Mockup of another JPL Earth-orbiting spacecraft scheduled for launch in 2014. JPL currently is not building any planetary spacecraft, something that has apparently not happened in the last 50 years.

Last one that I'll post. We got to have dinner with the center director a couple of days after the landing. He showed some slides. This was his last one.

Wow. Is that purely down to JWST, or are there other factors too?

It's rather complicated, and I cannot get into all of it. Partly it was due to MSL cost overruns eating into other parts of the planetary budget. I'd also say that there's probably no single reason that everybody would agree on, so I could try to answer that, but it would be my opinion of why things happened, rather than fact.

Mostly Griffin

Was that just him scrounging every penny for Constellation, or did he have issues with unmanned planetary too?
