We will see and UAE cosmonaut on Soyuz MS-12?

UAE announces first Emirati astronaut's 10-day space mission date .

First Emirati astronaut to go into space in April 2019.
I did some checking and it is a done deal although Roscosmos is late announcing it officially to the Russian media. It will be a direct hand over like previous flights and will return on a previous vehicle.

I find this development slightly odd. The deal to select, train and fly UAE astronauts, between Roskosmos and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, was announced in early 2017. It was a more long term and in depth project, with astronaut selection for a team of four, running until end 2018, followed by a 3/4 year training programme, and big focus on research and an ongoing arrangement to fly UAE astronauts regularly, in the 2020's

https://mbrsc.ae/astronauts/

A flight in early 2019 looks a bit rushed, light on time for research, and rather pointless, in the context of their overall plan. They still have 95 astronaut candidates to screen in a couple of months, so that process itself will need to be rushed, and there seems little scope to plan and deliver any meaningful science or research in the time available. Essentially, this is just a 'space tourist' type mission.

This deal also scuppers (or hopefully just delays) the plans of an Austrian woman pilot, who seemed, in late 2017, to have pulled together the funding and necessary corporate and media support, to bid for the next available Soyuz seat.

39 UAE astronaut hopefuls pass initial tests

The first Emirati to be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) in April 2019 will be selected from these 39 candidates.

Thirty-nine of the 95 Emirati astronaut hopefuls have passed the physical and psychological tests to qualify for the preliminary list of the UAE Astronaut Programme, it was announced on Saturday. The first Emirati to be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) in April 2019 will be selected from these 39 candidates.

According to the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), the candidates went through extensive tests and interviews conducted by qualified specialists. The tests included a clinical test and a range of activities to measure intelligence, aptitude, neurocognitive ability, personality and working memory. Following these tests, one to one interviews were conducted with the initial selection committee, where the candidates' personalities were evaluated in various mental and psychological aspects to ensure that they are fit to endure the harsh and unusual conditions in space.

The next stage will be crucial for the selection of the first batch of Emirati astronaut corps, who will participate in scientific missions in space. The final interviews will begin on July 3, according to a top official.

The 39 shortlisted candidates will undergo the final assessment stage, which will be supervised by a team of experts from the MBRSC, in addition to experts from international space agencies. The final evaluation phase includes interviews conducted by the committee to have a comprehensive evaluation for each candidate as per global standards.

The German project Die Astronautin, whilst well-intentioned, and highly publicised, is unfunded at present, so I did not regard their two candidates as serious contenders for this Soyuz opportunity. In any event, one of them is pregnant, so clearly they didn't see this as a realistic chance, either!

The woman I am aware of was a candidate for Die Astronautin, and she reached the final 30, despite being Austrian! She subsequently became involved in a privately funded 'alternative' project, which enjoyed support from a couple of major corporate sponsors. However, I've heard no updates on the project status since late 2017.

This must be the most rapid astronaut selection process ever. Although they are clearly working to a deadline, as a result of the Soyuz MS-09 flight becoming available at short notice, I'm not sure it's a good thing to be rushing a process that usually takes many months, in this way.

Even the official website of the UAE Space Agency can't keep pace!

Exactly! That very basic website hasn't even been updated to reflect events of the last 2/3 weeks. It still says the selection will take until end of 2018, whereas it's clearly necessary to complete it within the next month or so, if they will fly next April.

Nine qualify for UAE Astronaut Programme final assessment

DUBAI, 11th July, 2018 (WAM) -- The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, MBRSC, has announced that nine candidates have qualified for the final evaluation phase of the UAE Astronaut Programme.

The programme aims to train and prepare a team of Emiratis to be sent to space for various scientific missions. This supports the intensive preparations to send the first Emirati and Arab astronaut to the International Space Station, ISS, in April 2019.

The nine candidates, who have passed the one-to-one interviews in the MBRSC out of the 18 candidates, will undergo an intensive assessment in Russia by experts from Roscosmos. After that, the UAE will be choosing the first Emirati astronaut corps of four Emirati astronauts based on the comprehensive evaluation for each candidate.

