Press Release
N°15-2018

Paris, 2 July 2018

Call for Media: ESA invites for media interactive talks at Farnborough

ESA and its partners the UK Space Agency and UK space industry will host a series of media interactive talks on Tuesday 17 July during the Farnborough International Airshow. These will take place in the Space Zone, Hall 1, in the events area of a joint exhibition stand.

The media interactive talks are a new concept for ESA: different topics are explored in-depth, with selected media participating on stage in question and answer sessions.

Special guest panel members will include ESA Director General Jan Wörner, ESA Directors, the Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency Graham Turnock, and the President of UKspace Andy Green, together with spokespersons from industry.

Programme:

10.30-11.15       Space and its Economic Benefits.

Space technologies and applications are seen by governments as a valuable investment to support their national social, economic, strategic, and technological development. Innovation and efficacy of public-funded space research are called upon to sustain growth and competitiveness in Europe as well as to support employment and entrepreneurial capacities.

11.30-12.15        Space and aviation. Improving both safety and operational efficiency.

Space-enabled services are bringing improved operational efficiency and safety to the aviation sector. Experts from business, academia and European institutions will describe how this will save the industry billions of pounds, improve service to the flying public and reduce CO2 emissions by millions of tonnes every year.

12.30-13.15       Satellite and the 5G revolution: Big challenges, mega-opportunities.

With ESA's help, the space sector is joining the 5G revolution. Leaders of some of industry's most disruptive companies will describe the opportunities this creates and how it is attracting new private investment and technological innovation across the value chain.

14.30-15.15       Changing Space: Game Change – Game Over?

Q&A on current European private investment enabled by ESA in the fields of Space Exploration and Earth Observation and how Europe is playing this game change.

15.30-16.15       Space Economy: Down to Earth or Up to Space?

An announcement within the Grand Challenge initiative, derived from ESA’s Space 4.0 strategy to propose inspiring goals far from market reach. The first Grand Challenge, to be sponsored by Metalysis, will assist sustainable operations for long-term settlements on the Moon or Mars.

Please check the ESA website for a final list of speakers, to be published in the next few days.
