I just have to say, that ~6 second squat on the pad is horrifying if one is not expecting it.

Another success for @Ariane5 and all teams involved! Thanks for your trust, @MEASAT! It’s been an honor to launch our fourth satellite together! The first one was MEASAT 1 in 1996… #ICYMI, it also was the 137th satellite built by @AirbusSpace that we launched! #VA257..

Amazing video. Of impenetrable clouds of smoke and steam obscuring the launch pad. For nearly a minute. While a huge impressive rocket climbs on a pillar of fire into what is apparently a beautiful evening, but who knows? Followed by some awesome animation and a wide shot of the talking heads saying some of the dumbest stuff you’ve ever heard, in their cool studio, with actual beautiful video of the flight filling about 1 percent of the screen.

No wonder they have comments turned off.

Every Ariane launch I’ve watched, is a surreal experience. And not in a good way.

First Ariane 5 launch of 2022 is a success, supporting two loyal clients of Arianespace: MEASAT (Malaysia) and NSIL (India)

- The Ariane 5, operated by Arianespace, has successfully placed two telecommunications satellites into geostationary orbit: MEASAT-3d for the Malaysian operator MEASAT, and GSAT-24 built by the Indian Space Agency ISRO on behalf of NSIL.

– Carrying out its first mission of the year, and the 113th overall, Ariane 5 once again demonstrates its exceptional reliability.

– Mission VA257 will improve broadband coverage in the Asia-Pacific region and represents another commercial success for Ariane 5 in the Asia-Pacific market.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 06:50 pm local time, an Ariane 5 launcher lifted off from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana (South America), successfully orbiting two geostationary telecommunication satellites, MEASAT-3d and GSAT-24.

“With this Ariane 5 mission, Arianespace is honored to support the ambitions of two key actors in the Asia-Pacific region: MEASAT, the leading Malaysian satellite operator and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a Government of India company within the Department of Space (DOS) acting in concert with the Indian Space Agency ISRO. With the orbiting of both MEASAT-3d, the fourth satellite that we’ve launched for the benefit of Malaysia, and GSAT-24, the 25th Indian satellite we’ve delivered for them, we are affirming our long term partnership with these two great actors,” declared Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace.

MEASAT-3d, to be co-located with MEASAT-3a and MEASAT-3b in the 91.5°E orbital slot, is a multi-mission telecommunications satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space. It will significantly enhance broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps per user in areas with limited or no terrestrial network throughout Malaysia, while continuing to provide redundancy and additional capacity for video distribution in HD, 4K, and ultimately 8K in the Asia-Pacific region.

MEASAT-3d will also carry an extremely innovative payload on behalf of the Korean operator KTSAT.  Conceived by Airbus Defense and Space, it will be used by the Korean Augmentation System (KASS), a project of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport led by KARI, the Korean Space Agency, to significantly improve air traffic control in South Korea.

GSAT-24 is a Ku-band 4-ton class communications satellite built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) that will provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services across India. It will be the first “Demand Driven” communications satellite mission undertaken by NSIL.

“After the successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, this new achievement helps Ariane 5 write a new chapter in space history”, said André-Hubert Roussel, CEO of ArianeGroup. “Ariane 5 demonstrates its reliability once again, justifying the trust of Arianespace’s customers worldwide. Its successes are tied to Ariane 6, which benefits from the same reliability along with increased competitiveness and versatility.”

The Ariane 5 heavy-lift launcher is an ESA program carried out in cooperation between public institutions and industry across 12 European partner states.

ArianeGroup is the lead contractor for the development and production of Ariane 5, and is responsible for campaign operations and preparation of the launch vehicle up to lift-off. ArianGroup hands over a “ready to fly” rocket to its subsidiary Arianespace, which sells the Ariane 5 and operates it from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana. During launch campaigns, Arianespace works closely with CNES, who is the design authority for the Ariane 5 and controls the satellite preparation facilities at the CSG.

