Speaking of which. The Chinese are wanting to have a space station of their own. What are they doing different to the ISS to make their version become viable without the huge costs of the ISS at present?

By building their space station from service modules left over from manned flight, from what we know. The Shenzhou 8 and 9 missions will involve the docking of the two spacecraft to create a space lab that will be crewed by shnezhou 10. Wether they'll build on this lab or launch sepearate dedicated station modules is unknown at the moment.
