What's with the surgical masks in the control room? Only the front row has them.

They don't want to give the rocket Swine Flu?

As much as I like Rob Navias ... I'd prefer he not talk over the JAXA feed.

Fair point about the weather--I didn't see the clouds.  But they could have gone to a cool STK simulation like ULA  ;D

Or maybe they could focus instead on making their brand new spacecraft on their brand new rocket work properly. Nice pictures can wait for future launches.

Swine flu precautions? Weird that everyone doesn't have a mask, regardless of why.

Geez, not even a trajectory graph/animation or any other imagery of interest.

This is a cultural thing in Japan. If you have a cold then you wear a mask to avoid spreading it to those around you.

I highly doubt that people in charge of TV visuals and simulations are the ones actually involved with the vehicle.

Thanks, that's actually an excellent idea when you think about it.

At anytime in Japan you can see a certain percentage of people on the streets, etc. wearing masks.  Not just Swing Flu precautions.

H1N1 prophylaxis makes no sense if only the front row  has them on.  Is the front row analagous to MCC-H "trench", and this is some wierd kind of team-building ritual?

Masks ARE somewhat effective at preventing the spread of flu if it's the person who has the flu wearing them. In Asia it's fairly common and considered courteous to wear a mask if you're sick with a cold, flu, etc. They're just not good at preventing the wearer from getting the flu.
