Launch viewing tickets go on sale Wednesday,
I miss the old ordering system. In the past I've tried to get tickets and was successful every time. How I miss dinner with an astronaut ticket packages. At least they haven't instituted a lottery system yet. I dislike those even more than a waiting room.
Didn't try the website but I was able to get causeway tickets through my congressman. This will be my first trip down to see a launch and was wondering how best to plan for liftoff delays?

More people are in the waiting room than can get tickets, and they're selected randomly...
Can anyone who wound up with Congressional tickets to STS-129 in November or STS-125 in May tell me: were they Causeway tickets, or did you wind up at Banana Creek? It looks as though at least a few Congressional ticket holders at STS-119, STS-127 and STS-128 eventually made it to Banana Creek -- but they had so many scrubs, I figure they're aberrations in terms of standard procedure. I'm curious as to what a more crowded launch experience -- one with fewer postponements -- was like.Historically there seems to be lots of chatter in the "Viewing (Going to launch, etc.)" threads from people with Congressional tickets in the lead up to the day of a launch, but no real follow ups from people on site or afterwards to say where they finally ended up. (I've managed to acquire a pair of Congressional tickets, but I don't know if I'll have any idea which location I'll be going to prior to seeing which way the bus turns out of the parking lot that night.)Thanks!
I will only receive one placard, so if I wanted to sell these 2 extra tickets to somebody how would they get inside? Can I request an additional placard? Can they arrive before they are required, or is there another transportation method available?
KSCVC tries to make it sound like there's no getting anywhere near it on launch day without the right paperwork, but it's not like they've got a toll booth. It would surprise me greatly if you couldn't just drive up to the box office on the afternoon of the 6th and ask for a parking placard to be used later that evening.

Not toll booths, more like security booths with guards who are on occasion carrying assault rifles to supplement their sidearm.

You have obviously never been to KSC on launch day, or when launch preps are in work. Security is tight from the time the crew arrives until her and her crew are in space. They've got multiple sources of police enforcement (SWAT, KSC/CCAFS Police, etc) that are standing guard at all entrances on launch day. If you don't have the paperwork, you won't be getting into the KSCVC on launch day.
has anyone been able to view a launch from the area of haulover canal? if you google map Allenhurst, FLA, a ghost town now part of National Seashore is located at the haulover canal along with a linked video shot from it appears this area for sts-119. I know the park personnel close the max brewer causeway on east side, but how about the approach from the north down highway 3 to haulover. When I called Canaveral Seashore, woman said all of highway 3 is closed. But she had to check with someone and I don't really have confidence in her answer, especially based on this video . it's a well done video by the way.

DINNER on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6 at 8p.m.
Quote from: ChrisGebhardt on 01/19/2010 07:24 pmDINNER on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6 at 8p.m.The 6th is a Saturday. I'm guessing the get together is Saturday night and not Friday night, correct?
Brand new here so bear with me if this is wrong place to ask, but I did not see where to start a new post. I have question on times for the Feb 7th launch. My car placard says arrive at KSC no later then 1130 pm. then my tickets say use them no earlier then 230 am. This 3 hour window. Do we sit in our car in the parking lot or what? Thank you to anyone who can tell me about it.
JEFF2SPACE, not going to causeway. they were already gone;. But i did not think that 230 would mean 230 pm , because I assume everything with NASA would be military time and that would be 1430. I am going to go back through some of the other missions as someone suggested and look for the answer and will post back if I find anything. I CANT WAIT!!!And to the person in sweden,I got mine today by fed ex, so your may be on way, but I never got a tracking number nor was told. That may be for out of country.
This has probably been discussed before, but where is the closest un-obstructed FREE view of the Space Shuttle launch? I'm going down there for the launch as well.Orbiter

For all first time Shuttle launch visitors take a look at these threads, read them, there is a lot of info in there that can help for this visit:STS-126:http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=14349.0STS-125:http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=11982.0STS-127:http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=16756.0STS-128:http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=18240.0STS-129:http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=19000.0

