First Lunar Outpost "Comet" booster info...
« on: 09/05/2013 01:35 am »
Looking for any studies or anything else I can find that has information about the "Comet" heavy lift rocket proposed as part of the First Lunar Outpost (FLO) studies done for the Space Exploration Initiative back in the early 90's...

Thanks for any information or links you might have!

It all used to be available via. NASA Technical Reports Server until a few months ago, but it is gone now thanks to the export restriction scare (ITAR).  The rocket was described in document 19970016354 "First Lunar Outpost Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle", which itself was a 1992 report.  Maybe its out there somewhere.

It used to be right here:
Advanced Transportation System Studies Technical Area 2 (TA-2) Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle Development Contract : http://hdl.handle.net/2060/19970016354

The rocket also appears to be described in AIAA PAPER 92-1546.

It may never have been named "Comet." I believe that one person who wrote about it determined that the nickname may have been applied by a writer, not anybody who actually studied it.

Thank you very much to everyone who replied... The links are exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for...

I find the study of past HLV proposals fascinating...

Thanks again!  OL JR :)

By the way, some good high-res FLO images here:

Didn't find the rocket, however. They did a poor job with the rocket image. It's a clumsy Photoshop.
