guesses why, up thread)

They now need a couple of years of investment to get their Delta class ships ready.

As much as I want to see this business succeed, they have taken far too long, like Blue Origin long, to become operational.

I don't see how this can be a viable business with 1 flight per month after all the years of funding and development.

We very much need orbiter missions to Neptune and Uranus.  The cruise will be long, so we best get started.

Their IP is pretty much worthless, unfortunately... almost impressively worthless considering the time involved.

They’ve been messing around with the Rutan designs for soooooo long that the market has changed around it multiple times.

Lots of details in the article, including 725 customers awaiting flights, tickets now $600,000 each (although can’t buy now while Delta ships in development).

Glad to hear they are not selling while in development, but I think $600K is still too low. A good sales price might $999,999. :-)