Thank you so much, Swee. That was very helpful. I am just going to visitor center so no bus to board. I was going to come the back way as I will be in cocoa, but thought it went straight to the road that I have to turn on and then enter the gates with everyone else. Are you saying there is a gate back there that I could take, as long as I am there by the time stated? That would be wonderful.NW
STS126, that stamp thing sounds wonderful. Is that just for congressional ticket holders, or is it for people who have the visitor center tickets too?
the 2 times I have gone "congressional" I was at the Banana Creek VIP site . You will have access to the Apollo/Saturn V museum, everyting is open food, restrooms even the shows/displays within the complex were up and running. this was for 126/127 . Also you can send keepsake envelops with mission profile/ facts for $1 a piece that will get a KSC cancellation on the stamp via usps. They will sell you stamps if you don't bring any, just remember to have addresses of those you want to send 'em to. For congressional tickets, expect a mailing that will have some info. Normally they meet at the Sears at Merritt Island Mall south of ksc about 3 hours or so prior to launch. Bus you nonstop to Apollo. for one of the scrub attempts they had us meet at visitor center, but that attempt was scrubbed also well ahead of time. Guess it sort of depends number of invites and timing. Will be interesting to see for this early morning launch which I plan on attending somewhere.
I look forward to being there for 130. I plan to stay until Feb. 10 so I can see the SDO launch on the 9th. Any advice on what is the best place to watch that from?
How early do they usually start busing people out to the Saturn V center for launch viewing? Thanks
Whoops sorry, I meant for the shuttle launch.
Have any congressional viewers for STS130 received their email from NASA HQ? According to my last email, they were supposed to give arrival information a week or so ahead of time.
Also, the weather looks frightful about now--rdale or another wx guy, can you provide a real look at the forecast for us?Thanks!
I received my email confirmation a couple hours ago.Question: my itinerary says "Causeway"--is this literal and we're not at Saturn V, but instead at LCC?
Thanks tminus9 and Jim (and thanks Jim for your level-headed, (dare I say optimistic) take on today's budget/NASA plan). So glad I'll have a chance to (hopefully) see STS launch one last time in person though I wish we were closer to actually feel it!

Is it possible to view the SRB's being brought back into Cape Caneveral? Also how many days after launch do they usually come back in? Thanks
Can anyone answer my earlier question about things being open Saturday night/Sunday morning at KSC VC? Will we be able to see things or is everything closed? Will drinks be available or should I bring my own? Thanks to anyone who knows...
For those of you who have never been to the VC, you may want to bring your own food and drink... it's pretty expensive (as you can imagine any tourist attraction is). Just wanted to throw that in, as it was like 3 dollars for a soda back before STS-129...! Just some friendly advice
I purchased a pair of Causeway and Dine with an Astronaut tickets, but then picked up some congressional passes. PM me if you're interested in purchasing the tickets. I'd plan to turn them over in person Saturday night at the NSF dinner.
OK I have one more question for anybody. I emailed KSC and she sent a nice email back that things will be going on that night, including the tour bus that will go to Apollo/Saturn V Center. Now I looked on the map and that place is VERY close to the launch pad. So if we got on this tour bus, are we actually going to go and be able to see Endeavour very close? We only have Visitor center tickets, but when I saw how close that stop of the tour is in relation to the launch pad. I was in disbelief. So would we really be close??? It will be so worth getting there early if I know that I have a chance to at least get close for a few minutes. Anyone tell me if this is the case? The KSC klady said the tour bus would make 2 trips that evening.

If you are arriving a couple days before you could always head over to Playalinda Beach.
Quote from: Walter S on 02/04/2010 02:40 amIf you are arriving a couple days before you could always head over to Playalinda Beach. Playalinda closed at 6:00 PM today and will not reopen until the day after launch.
I am so glad someone brought up PLayalinda. I was going to ask that but thought I had already asked too much. For the future, if I ever get to Florida this summer,It looks like 5 days in advance that beach closes, but is it really close and could you get a good look at the shuttle after it has been rolled out? I always planned to be there a day before and then a couple days in case it delays, but if you planned it like 5 days in advance, would that beach be a fabulous place to see it up close, as long as I knew it was not cloesed yet? Isn't that just like a mile away? I may have this plan if it gets delayed this time and I have to come back for July.
Anybody have one extra ticket, or a good idea where I might find one?
Through good graces we have been able to get 3 vip tickets for the banana creek viewing area. The letter we have says get there at 1:15 so we can get on the bus at 3:00 am promptly. One question is - will there be traffic trying to get there at 1:15 am? If I understand correctly, we drive to KSC visitors complex, park and then get on the VIP bus at 3am?Also - is it hopeless trying to take pictures with my 12x zoom digital camera? I know they won't be great, but if i had just one picture i took myself where you can see the shuttle itself I'd be happy - then go back to watching with the naked eye....keeping fingers very crossed - only have one chance to see launch on Sunday am!thanks
for the vip tickets does letter have you meeting at the visitor center?
Two questions:1) Anyone on the east coast of the US going out to see Endeavour come up the east coast during powered flight? I was ready to go this morning, but I don't think I can do the earlier wake up on Monday and still have a productive week at work. The moon was in the southeast, and it would have been a really cool sight.2) At the end of the first orbit, will the shuttle be passing over the eastern US? About 90 minutes after launch, it will be twilight here and the shuttle would be visible. There is an ISS overflight here in the NYC area at 5:32EST. Any chance we'll see the shuttle at the end of the first orbit? I haven't been able to find a web site that plots the first orbit.bob
Last night we arrived early (9:30) for our Causeway Viewing for the Dine with an Astronaut. Timing wise everything worked out great. Anyone now how the line to park and go through screening was later, or how it might be later tonight? We are thinking of a arriving later but with enough time to park, make it though screening, and make the last couple rounds of buses. My five year old is going to be a wreck, and want to minimize the damage.Thanks.
Orlando TV station said if liftoff does not occur tomorrow they would not make another attempt until the weekend. I have not heard that officially though. Any info on whether that is the case? If so tomorrow is my last chance since I am heading home no later than Wednesday. Maybe shuttle must stand down to accommodate SDO on Wednesday.