After this launch, four Ariane 5 vehicles remain before the Ariane 6 takes up the baton, supporting Europe’s institutional missions, while meeting the growing needs of the commercial market.

Successful launch of MEASAT-3d satellite set to expand
high-speed broadband coverage and data-intensive services

MEASAT’s cutting-edge satellite will connect another 2 million Malaysians
in remote areas and broaden offerings to clients

Kourou, French Guiana, 22 June 2022 – MEASAT Global Berhad (“MEASAT”) –
Malaysia’s premier satellite operator, has successfully launched the MEASAT-3d satellite
today, 22 June 2022 at 6.03pm (French Guiana Time) from the European Spaceport in
Kourou, French Guiana, equivalent to 5.03am on 23 June 2022 in Malaysia. The launch
was witnessed by a group of senior Malaysian government officials, private sector senior
executives and MEASAT business partners.

“Congratulations to MEASAT on the successful launch of MEASAT-3d. With the addition of
this cutting-edge satellite, Malaysians will be able to enjoy better connectivity, especially in
remote areas. This improved coverage will help the nation achieve our goal of closing the
digital connectivity gap between Malaysians in rural and urban areas, as laid out in the
Jalinan Digital Negara (“JENDELA”) plan. With stable high-speed internet access available
across the country, all Malaysians will be able to access socioeconomic benefits powered
by the internet, including participating in e-Commerce and internet-based learning, leaving
no-one behind in the digital age,” commented YBhg. Dato' Sri Mohammad Mentek,
Secretary General, Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia.

“The team at MEASAT are delighted at today’s successful launch and I would like to thank
everyone for their hard work. On behalf of MEASAT, I would also like to thank the Ministry
of Communications and Multimedia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission for their continuous support. This successful launch would not have been
possible without the collaboration of the personnel at the Ministry and agency. We are
committed to driving Malaysia’s national communications vision forward. With MEASAT-3d,
we will be better positioned to support the Government’s target to achieve 100% internet
access by 2025, by filling the broadband gap in locations without 4G, 5G or fibre coverage,”
said Yau Chyong Lim, Chief Operating Officer, MEASAT.

“MEASAT-3d will also play an important role in supporting our sister companies. The new
satellite will strengthen efforts by Maxis to leverage mobile, fibre, WiFi and satellite
communications capabilities to offer a better network experience, even for customers in
highly remote locations. In addition, with the restoration of unrivalled in-orbit redundancy
via MEASAT-3d, Astro will be able to strengthen its expansion capacity, enabling the next
wave of 4K and eventually 8K content to every home in Malaysia,” he added.

Over the next few days, the MEASAT-3d satellite will be raised from a geo-transfer orbit
into a geostationary orbit at MEASAT’s key 91.5°E video neighbourhood. The satellite will
then undergo testing for approximately one (1) month, prior to being brought into
commercial operations. MEASAT-3d will be co-located with MEASAT-3a and MEASAT-3b
at the 91.5°E orbital slot to form one of the region’s most powerful and robust orbital
locations.

In conjunction with the launch in Kourou, MEASAT held a live broadcast viewing session at
the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur on 23 June 2022. The event was graced by YAB
Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Prime Minister of Malaysia and YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri
Panglima TPr Annuar Haji Musa, Minister of Communications and Multimedia, and was
also attended by other government officials, MEASAT’s business partners and industry
stakeholders.

During this event, the CanSat competition organised in collaboration with Apadilangit in
conjunction with the launch of MEASAT-3d was showcased, where the Top 3 finalists –
Team Petrichor from MITstem International School, Selangor, Team Pengembara Angkasa
from SMK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2, Kuala Lumpur and Team Smeksi-Learn from SMK Seri
Iskandar, Perak, presented their entries, followed by the announcement of the winners and
the prize presentation. The competition for Form 4 and 5 students aimed to inspire the
younger generation to explore the potential of advanced satellites and contribute to the
technological and social development of Malaysia.