The tests will be conducted by experts from Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre and will include intensive medical and physical tests for each candidate to ensure they are ready for special space-related training. This may extend up to 14 days for each candidate.

Speaking on the announcement, Yousuf Al Shaibani, Director-General of the MBRSC, said, "The last phase of the evaluation process for the nine candidates will be a major step for us to choose the best candidates who will represent the UAE in space and carry out space exploration missions and scientific research to benefit humanity. This supports the objectives of the UAE Astronauts Programme, as well as the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, to build national capabilities in space science and take this sector to strategic levels."

Recently, the UAE, represented by the MBRSC, and Russia, represented by the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, signed an agreement to send the first Emirati astronaut to participate in scientific research in a Russian space mission to the ISS, aboard a Soyuz-MS spacecraft.

Two astronauts from the Emirati corps will be trained in Russia, one primary and one backup. One of them will be joining a crew of Russian commander and an American astronaut in Soyuz MS-12 spaceflight which is planned to launch to ISS in April 2019. The others will receive extensive training for future long duration space missions.

The Programme was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, as part of the UAE National Space Programme.

UAE Astronaut Programme candidates arrive in Moscow

DUBAI, 5th August, 2018 (WAM) -- The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, MBRSC, announced that the nine qualified candidates of the UAE Astronaut Programme have arrived in Moscow, Russia, for their mission specific medical examination.

The Programme was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, as part of the UAE National Space Programme. It aims to train and prepare a team of four Emiratis to be sent to space for various scientific missions.

The medical examinations will last for three weeks and will take place at the Russian State Organisation ‘Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Centre’ and Institute of Biomedical Problems, IBMP, the State Scientific Centre of the Russian Federation. These examinations will help UAE name the first Emirati Astronauts Corps, who will receive training to perform different space missions in the next few years. Two of the four Emirati astronauts will be selected; an astronaut and his back-up will start training in August 2018 for a flight to the International Space Station in April 2019.

These intensive examinations include conducting an ultrasound of the thyroid gland, kidneys, and small pelvis, respiratory function, fiber colonscopy, ECG and 24 hour monitoring of the blood pressure, tonal audiometry, CT of the paranasal sinuses of the nose, entering the pressure chamber, examination by a centrifuge machine and the vestibular apparatus among others. The examinations are extensive and are specific to space missions, to test the astronauts’ level of endurance and prepare them for space surroundings.

Yousuf Al Shaibani, Director General of the MBRSC, said, "We believe that these examinations will not only support the selection process but will also earn the candidates a deep understanding about space mission preparations and conditions. We look forward to receiving detailed evaluation of each candidate to support the selection process of the first Emirati Astronauts Corps."

The UAE Astronaut Programme is funded by the ICT fund of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). Launched in 2007, this fund, which is the first of its kind in the Arab world, aims towards supporting research and development within the ICT sector in the UAE, helping it to grow into a nationally significant industry with a leading place in the world.

Comments have been made about the short time between selection and flight for the "guest cosmonaut" on this mission.

The first Afghan cosmonaut, Abdulahad "Abdulah" Momand, was selected on February 2, 1988 and he was launched on August 29 the same year aboard Soyuz-TM 6 on a visit to the Mir Complex.   I think that this is currently the shortest interval between selection and flight.   Of course it was politicially-driven because of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, although the Soviets were withdrawing their forces.

MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti). Two candidates from the UAE to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) will begin training at the Cosmonaut Training Center in the Star City near Moscow by mid-September, rather than in August, as previously planned, told RIA Novosti source in the rocket and space industry.

"The last stage of the selection of candidates for the flight, which consists in training at the simulators in the Cosmonaut Training Center, has been extended for a week, and the selection will be completed at the end of August, after which the candidates will leave for the UAE, where the final selection of the two candidates, the main and backup ones, will be held presentation at the national level, "the source said.