View from Merritt Island on the SR-528 Causeway. Was able to follow it to within about 30 seconds of MECO, when someone with a car wanted by me. Nice roar and an appreciative crowd. Four more to go. Now a nap and off to work.

The moon was in the southeast, and it would have been a really cool sight.A friend and I, plus several other people from around town, went down to Fort Fisher (near Wilmington, NC) to the secluded southern tip of the island to watch. We saw it from about 1 minute, 30 seconds MET to MECO. It looked amazing with the SRBs taking it up. A beautiful bright red color with a long, prominent flame trail, making a very apparent arc over the ocean. It was much like seeing it from the Cape, but in miniature. What blew me away more than seeing it at the Cape, though, was that you got a real idea of how amazingly fast the thing goes. In the time it takes me to take my garbage can from the side of the house to the street, the Shuttle went from being stationary in Florida to being over 400 miles away, off the coast of NC, due East of me. Another 3 minutes brought it 30 degrees east of North according to my position. In just 7 minutes or so, the thing had gone from horizon to horizon at about a 150-degree angle. Incredible.
I didn't see too many videos of liftoff yesterday since it hardly compared with being there. But I just watched the NASA TV video and see there was some frost on the tank. That is unusual.I thought Allard Beutel's pre launch commentary was quite good. However in those final seconds he seemed a little hesitant. Almost sounded like he was asking "zero?" at T-0. ;-) That is one reason why watching out at the Banana River site I was almost afraid we were going to see a last second abort. Thankfully that has not happened for many years though, and with luck they will get through these remaining 4 missions without that occurring again. But having eyewitnessed the engine shutdowns on 41D, 51F, and 68, I think of those events with every launch and practically hold my breath until I see the solids ignite. I was also there for last second scrubs on STS 56 and 93, but saw them lift off a couple of days later. So my past experiences always have me aware that things can go wrong right up to the end. 130 went perfectly though and I am thrilled I was there to see it.
For those of you on the causeway I have a question that I have never found a detailed answer on: When the launch was scrubbed did you purchase another $56 ticket for the next attempt, and if so where did you do this and was it a pretty straightforward process? Thanks, and I hope to have tickets for March and hope to meet some fellow NSF'ers!
looks like this is from south southeast comments on you tube say 1 mile away. which with audio delay seems close about 15seconds for sound so I thought maybe 2 miles. anyone know what the whining sound is in background before shuttle noise come up?

I also saw some photos from approx the same location and that person was able to view touchdown (you could see the puffs of smoke from the Main Gear). If you do go out on Monday and Endeavour is still on-orbit, keep an eye on the wind direction, which may drive which end of the runway the orbiter would land on. The 20 Mule Team Road site is great for approaches to Runway 22, but for the other end (Runway 04), you'd likely want to be on the south side of the base.

That's interesting though, I didn't realize you could see touchdown from there.
Unless you know someone that works on base forget about getting on base. It is almost impossible to get on base for a shuttle landing (press etc.. excluded) I have a couple of friends that are part of the VIP group at Edwards and the closest they got was at the North part of the base, about 5 miles away. You'd have better chances at 20 Mule Team Rd. If in fact they target for 22.

I guess it hadn't occurred to me that things might be different for this landing - any more info? I'm not familiar with the VIP group you mention. For 128 I didn't know exactly where to go and I ended up blowing my best opportunity, because the roads around south base were shut down an hour or more prior to landing. I drove past the road and burned a little too much time talking with some airmen I had asked for directions, and when I came back it was closed down. I ended up about 3.5 miles north of the strip on a hilltop with a handful of other folks, and while it was a great view I was hoping to be a little more prepared this time! So, you guys and gals with VIP passes, how long did it take you to hear back whether or not you were in? I put in my request through my Congressman, and havent heard anything yet. Going in July.....
Thanks for sending this. Requests are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis, and I will inform you as to whether or not the passes can be granted about a month prior to the scheduled launch. If they are granted, an invitation is mailed directly to the home mailing address that is good for everyone in the party.Due to the overwhelming amount of requests NASA has received for the remaining space shuttle launches, we have recently implemented new guidelines regarding requests. There is now a limit of five (5) people per party. We can make the exception for the infant, but we normally try and stick to this policy. Also, we don't require social security numbers or dates of birth, but knowing the ages of the guests is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Good Afternoon, This is in response to your request(s) on behalf of your constituent(s)to view the STS-130 Space Shuttle launch, which is currently scheduledfor 4:39 AM EST on Sunday, February 7, 2010 from Kennedy Space Center,FL (the launch has recently been rescheduled from February 4th).NASA is pleased to inform you that we are able to accommodate yourrequest(s). Invitations will be mailed to the mailing address(es) youprovided in each request. Please pass along this information to yourconstituents. They will need to follow the instructions in theinvitation to RSVP directly to NASA.
