1/6 - Space Tourists

Space, goes the general consensus, is the final frontier. But the chances are, if you have a couple of hundred thousand pounds to spare, that you could very soon boldly go where quite a few others have gone before. They were, of course, astronauts, so it was their job, but space tourism for enthusiastic amateurs is already big business. Entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has long harboured a dream to put ordinary men and women into space. He's set up Virgin Galactic for that very purpose. Here, Horizon looks at what might lie ahead for anyone with enough spare cash to go into space, and talks to one man who's already had a go. It was, he says, a religious experience, where he felt as if he'd touched the face of God.

PS the quote is Mike Melvile :)

Challenger again. She's getting blamed for space tourism too now. :(

Rutan in Parrot eating shocker! (only those watching will get that!)

Pretty decent programme.

I liked Scaled advanced computational areodynamics, lobbing modles of SS1 off the roof! :)

And it ends with Richard Branson letting it slip that he's building 5 SS2s

Enjoyable. Seems to be the same people that did the Challenger programme.

Once again, SS1's shuttlecock descent method was presented as a solution to orbital re-entry.

Horizon used to have decent science in it :(

Good to see high-quality footage of the SS1 flights though - I'd only previously seen them on the net. Rutan said that he wished he'd built SS1 in 1975 - it would have been easy he said, and by now we'd all be able to take the trip...

When was this, I've always assumed it's stayed about the same but my understanding has inceased, However, I wish they had spent more time on why SS1 was safer, why air launch is good, why the engine was safer, why did it roll so bad, why M&Ms and were they peanut or chocholate? ...
